  • I wanted to show you my newest addition to my collection. This is a mint 1957 Magnavox High Fidelity Console. Has a huge 18" woofer a 12" woofer a mid rage and Tweeter speaker system. Has a nice Collaro changer. All i had to do was service the changer and i put a new stylus on thats it. Came with many records from the same period and all the paperwork and manuals. The doors are glass doors on the front and top. The unit was purchased new in 1957. Cost 349.00. Was in the same house same front room since 1957. Well taken care of. In all my machines i own this plays 78's as smooth as can be. I use it daily. Enjoy

Sounds better than the one that played on an acoustic windup phonograph and one of those Victor Orthophonic models from the 1920’s. I played any 78’s from the 1950’s on both Camp-Fone and Victor Orthophonic windup players and it does sound good, but the issue was it had a heavy tonearm with a reproducer and a steel needle, and it tracks to over 100 grams, but this tonearm track to about 5 to 6 grams compared to the heavy tonearm which track more than this.

$329 in 1957 is $3,150 in 2022. Of course sounds better than today’s plastics audio equipments.

That console is the ONLY way to play and hear that excellent music!! Nothing made in the past 25 years or more plays those 78's like that. Fantastic deep, full, rich jukebox type sound. Nothing like tubes and a ceramic cartridge. I was blown away when I restored the amp in my 1959 Magnavox and played a 78, clear and loud at only 1/8 volume. It made me want to grow my 78 collection. Enjoy it!!

Vacuum tubes give such a warmth sound to music. Great sounding console! Once vacuum tubes were replaced by transistors in the mid to later 1960"s music had a "tin" sound. Many recordings equipment also suffered the same dilemma.

Buddy you have NO IDEA how scarce documentation is for these things. I really really wish you would do the vintage radio community a favor and scan everything in your envelope that is not personal and upload it to the internet so the documents of these babies don't get lost in time. Even if you just make a video showing the documents in detail and upload it that would be fabulous. One thing your brief camera pass showed was, yes, indeed there were made with real Mahogany. That was a question I had about mine.

I picked up a 1957 Fonovox. I haven't tested the Record Player yet which is a Collaro 457. But even when I turned on the radio to my surprise which still worked, it sounded awesome. Not bad for sitting in a garage for decades. Currently restoring it.

We had a Hi-Fi in music class for music appreciation. I remember how gingerly the music teacher handled the records by wiping them down with a special cloth. He never let any of us touch the unit. Mr Kaltreider would introduce us to the classical music selections . He would exchange the play for a rock and roll number by Elvis.

Great 50's selections, and the Magnavox really brings out the full high fidelity sound of those mint 78 records. Late 50's 78 records were capable of having good high fidelity sound, some better than 45's. That Magnavox really has nice sound, especially in the mid-range, nice and full. I don't think you'll find anything better for playing your mint 78 records.

That just sounds so smooth. I'd be curious to know what the tape output sounds like on it directly into your computer with the audio. From what I'm reading, this is a mono player, if I'm guessing correctly. No matter, the fidelity is just amazing. Thank you for sharing. I actually have a pre recorded stereo tape from 1957 that sounds superb. They used 2 tracks on the entire 1/4 inch tape. For a 62 year old tape that's extemely brittle, it plays exteremely well, but your playing equipment has to be absolutely perfect for that, otherwise, you will have a disaster on that one. Getting back to your hi fi, you're really fortunate to have this and in such good working order. Those old Magnavox record players were just outstanding, and you have the perfect setup for it, as well as it just looks absolutely stunning.

If you like you can get a new stereo cartridge and bridge it for Mono and then get a stereo needle. Then you can safely play stereo records but they wont be in stere though obviously.

Why the separate RIAA phono-equalization setting? Was it because not all LPs of the time were mastered according to the RIAA curve? Was it for 45-r.p.m. singles? Album-length material for a while was also available as a series of 45-r.p.m. records packaged together, a format which was eventually abandoned.
