I bought one for a kid to use on a Raspberry Pi / RetroPie. Most of its PS4 related shortcomings don't apply there. Except for those damn slippy thimbsticks! So I added those aftermarket rubber clip on things, and they made a huge difference! The thumbsticks feel great. They're nice and grippy, and have a surprisingly smooth action. It's actually very satisfying to use, now. Totally transformed the litlle thing into something quite pleasant and very usable for the purpose. And the form factor is ideal for those retro systems we're emulating on EmulationStation. It may not be the best PS4 conroller, but it's great for what I'm using it for.
I love this controller. Got it on sale and never regret it. I wish it had the mic input tho. I use this controller to play battlefield and paladins/ overwatch.
Some adults need them suprisingly. I have very tiny hands and I'm almost 19 years old. My hands dont fit the original dullshock ps4 controllers. Sadly, this wont work for me :(
I bought it for my 7 year old, he loves it with all the kid games he plays. My friends kid says the same. Here lies the issue. Maybe if, ya know, the reviewer asked an actual child how it was to play games a child would play, the review would make more sense. As of now, it’s just a grown man yelling about something he’s way too old to comprehend.
I watched this review and came to the same conclusion immediately. Has no clue what exactly kids hands can or cannot do and is just on a tangent for why he doesn’t like it for his hands and playstyle.
I've noticed recently that you've pretty much only done "negative" reviews where you rage a lot on the videos. You used to have more positive videos. What happened to those? Not everything has to be negative! I miss those.
You just decided to hate it from the start. It works fantasticly, and at 30 euro's it's so much cheaper than a official dual shock 4, that it is a very smart buy for kids who tent to wear down controllers a little faster. It's basically exactly what it promises to be, at a good price, so it's an excellent product. Maybe not for you, but that doesn't make it bad.
What’s kind of funny is that if Shane had looked at the side of the box, he would’ve seen the following: “Doesn’t include the following advanced features that a DUALSHOCK® 4 wireless controller offers - Light bar, stereo headset jack, speaker, and motion sensor.” Don’t believe me? 8:01
One more thing, every other review I saw knew EXACTLY how the touch pad, and touch pad button worked. Learn to do your research before making a video? This controller fits you perfectly with those voice cracks my man hahaha
Bro this is like One of the nicer controllers for playing retro & fighting games in particular which is honestly the only reason I bought it for playing marvel versus Capcom and such, if you’re trying to play Gran Turismo with this remote that’s probably not going to be the greatest experience. If you were to use the remote for something more similar to what I’m imagining it was designed for like your retro gaming addiction then you’re going to be satisfied. The dude making this video isn’t looking at the controller from all angles, he’s looking at it simply with a simple mind.
It makes an okay Raspberry Pi controller at least!!! ...Until you find out the pivot at the bottom d-pad reacts when you hit left and right and causes the EmulationStation menus to have an aneurysm every time you want to move down unless you use military precision tapping.
I don't know, most cross-platform titles aren't tightly bound to any Playstation specific features such as touch and motion, nor even to analogue triggers. The usual grips however are a major issue, they cause RSI when trying to reach thumb sticks if your hands are too small - the consoles that did this right are GameCube and Dreamcast, with less meaty wings or placement closer to edge. I think this has a use. The thumbstick isn't rubberised out of fear that the rubber would fall off or decay like on so many controllers or because the necessary double-shot TPU-ABS is a special process that is among the most expensive and difficult to get right when it comes to custom parts. The middle buttons are rubber because they're part of the switch like in TV remote controls, so it's a cost cutting measure for controls that are used infrequently and don't have to be the most responsive.
It's not even that bad of a controller? I've been using it for half a year now and feels pretty comfy in my hands. I have long ass fingers and I can still get a comfortable grip. I mostly use it for PS2 emulation and PS4 JRPG's. In this video this guy is overexaggerating everything, he's just a weak sperg. It's just a fucking controller.
Thanks for making this video. I had been considering this when I had to replace my controller. So I'm going to just spend the extra money for a normal controller.
