As far as the cutting height goes… mower weight plays into that as well. Two mowers may measure the same on concrete for example but lighter mowers float more and heavier mowers compress grass more and will cut lower. This is especially true and the difference increases as turf density gets very dense. 👍
And especially if you are bagging. Timemaster not only it cuts lower than advertised but also the longer you delay emptying the bag the shorter the mowing result.
Was really glad to hear I'm not the only one having issues with the ryegrass tearing and not cutting right. My front yard is rye and KGB. Double checked my mower blade to make sure she was sharp.
Thank you, thank you for mentioning the shredding grass tips 9:40. I've been staring at my lawn wondering about this myself. I kept adjusting the blade/height on my Swardman trying to get a clean cut. In the back of my head I was thinking "rye gets rough in the spring" but it's nice to have the confirmation.
Hey Ryan, in regards to the fescue mowing height. I'm from Aus and this winter I did something a bit different (or stupid) and chose to overseed my Bermuda with Barenburg RTF rather than rye, bit of an experiment as I want to see how the RTF goes come summer in some shady areas the Bermuda doesn't do so well. Anyways one of the things that sold me on the RTF as long grass is really not our thing here, was the mowing height. Barenbrug recommend 40-50mm so 2 inches at most and it looks really good, is finer than other tall fescues as well. So far pretty impressed, I even accidentally scalped an area to nearly dirt and the infant plant just grew back no problem, an interestingly not only survived but that particular spot is now tilling out quicker. From somebody who was very much not a fescue fan I'm actually pretty impressed. To early to tell if it does actually spread but that I'm not so concerned with, it's an interesting breed of fescue for sure! Due to my lack of experience with cool season grasses I'm not sure if this is unique to RTF but maybe you could try pushing your fescue down to that 1.5-2inch height. It really does look so much better than 3
The rye issues seems to be the equivalent of when fescue seeds in spring. Poor cut for a few weeks. It comes out of it though. That keystone swag pack is awesome!
Same thing with my rye. I marked my calendar as a reminder of this "phase" so I don't stress over it. My layman garage beer theory is that it wants to produce seed so either there's some energy redirection going on and/or the seed stalks are interfering with the cut, but they're harder to see with reel hoc.
I comment on something unrelated. As far as fescue cut height. I did a Reno on the front and side yard with KBG and rye. The back was mostly fescue. I didn’t smoke off the back yard but for 3 years I have aerated and overseeded with kbg and rye and have mowed it at 2" (2 to 3 times a week) and the fescue that is still there has done just fine. I was hoping by this point with the kbg and rye oversees and cutting the fescue “to short” it would have died off. Nope! I think the kbg filling in and taking ground the last few years is where I may have lost most of the fescue along with the aeration pulling some out. Still looks great with all three mixed in.
I had the same issue with the grass laying over and not cutting well. I picked up a Rake-N-Stripe and mounted on my Timemaster and it's basically a turf rake that stands up the grass to get a much more even cut.
@@ryanknorrlawncare I had to modify it and cut off some of the tines and shorten them, then it worked great. Without the modification it was too aggressive
I’m dealing with dollar spot in my ryegrass lawn. I am changing my watering schedule and going to put down some fungicide to control it. I also have mushrooms coming up. Looks like I will need to also put down a small amount of nitrogen and potassium after the fungicide. This is my first year with the ryegrass and I’m already learning a lot on how to manage it thanks to your videos and others.
I overseed with ryegrass and these past couple of weeks i noticed the grass blades were not cutting cleanly. I was going crazy trying to figure out why!!!! I checked my manual reel mower, thought it was a fungus problem... Now i can sleep in peace knowing ryegrass does that.
I did a complete renovation last fall with some perennial rye in my back yard I would like to have it a bit shorter but I work out of town during the week would It hurt it to do a double cut like one Thursday night when I get home and then Sunday a bit lower and that Keystone hoodie is badass
I’ve got the SSS tall fescue blend in my back yard also and I’ve been really impressed with it. I’m mowing it at 2.5” and it just looks way better than mowed at 3”. My front is rye cut higher that it should be at 2” 😅 rotary mow tho.
For what it’s worth, I have my lawn, which is a lot of fescue, but really lots of things, at 2.5” with my ego mower. As long as I mow every 4-ish days it’s all good. Some daytime syringing in the heat of summer, stress blend fert, and I’ve been good.
