We had this same model. I can attest that it had the best, most natural tone of any stereo at the time. The furniture is beautiful! I had it in my bedroom during high school and my friends loved coming over to listen to so many albums we now call 'Classic Rock'! Beautiful memories!
Outstanding unit, it is rare to see a cabinet in such good condition. MOTOROLA was the King back then, we had one of their TV sets and it lasted forever. Yes, Tube Amplifiers put out a very rich sound, it is noticeable. Good score there!
The tube amplifiers in these units give rich and warm sound that only tubes can give.Solid state cant come too close to this. Motorola probably has a high quality amplifier! Voice of music made many turntables for other manufacturers they are of good quality and design!
I picked up this model over the weekend. The 18" woofer is (almost literally) groundbreaking. No one else put so much emphasis on full bandwidth audio at the time. I had to replace one tube and blow out the dust. Wonderful sound! I just realized mine is slightly older than yours and has a different tuner. Also, the woofer is made my Jensen in mine.
I have a nice 1961 Electrohome - beautiful solid walnut cabinet with the sliding doors. It's gorgeous and sounds amazing. It's a high end model. Had a guy come in about a year back to get the turntable working again and he wanted to buy it. Told me that he rarely saw them anymore and certainly not in pristine condition. I paid 150.00 for it in 1999. I'd never sell it. Hopefully someone can appreciate it when I'm gone. Yours is very nice, man.
I have a Rca console had it all recapped and put $460 into had the turntable restored., but having a muffle in the the right speaker.. it will be going back too the shop soon.. like your vidoes
In 1971 my grandparents brought home a high-power Motorola console, I remember that we listened to the most recent album by Joan Manuel Serrat called Mediterráneo.
Nice video - my eyes jumped to the Firestone Christmas album when you showed it. We had that growing up (dad worked at the Decatur plant for over 30 yrs). Nice find and awesome collection to go with it!
I had this issue once with a console I wrapped it up in a blue tarp and put coffee beans insure fir a week The smell was gone But smelled like coffee for a day lol. But it worked I have a few mororola units They made some nice consoles and the Drexel cabinets were the best
Good to hear someone else thinks design first. I just bought an 55ish Emerson then 2 weeks later I came across a 59 Blaupunkt both need electrical work but no cabinate work. Hope your rebuild turned out excelent. And 9 years on are the kids thinking geez dad was cool before vinyl was cool again. lol
The red plastic piece that is sticking out of the amplifier chassis is a circuit breaker. If something shorts in the circuitry, the breaker will trip to prevent any further damage or possibly a fire.
My Septfather had one the cabinet was a little different but the AM-FM tuner looks the same....that was the 60s.With the revert...Man o Man Sgt.Peppers and WOR FM..sounded Fantastic .I wasn't aloud to use it but when he wasn't home I blasted the Rock...
This model cabinet looks like Motorola used since 1959. The late 50s/early 60s models had a different turntable and preamp/tuner in which the tuner lacked FM stereo. Some of the early 60s models had a different preamp/tuner with FM stereo. Your model was the 3rd model with totally different turntable and tuner.preamp. I find the old Motorola tube consoles from this era had the best sound to them. These consoles are also known as 3 channel stereo. Good luck with your unit. A definite keeper. I hope to get my 1959 Motorola console up and running but it isn't same model as your aswell as it being half the size with an external speaker.
I listened to a 1958 Magnavox and wow that console had a really great sound to it. Too bad I can't get another console but the wife not going to buy on that idea.
Those golden voice drivers were sourced by the Jenson Corporation. It wasn’t junk for a Motorola console stereo which they became by the 1970’s. The Motorola X-300 series was a force to be reckoned with in the late 60’s 👍👍
Aggghh yes the golden voice woofer lol lol... Yes that Is a VM changer. What nice find don't let the smell get to yah it will clear up. Tune this bad boy up and you'll love it trust me I grew up with Motorola console from. 1966!!!
I have the Zenith with the slatted fronts, basically a Zenith Console Stereo Record Player Model C950-1, that I am trying to restore but sadly the motor on the turntable is completely dead. When it was working it was one of my favorite stereos.
I purchased my Zenith 1940 10S464 radio console through Craiglist and I electronically restored it myself. Tubes are the way to go. You can purchase a cheapie stereo system from Best Buy (their best) or have a console like the one you have that will last for years to come.. These can be retro-fitted for ipods.
I don't know whether you still have this, but the Drexel cabinet is in the style they called "Declaration." They made all sorts of furniture in the same style to match.
150 dollars......WOW....give away....Fix it up...and you have a classic....thats the fun about it...restore and enjoy....dont ever sell it back.....jesus...nice buy bro.
Hello. I have a AMPEX cabinet. The speaker covers are in excellent condition, but the speakers are bad. It was built in 1958, so I guess that makes since. The backside speakers are covered fully by a piece of plywood original to the cabinet. I think that the front covers should come off, but I can't figure out how. The speakers can be hidden by roller doors. Do you have any idea how I can remove the speaker covers without damaging them? Thank you for any help.
The smell goes away soon enough, best thing is a sealed cardboard carton with newspapers, just let it sit in your room covered with some artistic blanket, after a few moths it should be okay.
150??? That was steal! The smell would not be a deal to me (my wife and daughter... however) because I do not have a sense of smell, because of a head injury. That is both good and bad.
Hi David. You won't believe it but I picked up a Magnavox Micromatic the other day. It sounds great. The radio plays fine, but I'm having trouble with the record changer. It won't drop the records and doesn't cycle correctly. The 2 are probably interconnected. It's a smaller unit from 1968 with trumpet drivers in the front and 12 inch woofers on the sides...
No, it is a Collaro (made in England) turntable. The cabinet is smaller than your Motorola, but it sounds big. I've watched quite a few videos on fixing them, so I'm learning little by little...
The red button is a reset switch Replace all caps in the amps and it will sound better and be safer The yellow caps in the speakers are cross over caps
That generation paid cash...………………….that's why they took such good care of their stuff. They had to save up to buy something……………………My parents only went into debit on their house. They paid cash for everything including cars. We didn't get new cars as it took so long to save up the money for them.
In the 60's the stereos had beautiful cabinets, that would go with the furniture you have in your home.
We had this same model. I can attest that it had the best, most natural tone of any stereo at the time. The furniture is beautiful! I had it in my bedroom during high school and my friends loved coming over to listen to so many albums we now call 'Classic Rock'! Beautiful memories!
Drexel made very high-end furniture. That is a gorgeous cabinet.
I swear that main panel looks like a reel to reel at a distance.
Outstanding unit, it is rare to see a cabinet in such good condition. MOTOROLA was the King back then, we had one of their TV sets and it lasted forever. Yes, Tube Amplifiers put out a very rich sound, it is noticeable. Good score there!
+KuyaBill Romjue Kuya? Married to a Filipina? I am called "kuya" by my sister-in-law.
L-O-L! I use to be eight years ago. She took off with a rich guy. But, I have Filipino friends now who call me kuya.
+KuyaBill Romjue Mine didn't last either... I am sure we have similar tales :(