>Talks about how he doesn't know who it was designed for and is a horrible product >Says right on the box that it's designed *FOR KIDS* Ah, good old quality rarez.
If I had gotten this at 8 I would have had it returned. The point of a controller is to play games and it can't do that because it's missing key features needed to play PS4 games! Age literally has nothing to do with it. Kids are not inferior gamers and I feel bad for you if you actually think otherwise.
An 8 year-old isn't going to care about analog controls to shave half a second off their pb in (insert racing game here) or hairtrigger response times in (insert fps here). They're going to be having fun playing (insert kiddy game here) because they're 8 using a controller their parents can actually afford. Not everyone can spend $80 every time they want a new controller cause the kid broke it or spilled pop on it. $40 is a great price for a controller for a child, especially with the rugged build quality that was actually praised in this video. Oh what, infamous doesn't work? Oh no the horror. My kid can't play a buggy launch title that based itself entirely on gimmicks.... and is M rated. Go play some kid games with the controller *CLEARLY* marketed towards a kid with idk.... a kid and then come back and give me a review.
not really an excuse, if there are better controllers on the market for the same price. Sure they wont work on a ps4 but that shouldn't matter when it comes to quality
Yeah sure let me just buy my kid a $5 NES controller so he can play PS4 games. Cause that's totally how it works. This isn't being judged as a controller. It's being judged as a *PS4* controller. The two main gripes are the lack of analog triggers (a predominately PS4 feature) as well as a convoluted trackpad (a PS4 exclusive feature). Take the need for those two things out and what do you have? a 30 second video. So yes, it being a controller for use on the PS4 does matter.
It looks like a fighting game controller, from what i've seen online Hori's primary gaming market is the FGC, press L1 for Fatal Blow/Rage Art (Check) down, forward, down forward AKA Kazuya's Heavens Door (Check) to me these seem possible as D-pad is all you will need for fighting games (Which is why i'm considering one of these)
Was actually thinking about Second Son the second I saw the “touchpad” on this thing. That and games such as Bloodborne that uses both sides of the touchpad as buttons.
My only real issues with this controller was the thumbsticks, which I opened up the controller and replaced them immediately, and that if you're playing on PS3, the PS button inexplicably doesn't work. I understand the flaws of this controller, but I personally like it because I only use for 2D Games or PS1 Classics. EDIT: Also, the L2 and R2 triggers ARE analog. It's just more difficult to notice. This doesn't make it good, but it's just a correction. I've tested the inputs of the controller on PC, and windows shows me that L2 and R2 are still analog.
tim5fl HaHa you are correct, sadly I think its too much fame but if he keeps this up looks like Im going to have find a new guy to test games and stuff so I know who to trust when I spend my money...
I love that you always review unusual controllers. I enjoy the oddities companies come out with for consoles. And not to hate on Hori, because they are a generally good peripheral manufacturer, but they messed up with the Onyx as well. Was excited to see a controller that looks like an Xbox controller, since Xbox controllers are so comfortable to grip. But then they made it too small to grip comfortably while working both the joysticks and the triggers, plus the trigger buttons are absolutely terrible. Oh Hori... Keep up the good work, everyone at Rerez! Been subscribed for maybe 4 years now, and the quality has only improved.
I like the way you became more productive since having a dedicated studio. Love your vids and now they are delivered with a grate pace! Thanks for your work!
Keep in mind this is a cheap $25 controller and it’s good for its price. I’ve played countless games on it like Secret of Mana, Destiny, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Resident Evil, and hell, I even beat the first two Kingdom Hearts games on it and I have no complaints with it. I’m a guy with big hands, the 3DS XL can’t do my hands justice, but even I think this controller is comfortable, it’s very reminiscent of a SNES controller, but just a little bit different. I’ve also used it with a bunch of emulators, it’s great for SNES games, GBA, DS, GameCube, Wii, PS1, PSP, and even some Dreamcast games, it works the best with SNES, GBA, and PSP. It’s a good SNES style controller for $25, of course it’s lacking some features and they’re going to cut some corners, but overall this controller is great for the price.
