Vintage speaker restoration - My Yamaha NS-1000

- My Yamaha NS1000 speaker rebuild description. It's been a pretty in-depth build that I agreed with myself I wouldn't hold anything back. Regardless of cost, regardless of the time needed I've done or had done anything that I wanted to do with these and I'm absolutely over the moon.
I enjoy making old things new again, I respect old things so don't often completely change them, however, these are a keeper for me so they could be exactly how I wanted them to be. From the stands to the cables through to the paint finish, nothing has been done in half-measures.
I hope you enjoy this relatively "off-brand" video. I think it's quite relevant. Practising what we preach, so to speak.
Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Killer job on the woofer grille. Also appreciate my first time getting user impressions of Troels' crossover.
Thank you.
I thought I had seen everything with Kenrick's reworkings of the NS-1000m. I was wrong. This an absolutely incredible job. The speaker as a whole is amazing but the work put into the drivers and grills brings the 1000 into current era. WOW!
The outboard X-over is it's own show.
* I have the stock 1000m but if I had the skill or money this is the upgrade I'd be seeking.
Great to watch someone with a genuine passion for old skool product you can see/hear the love in your voice
Those are gorgeous… that color is brilliant. You’ve done an amazing restoration job.
Thank you, David! I love them to bits.
@@Studioincar I would have to agree with David, they look brilliant, the colour I love ( has given me the idea for my if I can get it in Australia ) I have a pair of ns1000m in transit from Japan, arriving early December 2023. I plan to upgrade the the crossover from "Troels Gravesen " which by-passes the attenuators. Lol! I have only just noticed your post but happy I did.
Wow! Thank you :) Purchased this week a totaly original NS1000 from first owner .. and I'm overwelmed from it's transparency and givin' a sense of "right". Amp: Mark Levinson 383. Cables: TRM Ramses/Kimber KS. This is one of THE best products in my hifi-career for 30 ys. From '77 and playing absolutely fine.
They look absolutely amazing, money well spent! I have 3 sets of the NS-1000M's.
Ah, a fellow addict… Best of luck with them all, they’re marvellous speakers.
I didn’t realise how much you had to/have put into these. Just incredible, I thought they were a ‘simple’ restoration to put them back to new
Wow impressive restoration and finish on these NS-1000m speakers, congratulations! I love your choice of colour for both the cabinets and the drivers. I would love to do something like this if I can find the right pair. Meanwhile I'll keep enjoying my pair of NS1000 Ebony 😊
Glad to see your passion towards restoring them back like " out of box"
Just got a pair. Mint original condition. I’m coming to terms with them sound wise as they are nothing like I’m used to. Your video just convinced me they are worth more investment
To be honest, I think they sound incredible standard. I've had a few pairs before these ones so I could get to know them before modifying. They do sound better now as they've opened up even further, but they should sound great from stock. They're a particular sound, more like a horn or High sensitivity driver than a 3-way box design typically sounds.
Beautifully done and this inspires me to do the same on one of the two pairs I have. Enjoy the NS 1000, been doing so since early 80s.
Absolutely gorgeous, still using my Yamaha NS 500's. Can't imagine what the upgrade cost. But, I still enjoy them the way they are.
Keeping the dream alive, one old Yamaha speaker at a time.
one word - sublime, what a craftsman
Thank you!
absolutely stunning in the flesh too!! Awesome work bud...
Lovely job all round 👍. I also have NS-1000Ms and have heavily rebuilt mine. Perhaps even more than yo7 have as I also deleted the adjustment pots, added to the cabinet bracing and a few other bits.
Han quedado espectaculares!!
Very nice colour. British racing green is a beauty also
Look awesome Carl, certainly something I need in my workshop at some point!
Looks great. Really nice work!
Fabulous effort with these! Well done.
Thank you.
THEY DESERVE WHAT U DID TO THEM ! ! !
RESPECT FROM MACEDONIA ! ! !
All I can say is woooow I’m speechless
Thank you. They've been hard work but they have come out wonderfully.
I just picked up a pair of Yamaha NS1000 the none M series I believe they were the home edition for 400 dollars in mint condition a scuff here and there but nothing mayor I want them candy apple red hopefully I can find someone to take the job.
Crossovers is great!
Color is amazing
Cracking restoration job - love the green colour, but if you paid around £1,200 for a beaten up pair; what would my 1983 originals be worth - they're practically mint?
I have NS-1000M speakers and managed to bag them for .....£50. The guy selling was telling me he'd just some mordaunt short speakers and how much more he liked them. I was very happy to take them off his hands.
@@Studioincar The condition you have managed to get these into is just incredible. Really stunning work. How much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking, to get the paintwork done. I really need to get something done like this for mine. How do you like them? Are these your main speakers?
hey budy im planning on getting a Ns-1000m . can you drop me a link to look into any literature about out-board cross over that you made :) . much love fammm its a drop dead gorgeous build
Beautiful, I have two pairs now, I would love to find somebody who could refinish my cabinets. I have a pair of re-worked crossovers just waiting to be auditioned.
Amazing work of love with these! Absolutely Beautiful!!! I’m impressed with the sound just coming from my I Phone! I own a pair of 1000’s Ebony that are in really good condition. I would keep the cabs as is, but would look into the crossovers that you have. Did you do any upgrades to the speaker drivers?
Love to chat sometime. Cheers!
Hi Stephen, no mods to the drivers at all. Just aesthetic stuff and big ass crossovers.
Amazing... Wow.
Thank you
Congratulations Carl, they look and I am sure sound superb. I read the build on the forum it’s nice to see a video of them.
What was the total cost for doing all this?
Also will you be putting a Perspex cover on the crossovers so that you can still see into them?
Thanks
Looks ace! What album / song is playing?
This is just amazing!! The speakers look wonderful. It looks like you have a lot of experience with building crossovers, so I wanted to ask (if I may): I have a pair of these NS1000's, and my right speaker's tweeter is exhibiting distortion in the 3k-6k range, when playing pure test tones. They have all the original parts, so I'm wondering if you would have any thoughts on whether this is a tweeter failure or crossover failure? I'll be taking these apart soon to troubleshoot so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
ps: the record you played?!?
hello, not only looks good but also sounds wonderful. Maybe you can tell me where you got the nice protective grille for the woofer chassis. I would like to buy them too. MfG Harry
Great video. Always like seeing someone enjoying the NS-1000s. I am an original owner and bring them out occasionally to show other audio enthusiasts. Can you share with me the design of the stands? The ones I have cant the speakers back at an angle and are probably not the best for phase alignment of the drivers. Thanks
Adore the style with the green. I have a pair of japanese NS-1000M (without the holes for the covers) on the way to me and i would like to give them a classic touch up aswell.
Can you tell me how you got the screws back to copper?
Best regards from Germany
please, tell me where you got the bass grills😢😢😢
I made them brother. They were one of the more difficult parts of the project.
Nice bro
Beautiful set-up! I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on the TG crossovers for my NS1000 speakers. Did you have to play with any of the resistors or tweak anything in any way to get the "right" sound out of them?
Nice work. How do you remove from the cabinet the plastic sockets for the grill pegs?
@@Studioincar Ok, just found your thread over there. I see that you used a small pick-hook to get them out. I actually had tried something similar but I was using a lot of force and was afraid of breaking the sockets, so I quit before I got them out. I'll try again. Thanks.
Hi, do you still do this any contact of you?
where you got grills for bass?
Its very cool NS1000m. But 700X for my ears is better
Good for you Mak, that’s what makes the world go around.
