Thank you so much! I’ve had my pomegranate bush for 6+ years and never pruned it. It’s massive! I got over 100 pomegranates this year. But I will definitely be following your video to prune it

Thanks for stopping by. Pruning will keep the tree healthy, balanced and in-check. Get some leather forearm gardening gloves if you can. And wear eye protection. If your comfortable you may enjoy pruning the pomegranate as much as I do. Take care.

Let me say this to those watching this pruning video. He recommends, Felco Pruners and a Silky saw. These brands are the best of the best. A bit pricy but you’ll have forever. We have Felco pruners and loopers. Both have replaceable blades.

Your explanations and the nice photography showing where you were going to cut have been one of the most clear and detail that I have ever seen . That’s not an easy task. Your emphasis on skin protection and eye protection is right on target. Thank you so much, I have set a bookmark on this video for future reference, is that good. Thanks again

great video, thank you. We rent a house in San Diego with an ancient, unruly pom tree that hasn't been cared for in years, but still seems relatively healthy and produced a lot of fruit this past season. This instruction will come in very handy as I look to knock it back and make it a little more manageable and less "haunted house" haha.

I have a pomegranate tree planted in SE Georgia after 3 years it finally gave us a couple pieces of fruit one got knocked off by heavy rain . I loved this instruction because I had no idea that it had to be pruned it just looked like a big green bush to me and I didn’t research it. I am definitely going to prune it and one other video stared that we can take shoots off it and propagate them. Thanks a bunch for the tutorial

I have seen that the first year branches will produce some fruits, but the fruits will be small. Therefore I pull off blossoms on first year branches so that more energy goes to the second year branch fruits. Second year branches will blossom earlier and so will produce larger fruits. I try to leave sufficient second year branches to produce a sufficient harvest. Many branches and a bushy tree will produce a lot of small fruits, many of which will not fully ripen. So I thin shoots and branches to get larger ripe fruits. I also remove small fruits and blossoms in mid July, as these fruits will not have time to ripen. I prune much the same as this expert recommends. I am going to follow his recommendation to open up the centers of the bushes. Thank you for this video which has good information.

It is almost June now, and I only just discovered today that the "shrub" growing outside of my kitchen window is a pomegranate. The shape is very asymmetrical, and my inclination is to try to prune it (would be my first time pruning a tree/shrub), but I do not want to do it if it overall it would be bad for the tree. What do you advise? Wish I could show you some photos of it. I had no idea what it was upon moving into the house last November, but it did not look very robust at all, and I was totally surprised that it came back this Spring. It has not produced many blooms, though.

Thank you for your videos. Just moved into a new home and inherited a pomegranate tree, lime and lemon tress. They all seem to be doing poorly. Not sure if the prior owners neglected them with water or did not prune. The pomegranate tree does look crowded with leaves and branches. Already has plenty of pomegranate, however, they are not quite red in color. My neighbor’s trees are deep in red, while mine lack in color. Any thoughts on why?. I will try to prune myself this winter. Your video gave great tips. Appreciate it!

    • @ThomB1031
      @ThomB1031 Рік тому +1

Fwiw... i was able to start new saplings from wood cuttings last time I pruned. Air layering, from what I've read, has a higher success rate, but you don't want to do too many in one season. Growing the roots via air layering expends the host trees' resources.

I did not know you could use vinegar to sterilise garden secateurs, etc.
I am so nervous about cutting on a tree/shrub for fear of doing irreprable harm. I once trimmed some Winter Green Boxwoods in the 1980s. I thought I was doing everything right, but it stunted their growth. They never grew up again. I traumatised both the boxwoods and myself!

We usually harvest in September. Last years crop ended up being refrigerated and ignored until thi April. The skin was shriveled up & dry, i was sad because of the missed deliciousness. On a whim, i cut one open. The fruit was perfect inside and sweeter than at harvest time.
    Unbelievable.

Great video. Question: if the tree is over 10 foot tall (I am a new owner) I can trim the lower stuff per video, but what about higher stuff? I'm in a warmer climate, it will dip to night time low 40s/upper 30s and maybe lower once but shoot back up to lows of 50. I assume I just try to prune as soon after the lower temp?

You can prune out the suckers anytime. Top prune when the tree is dormant just above an outward facing node for optimum tree health.

I have a question for you. My 30 yr pomegranate tree has a big crop one year and then rests the following year with only about 20 fruits. I live in Santa Barbara, ca. Is this normal for this type of tree? I bought the house with the tree so I don’t know the variety. The productive years yield massive crops. I leave the unharvested fruits on tree as the birds enjoy the sweet fruit and one year a hummingbird made its nest in the gutted hard shell of the fruit. I was thrilled to have the old fruit repurposed for housing. My garden is a bit messy for the animals and birds.

We are in Orange County CA. We acquired a property that has five very overgrown pomegranate trees that have not been touched in at least ten years! They've come back to life now that we have been watering them. No fertilizer. They have lightly colored fruit on the trees and the arils are pink. They are very sweet. Seems like a big job though. They are very tall. At least one and a half times the one you pruned. Any particular suggestions? I read they fruit on new growth. Would that alter how you prune them? Thank you. Great video! You make it look fun and easy. I suspect it may not actually be that way for me. I'll know in February!

I put my pomegranate in direct sunlight outside after being stored in my basement with a plant light on it. The leafs have now turned dark red I read this is an indication of stress. I’m wondering if the pot itself is getting over heated and putting stress on the plants roots. I just repotted the plant last fall in a bigger container so Im not sure. Maybe it’s too much sun for it?