This is a good controller , your not even playing games meant for children. I bought this for my son and he loves it. I totally understand that the L2&R2 aren’t analog or the motion action are gone , it’s because to save space &money . If your gonna play Teen & Mature games which requires those features, you darn screwed up because this is meant for kids, even the box shows kids playing with this. Daddy has the DS4 and his son has the Hori Mini. You missed the mark by a million years with this video and no brownie points for you. not your fault that you didn’t understand what it was meant to be used by, next time play kid games with kid products, you might as well play street fighter v with a racing wheel controller, get what I mean? This is a good controller and you missed the point. You’ll get it next time
There was a simpler way for Hori. I once saw a controller, a green Xbox one controller. It's cheap, it's wired, it's only on natersils, but it works. It was even slightly smaller, but still had a grip on the bottom.
I found it just as easy if not easier to use the stick joysticks in it. You could just add the grips to it yourself. But the PS1 idea i never realized you COULD do.
Well, we bought this mini controller for my little brother so we could play some fun Co-op games together and he loves this little thing! He hates racing games anyway, so he's totally fine with everything this offers! His tiny hands fit it very neatly as well. If you don't like the controller, it's fine of course (but most people here and adults anyways or at least above the age of 13, you aren't gonna like this controller much.)
I have this hori is a good controler d-pad works correctly, in analogic uses a ruber proper for this, is not totally for kids its wrong, works it all PS4 games yeah but dont have (the feature of move like PS3 or PS4) and have a bonus works in PS3 and so PC too, the Controler of PS4 costs 69,99€ and hori costs 34,99€
I'm pretty sure they didn't design it for being used in single player games, it always shows the kid being player 2. Why would you buy a second controller just to play games that don't require a second controller o3o
Dragzilla 66 I'm saying the original controller comes with the console, there's no reason to buy a second controller for single player games when you have a controller. The ps4 isnt known for it's massive library of must play local multiplayer exclusive games. So it makes since to some to buy a $20 second controller over a $60 one when they knowwhat it's hardly ever going to get used. XD I honostly forget that I have a second ps4 controller cause it never gets used.
Trimint Pikachu I also just realize that the games that have him the most problems where M rated games, while he kept emphasises it was designed for kids XD
I watched the video and it seems that the control sucks, but in my experience is a very good backup control or a control for an extra player in meetings, i really recommend it, it works really really fine
I've been eyeing this controller for a while, so seeing this review has been helpful. I can deal with some missing features on a budget controller, but the sound of the d-pad and the touchpad function as described sounds less than desirable. It sounds like it'll do for just getting something out for any given multiplayer game i suppose.
You don't have child hands, therefore you cannot fairly comment on this controller. Maybe you could review child sized clothes and complain that they don't fit you
I feel like it'd make more sense to review more kid-oriented games with this controller than fully mature AAA games, since that is the demographic for this controller.
Why the hate? The non rubbery thumbsticks are much more durable than rubberized ones, which wear out and sometimes get sticky. And if children are involved, most of the time they will chew them. If you really want the rubber, you should apply rubberized thumbsticks covers. I always use those to protect the thumbsticks or to have more grip if the thumbsticks are made of solid plastic.
I was partnered with Neowiz for awhile to play DJMAX and this controller is perfect for that. This controller isn't designed for games like InFAMOUS. It works great for platformers, puzzlers, and arcade style games. Also, why in god's name are you using the analog sticks on Downwell??!?! DPAD MAN.

I use this controller to play battlefield and paladins/ overwatch.
does it feel ok playing competitive games like paladins with this
Ew
How, i respect you but how?
I think I've watched every one of your videos and each one is top quality. Definitely need more subs for the work you put out
If you like watching a grown ass man act like a petulant child then I guess.
I like how a grown man is reviewing a children's product by testing it himself, very informative.
You: buy this for your kids and they wont want to play game anymore
Parents: perfect🤓👍
Get off my games I want to play.
when you are right you are right
why did i misread the title as horny mini ps4 controller!?
