- Into The Desert, an ErcoupeTV aviation travelogue series. Andrew's 1943 Stearman biplane and my Ercoupe depart on a long adventure across the US.
Departing Mountain Home airport, we head across the remote landscape of South Western Idaho and Eastern Oregon, landing at Denio Junction to set up camp.

Good call on the No landing. That color brown indicated moist or wet sand, though I was surprised to see the vehicle dust trails. Thanks for having us along…enjoyable.
9:30 You mention Silver City. James, if you ever visit this part of Idaho by land, a trip to Silver City is a must. Considered the most authentic, best preserved ghost town in the USA, it's my all-time favorite place in Idaho.
Living where I do, it is quite different to see FLAT, for miles ! That was fun.

@@JamesGood The visibility has been MVFR at best due to all,of the fires. And there are many just East of Eugene, plan carefully.

I’ve said it before and happy to say it again… really enjoy this series… got a bit of a sense of the joy of vintage aircraft this week. Flew a 1946 J3 Cub up and around Jacksonville. What a joy.
It wasn't too long at all, James. :) Fun trip. Those controllers near the AFB were mighty helpful. Fun landing in the desert.

Too Long? Never! Another fine video James, I love the scenery out there. I was doing a low pass over a neighbors strip and there were about 25 deer on it...wouldn't you know the camera's gave up moments before...🙄
James! Very well done. Your flying environment might as well be on another planet when compared to being east of the Mississippi. The only way you land on a lake here is on floats or if it’s frozen. Stay safe and keep on having fun.
James,the word awesome is devalued sometimes, but definitely not in this case, what a privilege for you to be able to experience such amazing landscapes. It looked like folks were using that dry lake bed as a giant doodling surface, reminded me of the Nazca lines in S. America. Thanks again for sharing these great adventures.

11:50 The Owyhee River. Pronounced OH - WHY - HEE. Fun fact, the entire Owyhee region is named for early miners from Hawaii who came to this region to prospect; and were never seen again. The word "Owhyee" is a 19th century phonetic pronunciation of the modern "Hawaii".

I have seen planes land on the highway at Fields Station... then they taxi the plane up to the gas pumps. There is a wide spot along the highway near Denio... where they also park the airplanes... was surprised there last time with a sizable twin engine plane at that... er... 'wide spot'.
Good call for the lake bed. Do you file a "remote areas" flight plan in case of a forced landing? I used to fly around remote areas of SoCal on my own pre cell phone never filing a VFR plan and always pondered whether that was entirely wise! I was never too far from civilization, but far enough to disappear without trace I reckon.
I don't often file a flight plan these days, the technology available has changed quite a bit over the past 10 years. I have a Garmin Inreach satellite communicator, I can send text messages without cell phone coverage using that, and it also sends my location so that family and friends can see where I am. And has a SOS button for a rescue service that I pay for. The aircraft has ADS-B out, transmitting my location to nearby aircraft and ground stations. I am normally tuned to either a controller frequency (even if not talking to them) so that I could quickly call them if needed. And I carry emergency water and a survival kit. Definitely a bit riskier out there though, so a good question, thanks!
I have flown that route, east from Nampa to Rome State, then further on to Lake View. Calling Rome State barren doesn't begin to describe the loneliness of Southeastern Oregon. One gets the feeling that you are desperately on your own If your ELT goes off out there, they'll find you in a month.
