Power Your Sound Bag: DEITY SPD-1 Power Distribution Box
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 сер 2024
- In this week’s episode we take a look at DEITY’s SPD-1 battery distribution system. The SPD-1 allows you power all of the gear in your sound bag by connecting up to 3 separate batteries or power sources at a time, and hot-swap them when necessary. In this video we overview the SPD-1’s feature set, demonstrate how you might use it with your sound kit, and discuss how battery distribution systems can make your job on set or on location easier. Let’s take a closer look!

Fantastic review. Nothing left unchecked.
Enjoyable to watch !
👍
It is good to be updated on the new tech and electronics!
👍
@Zack Darce Thanks for coming by, Zack. I hope you're getting plenty of time in on your drum kit!
Was hoping you would review this product. Looking to get one soon. Thanks
👍
I would have maybe thought twice before buying my BDSV4 from Remote Audio after seeing this model given the features and the price point. The cons for me with the Deity would be that i needed more DC locking barrel plugs for my wireless rather than 4 pin Hirose, and the higher cost of 4 pin cables that may need to be adapted for my wireless receivers(using Sennheiser G4’s with dummy batteries wired with dc barrel plugs)
👍
Coming from the field of electronics I know that unfiltered non isolated power outputs can affect devices that are powered in parallel.
I wonder if you experience any noise issues, although I doubt it because it is more common when you power more simple analogue devices.
Also the non current regulation of its outputs can be a good thing because in cheaper devices the electronics are prone to failure that could cause damage to the devices they power. If the regulator is not there in the first place one less thing to go wrong.
I haven’t experienced any noise yet.
Nice. Thx
Thanks Phil.
Hi Curtis, great review as always! Have you tried powering the Mixpre through the usb-a port, using an adapter to usb-c?
No.
@@curtisjudd Meanwhile I’ve tried it and it actually works!
@@TheElFuppo does it fully power the MixPre or only in the orange low power mode? Which adapter?
@@curtisjudd Full power green mode. I actually just used a simple usb-a to usb-c cable, which came with one of my power banks.
@@TheElFuppo I see, so that cable doesn't adhere to the USB-A spec. That's good in this case.
Nice review Curtis. I don't think I've seen a definitive answer from Deity or reviewers on this question. Will the SPD-1 supply sufficient power via the Hirose connection to an 888/SL2 combo in order to power the recorder, both slots and the two DC outputs of the SL2?
I don’t believe so.
Thanks for the detailed review. One thing i don't get is that the power draw from an 888 plus sl2 is afaik in some cases a bit too much for what hirose plugs are rated for, hence the ta4 in the sd 8 generation. Why use a device that has that high power rating on the input side but not on the output?
Other than that, great product i'm really considering for my 633bag
Yes, that's my understanding.
Hi Curtis. I was especially interested in this due to the USB-C input option, specifically being able to run a bag/cart off house power/simple laptop voltage USB wallplug. Have you tested the USB-C input? I tried using it with a laptop charger (as Deity suggests) on a shoot the other day, but the SPD-1 was showing it would only receive 9V from USB, instead of the desired 12V.
Sweet - do you like it as much as the Triple Play?
It doesn't do some of the RF filtering that the PSC does but I haven't run into issues with the DEITY in terms of RF or EMF interference. And I very much prefer the telemetry data of the SPD-1.
Wicked @@curtisjudd - just configuring the bag and your timing is perfect. I'll grab one too! Thanks.
Thanks Curtis! So to be clear, you can power an 888 with this, but NOT a MixPre-3? Even from the dedicated USB-C?
Hi Zach, with the existing cables, that’s correct. But there are two potential solutions: 1) use one of the after market battery sleds for the MixPre with a 4-pin hirose input or 2) DEITY makes a new 4-pin hirose to USB-C cable which supplies enough voltage and current for the MixPre-3 or 6 recorders
Also, the USB-C port on the SPD-1 is a power input, not an output.
@@curtisjudd Ah, I didn't know about the hirose attachment for MixPre. That's the move. Thanks again!
Hi Curtis - what wireless receivers are you showing in your bag in this video?
Those are Sound Devices A20 receivers.
If you have an 888 with an SL-2 (as you did in this video) then there's not much point to using the Deity is there? You can just run your smart battery into the 888 (using the 888 to monitor telemetry) and use the SL-2's outputs to power everything else. I guess the manual toggle switches might be a benefit in some circumstances tho?
Also, multiple batteries for hot swapping. That’s a big benefit on its own.
@@curtisjudd The 888 has no fewer than 3 hot-swappable batteries on its own, though (the smart battery and 2 NP-Fs)
@@patrickchase5614 yes, but I prefer not to have to dig into the bag or pull out the mixer to change batteries.
@@curtisjudd no need to dig into the bag! You can charge NP-F batteries without needing to remove them, I haven't removed mine from my 833 in months and *months*.
@@davidcmpeterson truce! I’m not here to say you have to buy this or do it my way. For my workflow, I prefer to use two smart batteries. I make no judgements about everyone else powering how they choose.
Looking good Curtis! You changed your color grading?
I’ve seen there are rear adaptors to add Hirose to MixPre-3 from Sound Devices as well as others, would that do the trick?
Yes, that should do the trick. 👍
Did I understand correctly that this will not power sounds devices mix pre 6? Or were you referring only to the USBC output?
Thank you
The USB-C cable does t supply enough for the MixPre 3 or 6 and neither of these recorders have hirose inputs
what is the samsung usb thats pluged into the mixpre3?
That’s a RAVPower USB battery bank.
Does anyone know if Deity ever addressed the mixpre 3 issue?
What is the MixPre issue?
Not clear to me how you powered the 888 via the SPD, or was the 888 connected to the SPD?
Hirose to TA4f cable
Exactly, yes, connected the SPD to the 888 with a hirose to TA4F cable.
@@curtisjudd Kinda defeats the purpose of the TA4 doesn’t it 😆. That whole TA4 thing bugs me seeing as how everything SD made for decades is Hirose. I know why they did it, just a little irritating.
@@AllenCavedo hirose couldn't supply enough power for the 888
@@davidcmpeterson According to the comments above, the Hirose connector does supply enough power for the 888.