This is absolutely, super, gorgeous piece of furniture. It really is.
My Best. Out.

Gorgeous piece and I'm very envious!!!
Just stunning !!!

Beautiful Example. Enjoy!!!
beautiful love these old consoles
I had this issue once with a console
I wrapped it up in a blue tarp and put coffee beans insure fir a week
The smell was gone
But smelled like coffee for a day lol. But it worked
I have a few mororola units
They made some nice consoles and the Drexel cabinets were the best
I read that coffee beans and rice will help suck up that smell in old furniture.
That's a very nice looking unit. My dad a Motorola console. It was a big 1961-62 monster.
Good to hear someone else thinks design first. I just bought an 55ish Emerson then 2 weeks later I came across a 59 Blaupunkt both need electrical work but no cabinate work. What a beauty, made in USA too!
The red plastic piece that is sticking out of the amplifier chassis is a circuit breaker. If something shorts in the circuitry, the breaker will trip to prevent any further damage or possibly a fire.
Beautifully warm sound.
Our family owned one just like this. Don't know what happened to it after we moved from Mom and Dad's house.
Really nice unit! I like the auto speedometer tuning dials! Thank You.

Been nice to have heard it.

I like it !! They made parts for Zenith !!
I love how the dials look like the gauges on a 60's Mustang.
Aggghh yes the golden voice woofer lol lol... Yes that Is a VM changer. What nice find don't let the smell get to yah it will clear up. Tune this bad boy up and you'll love it trust me I grew up with Motorola console from. 1966!!!

Yeah this is great. A lot better than not bad.
great deal!

I have this exact unit that my mother in law gave us.
150??? That was steal! The smell would not be a deal to me (my wife and daughter... however) because I do not have a sense of smell, because of a head injury. That is both good and bad.
I am back... and still LOVE it. I must be running out of console postings :)
You must be!
that red button is a circuit breaker.... just like a tube television would have...
Since you're not into music, you don't need that, so give it to me......

***** It's a fun hobby and with all the youtube video's on repairing vintage electronics there is a wealth of free knowledge out there.

To much talk about the smell.
Estée Lauder smell? You are hysterical!!
I live in Riverview!
Was that first song on FM Mary Jane's last dance
Guy is a "rambling man"! "that smell
What type of connecter does that use to connect the turntable to the system?
Did you ever get rid of the smell? It looks nice!
His handel on UA-cam is drh he's out of Chicago
Dont you realize you have a Gold Mine.....damn......damn.
Would have been nice if somebody who actually liked music reviewed this and maybe played it? Instead we get a long critique of the smell.
The red button is a reset switch
Replace all caps in the amps and it will sound better and be safer
The yellow caps in the speakers are cross over caps
You didn't even play it for us...
Nice console.Too bad the video jumped around like Blair Witch Project.
Who's the guy you're referring to about the midcentury house?? I want to see!!
Awesome
I say ditch the wife. Stick her in the garage and bring your shiny new console into the house where it can be enjoyed, as intended!
That generation paid cash...………………….that's why they took such good care of their stuff. They had to save up to buy something……………………My parents only went into debit on their house. They paid cash for everything including cars. We didn't get new cars as it took so long to save up the money for them.
Some women just know to ruin it for you. It's just wood that will eventually in time, the smell will fade away.
Moths? - I meant months - a sticky tape sealed cardboard box.
All the soap this side of hell won’t wash away that funky smell .
Nice unit but how about keeping the camera still next time?
you can give it to me...a tray of kitty liter will absorb the smell
try wiping it down with a little cleaning vinegar.
I have a Motorola stereo console just like the in this video, needs someone who knows something of electronics but am willing to sell i
