In this segment of our video book, we cover distances inside our Solar System.
We start out with a brief history beginning with how Nicolas Copernicus used planetary retrograde motion to help move us from the Earth-centric view to the Sun-centric view of our Solar System. We work our way through the contributions made by: Tycho Brahe and his detailed observations made with mural quadrants and sextants; Kepler and his mathematics of elliptical orbits; and Galileo with his observations using the newly invented telescope. We conclude this history with Newton and his theory of gravity. Gravity gives us the first opportunity to explain the inverse square law that will play such a central role in celestial distant measurements as we move out to the stars.
We then explain planetary parallax as an extension to triangulation and use it to determine the distance to the Moon. We also illustrate all the additional information that becomes available once the distance is known, such as diameter, area and volume. Next, we take a look at the orbit of Mars and the Earth and the distance of Mars from the Sun, followed by distances of all the planets and dwarf planets from the Sun. During this segment we cover the major moons around each planet. We then focus on the Asteroid Belt. We explain Lagrange Points and cover Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids orbiting two of these points. This takes us to Earth’s Trojan asteroid, 2010 TK7.
We then turn our attention to the Sun. We triangulate the Sun with Venus to calculate our distance from the Sun - one Astronomical Unit. With distance to the Sun known, we calculate its diameter, surface area and volume; the length of Earth’s orbit; the Earth’s velocity around the Sun; and with that, the Sun’s mass. Next, we use Jupiter’s moon Io to calculate the speed of light and with that we calculate how long it takes the Sun’s light to reach the Earth.
We end by adding the parallax rung to our distance ladder.

And the planet!
Mr. Butler, I believe I speak for the majority of your viewers/subscribers when I say we applaud you sir, for the time and effort you put into your contents. I am currently a student of Astronomy and I wouldn't have had this clear understanding of what my professors talk about if it weren't for your educational videos.

I hear the reports of your death are greatly exaggerated
I enjoy listening to this before bed. Calms the mind.
I agree 99.99%, my mind is not only calmed, it is also excited, at the same time. . . ergo my .01% difference. :-)

Mr. Butler, I want to express my deep gratitude for the time you put into making these precious videos. I think I’ve watched all of them dozens of times. I suffer from PTSD and insomnia, and I find comfort in listening to your calm voice. I like your slow and thoughtful presentation, and it calms me down and helps me sleep. Sometimes I put on your videos when I wake up with nightmares at 3 AM. I find the subject matter interesting but you present it in a way that takes my mind off of my troubles without being overstimulating. You have helped me in more ways than I could ever express. Thank you, and I wish you all the best.
Thanks Steven. I'm glad it helps.
i totally agree, these videos are so calming and interesting :D
Near where I live in Germany there is a solar system walk. There is a sculpture that depicts the sun, it’s about the size of a skippy ball. About 200 meters there is a post with a bronze earth, it’s the size of a marble, the moon about a hands withs with away. There are bronze sculptures of all planets like this. Its a 10 kilometer walk to Pluto. On this scale the closest star is approximately in South Afrika.
Huh. I may have visited that place this summer. Do you live near Plon?

Bravo, sir. These videos are so well produced and written. This is a service to people everywhere. Keep up the good work!
Some people are so rude asking David dumb questions. Please refrain from such childish nonsense. David has put together what is possibly the most amazing, most accurate and incredibly mind absorbing series of videos on the solar system, the stars, black holes and way beyond into the known universe. Please show him some respect, the man is a genius!
Thank you David, your videos are amazing. I’ve learned more for you about the universe than anywhere else. Please don’t stop!
There's something soothing about David's voice. 🤩
I use it to take a nap" 😴
Probably the best and clrearst explanation I have seen on this topic.
Thank you sir.
I would of have love to have a professor, teacher role model throughout my academic journey. Im not very good at math, physics, chemistry or just overal scientificperson. I'm just a women facinated with the universe and everything in it.
Your simplicity down to earth explanation is just makes it easy for me to undestand to the point that it just makes me want to learn more and more🤗
15:29 - 16:00 was the most savage verbal attack anyone has ever thrown at me...
How am I just now discovering this dude?! I am now a satisfied subscriber of yours Mr. Butler. Keep up the amazing work and thanks a million.
Love watching these at bed time. Just so awesome and relaxing

Sir, you have taught the world that science is a beautiful reality.
Thank you.

