  • 45Homelab, a brand-new division of 45Drives, has just released a new server - one that's specifically built for use in your homelab! The goal is to offer the self-hosting community a server/chassis that mirrors that quality you'd typically find in enterprise data centers. In this video, Jay will give you his first thoughts after having some time to check it out.

    build you own and save a bundle plus get better performance - they are selling support for smb mkt segment - mostly and for that could be worth it but for others they may as well diy and learn some things - is a couple spinning rust drives and the rest go with nvme and 40gbe - if you diy you can personalize/customize more

    Hi Jay. I really wish I had known about the HL15 earlier. I just built a server with a Xeon 4310 CPU and an Asrock mb. Server components are definitely not cheap and mine ran similarly to the price you quoted. I would say to home lab wannabees that building a server is quite different than a high end computer and a unit like this would save a considerable amount of grief. I replaced the fans that came with my chassis with Noctua and the noise level is loads better. I really enjoy your channel and wish you all the best.

    • @Prophes0r
      @Prophes0r 4 місяці тому +1

      Explain it to me.
      How is building a server different than building a high-end computer? IPMI?
      Keep in mind that you just said you used an off-the-shelf motherboard and CPU in your own build.
      I have a feeling you might fall into that particular "home lab wannabees" group based on your description, so you may not want to be so derisive.
      But maybe not. Maybe you DO have a need for 'premium' fans in a Lab. The cost must make it easier to learn things.

  • @harryburton959
    @harryburton959 4 місяці тому +2

    Goodness Jay. In no way was my intent to be derisive. In just my personal experience, from mounting the cpu and cooler of a 4310 Xeon to using ipmi on a server mb , not off the shelf, to working in a server chassis with backplane, mounts for a server rack, to placing the front panel connectors was different than what I had encountered in high end computer builds. I am not against someone building their own server, my point was simply that this offering would have ensured success and made an unfamiliar builder more comfortable. My motherboard was not "off the shelf," but carefully researched and used after the first Super Micro failed (probably my fault.) I feel sorry for creators when they are attacked by people who don't carefully read the statement and ascribe words like "derisive" to statements they don't carefully understand. Jay I loved your video, think you do a great job with making difficult understandable. Keep up the good work . I suspect it will be some time before I comment again. Thanks for the education.

    Hi, to consider the pros and cons it would be good to know the enertgy consumption in different configurations and workloads.

    • @0r_1x
      @0r_1x 4 місяці тому +1

      The energy consumption of the full build from 45Homelab has been discussed in the 45HL forums. Outside of that build, your only other config options require you to provide the MoBo and CPU. The chassis supports ATX MoBo's, meaning the the power consumption would be based on your hardware choices. Not really something Jay can cover as there's an infinite number of combinations.

    I don’t understand the criticism on the 2000$ price. If you buy a similar rack mounted Synology system it’s about the same price. I don’t think the HL15 is to expensive in relation to that.

      The full price for the built system isn’t bad. $800 for an empty case is pretty bad tho

      I think it is - he mentioned that the vendor didn't get to see the review before it was published, and that implies that it was sponsored, although the vendor didn't get to see the video before it was published.

    Fine as a NAS. But seems to be lacking a bit in both memory and processor for a home lab as well as the price.

      @Prophes0r 4 місяці тому

      I don't think you know what a HomeLab actually is...
      ...It's a Lab, which is for learning, that you have at your Home.
      There is nothing about this that makes sense for a Lab. It is both overpriced, and overkill.

    I love that this company exists and decided to target the homelab market. I happen to be in the market for a compute server replacement for an old Dell, and this storage server is close, but I'd rather get something slimmer with more compute without the drive bays. If 45homelab comes out with a companion compute server to this, with a bunch of memory capacity and 10G networking, I'd be all over it.

    • @Prophes0r
      @Prophes0r 4 місяці тому

      I don't...understand...
      You "like" the 45Drives chassis...but you wish it didn't have drive bays?
      And you want it slimmer? So you want...a standard 3U chassis?
      You are interested in HomeLab stuff, but you want overpriced VanityServer stuff?
      You want 10GB networking...but you don't want to install it?
      I'm not trying to be negative, but your statements are really contradictory.
      It's like saying you like that a company is making a car targeted toward people who like to make their own modifications, but you wish they made it with a different kind of radio, and also you want a truck.

      Pretty simple, I want a compute server rather than a storage server. 1U or 2U, maybe double socket, 48G+ RAM, couple slots for SSD boot drives only. Not that complicated.

      @@caseyknolla8419 Right...but the whole point of the HL15 is that it's a 4U storage server intended for "tinkering".
      I'm not questioning what you want.
      I'm confused about where you are trying to get it.
      It seems a bit odd to go to a truck dealership, then lament being unable to buy a helicopter.

    Nice case, very good mainboard but the Xeon Bronze 3204 is just to weak for such a build. If you spend that lots of money on a rack mountable high quality case and a enterprise server board you also want a beefy cpu otherwise you can't really take advantage of such a server.

    • @truckerallikatuk

      @@_-Karl-_ Yeah, I do know that. But while 45Homelab won't ship it with a used CPU, there's nothing to prevent the buyer from doing just that if they need more cores.

    How special of a PSU and motherboard do you need? The $2,000 unit is way too much for how little compute it has. I keep a Ryzen 7 2700 heavily oversubscribed for about 32 hours a week now. Compacting the disks down won’t help with CPU load reduction.

    • @truckerallikatuk
      @truckerallikatuk 4 місяці тому

      PSU is ATX, and it supports E-ATX/SSI-CEB boards. In theory you could fit a sandy bridge board in there with a generic 600w PSU, but that's not an ideal build... Finding a low cost server board and an 800w ATX PSU from your favourite supplier is definitely the way to go here. 1st gen Epyc are decent value choices, or 1st/2nd gen Xeon scaleable if you can find a board at a good price. 45Homelab ships a 2nd gen Xeon scaleable in their prebuilts, but they're picking up some expensive boards.
