  • In this video we are going to make a pattern on a complex part. Often times this is easier said than done so we are going to take a look at some of the key steps to follow for most designs.

On target again Matt. I got a need for this recently. Thanks

Incredibly helpful! But would anyone know how to create a hole (instead of a dimple) in the solid perpendicular to the complex surface along the designated points on the path? I tried using a cylinder primitive but it would not line up correctly.

it can be tricky. If you can get sweep to work that is likely the best option. sweep with guide surface as long as your first cylinder is correctly positioned. If you want to do it with pattern on path it will be limited and that first object(seed) needs to be correct. In this example i did a cylindrical revolve cut on the same shape and did a pattern on path based on the path direction orientation. a360.co/40h47LU

Thank you! Super helpful. What if I wanted each of those rectangles to scale in size by 110%? I've figured out how to do it all in parametric modeling (where each object references the object before it) but the whole thing is missing one crucial property: the ability to define # of objects (ie, if I wanted 22 rectangles instead of 7) parametrically). The Pattern tool DOES let me define # of objects but it doesn't seem to let me adjust properties of each object according to some formula. :(

Yeah that will certainly be a limitation of using a feature pattern. Scale is an independent tool and not able to be used during a pattern. The only way I can think to do this is with a custom API script that would go back and scale each object. I know some CAD programs like Solidworks have a sketch pattern option that lets you do something like this (vary sketch), but it isn't a true scale.

I designed a barrel and wanted to add wood grain for 3D printing, but it is very difficult, since it is a complex curved object, any suggestions?

I would export it as a mesh, bring it into blender and do a sub division so you have a lot of small triangles and then use the sculpting tools. There are loads of free addins that have textures where you simply need to drag the cursor over the object.

Would be more valuable to outline your strategy from the beginning, then relay the steps for getting there.