David your videos are wonderful! Thank you! A tremendous gift!
i love using these vids to drop off to sleep to
I fall asleep to these videos. I love them. I learn something new every time I watch them but I missed it somehow in the past 30 years of astronomy. They're smart clever informative interesting laid back soothing and just all-around beautiful. Thank you for making these videos David Butler you made a masterpiece
Interesting, in a good way I use for sleep as well.
@@gregadkins7691 I understand hundred but I can't understand million. Astrological numbers make my brain go numb even more.
The brain-numbing effects of Butlers voice and these numbers make me fall asleep.
This is drugs.
the local group galaxy's video is my best sleeping video
A wonderful series of lectures that makes it an enjoyable learning session.
This is the first video of yours I've seen where you appear in person. I saw the starry background, heard your soothing voice, and had to smash the like button and write this comment before I could continue.
I fall asleep to these videos. That's a compliment, I promise.
Michael Pipkin I know what you mean. They are both stimulating and relaxing at the same time. They are also awe inspiring.
It happens to me and in fact quite often too. Lol
Its only me or this is better and more complete than National Geographic or Discovery?
Nothing but praise for this fantastic work Mr. Butler. I always enjoy your channel!
You have the best way of describing. Simple and direct. Your a very good educator.
Finally. An astronomer/channel that The People, can understand. Much better than sitting in a classroom lecture.
I'm sure a lot of people after viewing this series of videos would have exhulted "so that's how we know the distances from different celestial objects".
Thank you Sir! A great set of resources to equip the next generation of straight thinking youths.
I've noticed that you occasionally reply to comments even on older videos every now and then. That's really cool. Thanks for making all of these videos.
This is one of my favourite videos on the internet… ever!
The work that astronomers such as Rømer were capable of doing at their time with the tools they had is truly astonishing. The thought of even thinking of using the orbit of Io to calculate the speed of light is incredible in itself but then to get as close as he did is amazing.
Agree 100%
Great choice of music once again David.
This video is a wealth of knowledge for space fans. 5/5
I really enjoy listening to your voice and the way you explain everything in such a clear way. Thank you!
im new to the channel but i have already devoloped an admiration for the profassor. in a far away place by the himalayan mountains where i grew up people call someone dear affectionatly by the prefix brother, uncle or granpa depending on the age difference. In that manner i would like to say thanks.. thanks uncle david
So glad this exists.
Mr. Butler , Thank You Sir for doing this. Your presentation is exceptional , your knowledge , overwhelming yet your calm demeanor makes it very easy for me to take all of this in. As a hobby , I have looked to the night sky in awe with an inquiry mind . I've read several books about our Solar system but none of them compare to the knowledge I've absorbed thus far in your sereies of videos. I have "subscribed" and I'd like to thank you once again , keep up the great work Sir.
I wish your videos were seen more, as I believe they are magnificent.
Hey good news! Osiris rex just began it's journey to Earth couple of days ago! It exceeded our expectations and captured 60 grams of sample from Bennu. Hopefully everything goes well and we receive the sample in 2023!!
Your respect for people and for human intelligence is all inspiring and thank you so much for this information
I'm so in love with your video's Mr. Butler. Already saw all of it but can't get enough. Your voice is soothing and with the classical music on the background plus getting educated is a delicatesse for the curious mind. Yesterday I let my girlfriend see your video about How Fast Is It. She really liked it but fell asleep. She liked the content but she said it's very relaxing.
I learn more about the our solar system in 31 minutes did 12 years of high school thank you so very much
RAUF BEDAR no wonder u didnt learn anything...who spends 12 years in " high school "
Very well written and produced sir. You are simply the best
Vangelis sounds beatiful along with your lecture
I've met a few astronomers in my 50 odd-years. My brother, who is an astrophysicist, has met many more than I have. He even worked with Sir Patrick Moore many years ago. We both agree, based on our experiences: astronomers, for some important reason, are the nicest, most joyful and interesting people we have ever met. These videos simply strengthen that pejorative view, at least for me.
I really enjoy thinking about the brilliant people that made all of this possible.
I will watch as soon as I get home very excited. Thanks
Thanks for breaking down the mathematics when determining indirect measurement
It's amazing; I love the owner of the universe.✍️
So happy i found this channel :)
I love watching this series
Excellent video. The whole series was "out of this world"
choice of music is outstanding, as always.
I could watch your videos all day! (Secret, I have!)
I love your videos, sir! They are very well-paced and immensely educational.
Keep it simple stupid
@@JamesBond-ku2zc What do you mean? Was this in reply to my comment?
This is a reaply to the best of videos
Well done, 3 videos in and I'm hooked! Thank you! I am very interested in our universe and our origins but getting pretty sick of all the conspiracy theory videos. This is refreshing!