8:03 that looks like you
Dude. I really like it a LOT more when you review stuff you actually enjoy.
I've noticed recently that you've pretty much only done "negative" reviews where you rage a lot on the videos. You used to have more positive videos. What happened to those? Not everything has to be negative! I miss those.
Clint Kubow glad to know I wasn't the only one! Noticing that.
Hes the angriest gamer you ever heard
kagen lim he is not deserving of such a premium title.
It made me think about a DualShock 5 with a proper touch pad, like the Steam controller
So did you like the dualsense?
@Kuanlim Jappendi i don't really know i don't have a ps5 i was just asking him if he likes the design
What’s kind of funny is that if Shane had looked at the side of the box, he would’ve seen the following:
“Doesn’t include the following advanced features that a DUALSHOCK® 4 wireless controller offers - Light bar, stereo headset jack, speaker, and motion sensor.”
Don’t believe me? 8:01
God this controller is *HORI* ble
Heat Trigger Did you just make a pun?
B.C. Rivers a *HORI* ble pun
-please kill me-
Heat Trigger Boi...
LOLZ!
This controller is phenomenal for retro games and fighting games
Smedis2 I mostly use this controller when playing EPSXE and Zsnesx on my laptop
I cant even get this to work on pc
Good LORD that's an awful controller
NearlySeniorCitizen Yetagamer eh its the size of a Sega Genesis controller with the looks to prove it.
NearlySeniorCitizen Yetagamer yea I know! This controller is HORIble!
It's just a fucking controller.
its even smaller than the sega saturn controller and the snes controller
NearlySeniorCitizen Yetagamer You must be high off opioids.
Shane, I love it when you get so pissed that your voice gets higher lol. Another great video!
Maybe the pads on the joysticks were removed because they were afraid small children would chew on them?
Cameron Wilkson i agree i used to do that as a kid because i wanted to see what was under it
Dip the tips of the thumbsticks into flex seal liquid. I'm not kidding it works and adds grip.
Wait, so what the shit is that rectangular button for?!
Touchpad
Thanks for making this video. I had been considering this when I had to replace my controller. So I'm going to just spend the extra money for a normal controller.
From what alternate universe, where HORI makes cheap crap, did this drop from?
1st honest review I've seen so far, good job as always.
>Talks about how he doesn't know who it was designed for and is a horrible product
>Says right on the box that it's designed *FOR KIDS*
Ah, good old quality rarez.
>Le Meme Arrows outside of 4chanit
not really an excuse, if there are better controllers on the market for the same price.
It’s for children. I sure hope you’re not letting your child play Bloodborne lol.
@@kirkbrandt2349 before in 20 years the gamers of the PS1 dont have a "control of Young gamers" to pasé the Crash Bandicoot
"I'm at a loss for words, here" is the funniest thing he's ever said.
This sounds like it works like the way the PS4 controller works to emulate the PS Vita touch screen and reverse touch pad.
It's a great controller for children. It's the only one my 6 year old son uses.
tim5fl HaHa you are correct, sadly I think its too much fame but if he keeps this up looks like Im going to have find a new guy to test games and stuff so I know who to trust when I spend my money...
I wouldn’t give my kid a wired controller
Just let ur son use the regular ps4 controller
@@YBPaladin kids dont just turn suicidal out of no where
@@YBPaladin I use wired controller when I was a kid... 🤔 (NES era. I'm ancient)
Your review is totally unfair and illogical : This is a device for kids, so you must tested on games for children / young gamers .
aquilesriffo no kid would want this piece of shit
OUTSID3R
whoa look out everyone, we have the voice of every child on the planet here!
That one dude who posts stuff kids would get very angry if they can't play GTA 5 or whatever shit because of those buttons.
Tell me one button that requires the touch pad in GTA V, cuz as far as I'm aware, the whole game can be played without it.
That one dude who posts stuff I'm talking about the circle pads and triggers you bloody weeb.
I like the way you became more productive since having a dedicated studio. Love your vids and now they are delivered with a grate pace! Thanks for your work!
