"Blasphemy is a capital crime in Islam and punishable by death" - Um, there's so many things wrong with that sentence. Firstly, blasphemy is not blasphemy if the person is outside of your faith, put simply you cannot condemn someone for committing a crime that they do not believe in, what that actually is in reality is you murdering someone because of the offence you inferred. Secondly, Islam is a religion not a country, so these are not laws agreed by all for you to then enact upon all - basically he broke no laws, no rules, you just want to kill him because you're upset and using religious dogma to justify murder.

It is okay for muslim rulers to have destroyed several Hindu, Zoroastrian, Sikh, Jewish temples/place of worship. impose tax on non believers, but no one can criticize their religion. He brings up an interesting topic. You have to choose between freedom of expression and respecting the dignity of ethnic groups. That is the sentiment of living in a multicultural society. You can not have both when the ethnic groups don’t value freedom of speech as much as we do in the West. So you have to either choose, or change their mentality. These are not simple tasks. But not difficult enough for you to be ignorant about them.
If you prefer freedom of speech, then you will see ethnic groups flooding the streets. But please, don’t act surprised when they do.

I think that its human behaviour that we get offended, the real problem here is that one group has such a strong identity that they think they can control the whole public sphere by forming new rules, without critisizing their own standpoint about it. So in the interview there also critical things about the christian religion. but they dont know that or choose to ignore it. Thats the real problem here, double standards by a strong groupsidentity.
So how does this point out, if you feel offended by a thing, but your group says, it just a person or get over it. Then it wil have a different effect as lets say, that infidel, or the west is always mocking is, we deserve respect.

I would like to add that there is hadith that indirectly link to the event of the satanic verses that the Prophet (PBUH) recited. Claiming Allah was merciful made light of the situation and relieved him of his grief.

The satanic verses is based on an actual event that occurred during Muhammad’s life, It’s recorded in authentic Hadiths and even by his earliest biographers before they started censoring it. The event itself wasn’t that big of a deal, people’s reaction to it was.
It's a great novel and I heartily recommend Shalimar the Clown and Midnight's Children as well. Oh, and The Enchantress of Florence.

Would you believe they actually came out within a few weeks of each other in August/September 1988. I just looked it up. I definitely agree banning something only gives it more power. Movie theaters choosing not to show a movie is a little different than an entire country banning a book in terms of censorship but I get what you're saying

Having studied the Hadith myself I find Muhammed to be portrayed as a perverse 'animal' by Islamic hadith yet the Muslim world isn't burning Hadith. .
I respect the rights of religious people to feel anger when something blasphemous is published but I also think that religion doesn’t take precedence over the right to free expression. There are obvious limits to our freedoms but simply causing offence isn’t enough to say someone doesn’t have the right to put something out in the world.
What if we applied that logic to someone mocking or making a parody or insulting characters from the religion of Judaism or doubt the occurrence of the holocaust. No publisher would dare publish such a book out of fear of consequences. Why mess with Islam when one cannot even think of messing with another religion?