the way you said 'Enceladus' is awe inspiring
Pedantic comment: When you know all angles and one side of a triangle, it is not "simple geometry" that is used to find the other sides, it's trigonometry!
David, thank you very much for your very interesting and amazing videos.
The images are quite impressive. The narrator has a very clear and soothing voice. When I watch this video I can become a bit drowsy. The images are quite impressive and the explanations as to how things are measured are interesting.
Excellent production, and information.
I am learning so much! I love you!!!
Bob Ross of the astronomy
I love this comparison.
I love your videos. Please keep making them.
Just can't describe the feeling in words, so good
David, thanks a lot for this videos!, so awesome to really go a little bit deeper in knowledge about the cosmos
Amazing videos David thank you so much. I’m working my way through them all. I’m a wonderer and these answer so many questions I had on all space related things. I’m just surprised more people didn’t find this series in UA-cam.
Thankyou sir. Such a joy to watch.
Can't believe you mentioned my Brahe, Tycho! Thanks for the shout-out to my Brahe, Brahe.
Thanks again David for your hard work!
This was great, subscribed. Thank you!
Very informative. Man, there are some smart people out there.
Excellent and fantastic explanation sir.
Excellent delivery and detail. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Awesome effort in the research and production of this series.
These videos are great to fall asleep too. Thank you 🙏🏽
...asleep *to. Only use "too" when using it in the sense of adding. eg: "I am going to the shop too" , or "I like that movie too". Hope this helps.
Yes they are....and Mr. Butler makes the subject matter easier to understand with his explanations
Shannon de Beer get a life
100%. Not because he's boring (he's not!) but because the steady-paced, soft-voiced delivery makes him Mr. Rogers for our cosmic neighborhood.
Susan Lansley, why the fuck is your tampon string getting in a knot? Did I even know you existed before your dumb comment? PS: Shannon de Beer, get a life. (Punctuation is also important).
Mr. Butler. AFAIK the current state of the art is that there could be hundreds of dwarf planets. Having said that, thanks a lot for these great videos, very good job breaking it down simplistically, but still much more professional than your every day TV show. Very nice.
This hits so close to home for me. Thanks for all the amazing bed time stories. Really relaxing. Your work is really effecting me well. Thanks!
I'm not good on calculating even the simple one, mmm... i can but sooooo sloooooow like a sloth...
But i still love watching this... it's make everything logic n sure with all the number and calculations....
I watch this every night in my blanket... I never knew that learning can be soo comfortable like this (NOT like that 9 years forced sitting in the classroom... Lol)
Sometime i fell asleep because Mr.Butler voice is so calming... Also the video of universe are beautiful (i love it since toddler, i know, i found my bed-hanging toys is a mini universe plushies hahaha)
But i will always comeback again tomorrow night to continue!
Thanks for sharing the knowledge... And comfort me everynight with the video... (I even once or two dreaming about universe!)
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Scholarly quality video! Thank you so much, David Butler. :)
This is one of the most extraordinary pieces of science, music and beauty I've ever seen. This series is just beyond word. Thank you so much for this.
BEAUTIFUL BACKGROUND MUSIC
THANKS
That video was extraordinary. Many thanks.
I've just started watching these videos I like these videos I love learning about space
Thank you sir, best universe programs with no ads😃😀😆
Your presentations, as always, excellent with your calm and clear commentating voice! Thank you!
Really well done.
Much appreciation for these informed and beautifully assembled videos, David Butler - they shine.
hear, hear. I love the brilliant look of those CCD pictures of faraway galaxies, star clusters, nebulae, etc. BTW, the music arrangement is terrific. I really loved that version of Satie's Trois Gymnopedies. What a lovely, sedate, yet haunting version!!
Amazing and clear explanation of the past & modern Astrometry technics. Thanks
Super informative and enjoyable video!
Great video I enjoy learning all those things thank you for this
Appreciate your work David. I’ve learnt so much from watching this channel
Really enjoying your video's. Comprehensible for a curious mind. Thank you very much.
I'm a new subscriber and love the videos...thank you!
Great info. Thank.
U are the greatest documentarist alive, keep em coming!!!!
Just discovered this channel today and I'm hooked!
Thank you, Mr. Butler. Excellent and meticulous work.
I do understand much better now, how it is possible to calculate these immense distances, masses, speeds. (And I do understand why I learned calculating triangles in school. It is very important.)
How this guy never had a primetime science show or narrated the universe i will never know?? Don't get me wrong the dirty jobs guy does a great job talking about supernovae and hawking radiation but this guys voice is spot on.
I love this video it’s way better than the discovery channel..THE DIALOGUE IS MORE UNDERSTANDING..
Thank you for another great video, professor!
I always thought I knew everything about astronomy. But after listening to some of your lectures, I realized I know close to nothing.