Can you review the Hori Pokken Fight pad?
Yes that would be nice... But plz! Dont talk about it the way you did this video cus this one was REALLY REALLY BAD 👎.
You’ll get it next time
FiVEL PEREZ its a shitty controller, I feel bad for your kid for having cheap ass father like you
FiVEL PEREZ This man bought a cheap controller for his kid because he’s scared that his “bicc boi” controller will get damaged
lol daddy gotta cut corners 😂😂😂👌
Poverty controller OMEGALUL *you're
You hit it spot on. Sorry assholes in the comments are calling you cheap. This was made for kids, it should be used on kids games.
There was a simpler way for Hori.
I once saw a controller, a green Xbox one controller. It's cheap, it's wired, it's only on natersils, but it works. It was even slightly smaller, but still had a grip on the bottom.
So I guess it will survive if I gave it the finger? lol.
The comfort 😫
Looks like a joy-con to me
I've been using one for over a year now and I have no issues.
I used it for my Skylanders playthrough.
Also only bought it because it was cheap
I replaced the joysticks on mine with PS1 joysticks
Maruko Chan 99 I like the old joy sticks better
Connor RK1000 the Hori pad mini joysticks were painful to use
Maruko Chan 99 yeah I know
**asmr**
Noice.
Ricardo Rodrigues oh yes its fantastic
I have a solution for the thumb sticks.
Just dip em’ in flex seal.
Actually that would work lmao
"...and maybe they'll grow up to be really weird people who don't play video games"
- Something that was said by an actual human being
Whenever I see this, I always do a double take, thinking that this is a Dragon Quest themed controller.
I'm pretty sure they didn't design it for being used in single player games, it always shows the kid being player 2. Why would you buy a second controller just to play games that don't require a second controller o3o
Even then, the Dualshock 4 is way too big for children's hand.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, you can play Knack with this? I'm sold.
It's almost as if HORI bought the rights to some crappy knock-off controller, then slapped their name on it...
Dude you sound like a cartoon voice! Like Donatello from the 80s and that's a compliment!
Saw this at a store and thought it was for a different system, then saw PlayStation on it.
I watched the video and it seems that the control sucks, but in my experience is a very good backup control or a control for an extra player in meetings, i really recommend it, it works really really fine
HOYL Heck big boy got joicon
Wut
I've been eyeing this controller for a while, so seeing this review has been helpful.
I can deal with some missing features on a budget controller, but the sound of the d-pad and the touchpad function as described sounds less than desirable.
It sounds like it'll do for just getting something out for any given multiplayer game i suppose.
Another Wii Classic controller clone
This is the controller I used to use with Wheato's PS4. It's a good controller.
You don't have child hands, therefore you cannot fairly comment on this controller. Maybe you could review child sized clothes and complain that they don't fit you
So true XD
I'm 12, and my friend gave me this. It SUCKS. My hand felt like it was on fire after bout an hour of Rocket League
_Chillax, Shane. It's made for kids lol. And it was _*_meant only for kids._*
*L* L -L-
Dude needs to chill with the rage. It's nowhere near as bad as this guy makes it
he does this all the time I stopped watching this and his other channel because of it.
I bought this for my nephew, because I don't see this video before buying it, and he refused to ever use it after using it one time. Now I know why!
Game hardware makers must be like," we better get this right or Rerez will serve us our craniums ."
This controller is a little beast for fighting games.
This is the rebirth of Quickshot Joypad created out of accident
I have this controller and it works just fine.
So did they just forget about pressure-sensitive buttons for the triggers? Wasn't that one of the primary features of the DualShock 2?
I was partnered with Neowiz for awhile to play DJMAX and this controller is perfect for that. This controller isn't designed for games like InFAMOUS. It works great for platformers, puzzlers, and arcade style games. Also, why in god's name are you using the analog sticks on Downwell??!?! DPAD MAN.
And if this controller had 360 games built-in..
You can sense Super Saiyan Rerez..
Building up.