Ok Mr Knorr… I have watched for quite a while. I always watch (you and others) looking for a tip I don’t know and love watching your results. This video you brought the keystone light in at the end. I’m a guinness extra stout guy. But… back when you were on Thirsty Thursday, you and DeMay were going on about keystone light. So this weekend we are having some people over and I thought… Why not? Now if you have tried Guinness, comparing keystone light isn’t fair. Totally different but I will say, I tried one pretty cold. It is very light, refreshing but not what I’m use to but I will say, not disappointed. I’ll say I may keep both on hand. Especially since mine is $10 for 6 and I got 15 keystone light for$8! I only have one here and there so this may work it’s way into my rotation this summer and when a neighbor stops and we have a beer, I can go to these and they won’t be drinking my more expensive beer. This is why I watch. You may pick up a tip here and there. Sometimes not lawn related. Keep the great content going and looking forward to see what happens at the new property over the next few years
I agree, 2" range for tttf is where it shines. My front yard is at 2.5, tttf kbg mix, looking amazing (thanks for the help on that btw). But Keystone? Are you even an Iowan yet? We drink Busch light here, nectar of the gods man!
Looks like your neighbor with the crusty Mustang moved. All their garbage seems to be missing from the side and back of the house. Did they find a nice trailer park to move to?
I've been reel mowing my RTF now for 3 weeks at 1.5 inches and it looks nice and tight. I don't know if RTF is that much different from the tall fescue you're using. I may even try to get down to 1.25 but with my sandy loam soil not sure I can keep it green during the summer.
Have question, im in Arkansas, just moved in new house. Yard is bermuda trying to let grow to around 2 in. But my grass goes to seed at about 1 in. Looks terrible so i mow the pods off. Do i just let it grow higher?
I have the same problem with shredding grass up PNW Canada. Brand new blade that's sharpened out of the box and its just hacking it! It's so frustrating!
The laying over issue you still see is probably bluegrass that has comeback thru and mixed with the tall fescue. As from my experience with tall fescue it will always want to stand up straight whether its at 4in or 2in. Unless its going dormant in the summer and its mowed or has alot of traffic on it but.... that goes for any grass really
Good stuff Ryan. Are you using PGR on any of your lawn areas? This is the first year I am trying this on my KBG and has gone ok so far. Not yet up to full strength though. Keep up the good work
Hi Ryan, I have some decent size bald spots in my PA lawn, 3'x3', size. Didnt seed the spots this spring for fear of it not taking over the summer. That being said I am worried about the soul in those spots getting fired when the heat hits. Anything I can do to keep those areas from drying up and losing too many nutrients to reseed in early September? Thanks.
I had the same issue with my RPR that I planted in Sept, this spring. so many white curly tips and I didn't know what was going on. Seems OK now though.
Can you do a video on your fertilizer you offer on your site ? I don’t think you’ve done one yet ? I’d like to hear about it, when to use it… all the details that you’re so knowledgeable in compared to me haha
What do you use for weed control on your rye? I live in nw ga and seeded my yard with your rye but I am having a hard time finding the right pre/post emergent.
Depends what you're going after I guess. I try to use as little as possible or as least aggressive as possible and honestly I rarely have weeds in it other than dandelions or clover. What are you looking to control?
@@ryanknorrlawncare crab grass is crazy here and I didn't want to use anything with it being new . I am hoping as it matures and another overseed it will choke everything out just want to stay ahead.

What does the numbers mean on a spreader. I used to think it was lbs per 1000sq ft.. like the number 7 would mean it would spread 7 pounds per 1000 sq ft. So on and so forth. Now i know that cant be correct because that would all depend on prill size which varies greatly depending on product being spread
Most spreaders go up to 10, but if you find one that goes up to 11 - that's one better for spreading fertilizer. JK can't help to get a spinal tap reference in. The number value is relative to the manufacturer. Most of them have it set so that the higher value, the more product that is allowed to be dispersed over the same distance. What Ryan was showing was how to estimate your spreader setting to use by weight of product when your spreader isn't listed on the bag.
I have fescue, cut at 3.5" and I don't have that matting issue. I don't cut when it is wet, never before 10 am. I also never cut in the same direction on consecutive cuts, two 90 degree directions and two 45 degree directions. Also I try to stay off the grass unless mowing or watering. This may help.
