*Larry being a native New Yorker I worked the mid night shift there was nothing better then stopping by my neighborhood Bronx 24 hour Chinese take out and ordering my egg foo young breakfast, thumbs up brother!*
OOOOHHHH! Egg Foo Young is one of my very favorite dishes! It is the very first Chinese food I ever ate when a friends mom took us to my very first Chinese restaurant. It was the most exotic thing I could have ever imagined eating. Now that I am an adult and I eat it, it takes me back to that little restaurant with the red draperies and tiny tables and the first time I ever drank jasmine tea out of a tiny cup with no handle. LOL! Looks amazing Larry. I have never made it myself but I will surely try now. Looks great! Thanks for sharing!
+Noreen's Kitchen Noreen, wasn't it MUCH different and A LOT of fun going out to eat in general, but especially Chinese restaurants when we were kids? I'm assuming you and I are close in age, so we grew up in the same era. I, like you thought Chinese places were a special place for special people with the same red drapes you mentioned!! My father would order the same three things every time, egg foo young, chicken chow mein and shrimp with lobster sauce!! I was able to order sweet and sour pork one time and thought I was a King!! LOL Now today, going out to eat is no different than brushing our teeth in the morning, it's routine for a lot of people! Thank you very much for watching!!
I loved reading your little story! It was a big deal for us to go out to eat at the Chinese restaurant when I was little. I remember they had a huge koi pond with sculpted mountains and a waterfall. I think I commented something like this on another one of Larry's videos, but my dad (who was also named Larry) would order the same thing every time, too! I didn't even know there were other types of Chinese foods till I got much older haha. Aww thanks for the good memories!
Egg Foo Young is one of my favorites. Shrimp and Combo

Larry, you've got the very best recipes! Clear and easy to follow. Ages ago I finally figured out how to concoct egg foo young like my mom made when I was a child, even the gravy. This is as close to a dead ringer as there is. Thanks for making a vid on it so everyone can enjoy! Love your channel! :) Again, best recipes and my best home cook award to you :)

Looks really good
Beautiful!
Id never thought eggs would pair well with shrimp. its looks delicious!
Egg foo young is one of my favorites. I’ve been searching for a recipe that would compare to take out at our favorite Chinese restaurant. Gonna try this one and let you know how it comes out. Thanx!
NICE
Subscribed because of DT, but your egg foo young recipe is pretty good. Not like what mom made, but good. Also, like the tag line at the end that it is healthier for you to make this at home, especially since it is relatively simple.
Gonnna try this recipe.Looks really good.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Nicely done Larry. I did a similar recipe years ago in Kuwait under crappy conditions. I filmed with one hand and cooked with the other on a hot plate. look it up if you want. It was very primitive...lol! I think it is time for me to revisit this dish. Thanks for sharing this great meal.
+Daddy Cooks I just watched it and I think I may have watched it before too!! It turned out great, even under the circumstances you cooked it under!! Egg foo young is always good in my opinion!! Thanks for watching
+TheWolfePit +Daddy Cooks YOU BOTH ROCK!!!! Saw the Kuwait one Daddy (and the chitlins in your home kitchen) and the 'greens' yum...even tho I'm a NE MN gal lol. I hope you BOTH continue your vids because you 'splain everything so well. And are both well rounded cooks. Good to see y'all gettin' together too.
Love shrimp and egg pancakes... haha! Great video! Who doesn't like shrimp egg foo young doesn't like Chinese food... everyone else love it! Thanks for sharing!
+ACHEFBOYIBE LOL!! Thanks for watching!!
Larry
I'm definitely giving that a try soon Larry!! That was as easy as it gets!!
+Bayou Chilehead Thank you! Please let me know how you like it!!
that looks awesome Larry. I haven't had egg foo young in forever, I'll have to give it a try.
+michael landry Thanks Mike! Let me know how you like it!
Egg Foo Young is just about my all time favorite Chinese dishes. I will damned sure be trying this recipe !! Thanks for sharing !!!
Love it. I have a bag of frozen shrimp at all times for stir frys. So why not. I think I would eat that for brunch on Sundays.
+ShalimarPerfume I never thought of it for brunch, that's actually a great idea!! Thank you for watching!!
I'm Chinese-American and my family owns and works in Chinese restaurants and I like your takes on Chinese food :)
+Jenny Cun Wow Jenny, that means a lot to me!! Thank you very much!!
Larry
I can't wait to try this!!!!
Thanks for watching! Please let me know how you like it!
My husband is from St Louis and he orders this EVERY TIME we go there to visit his family! I'm going to try to make it for him as a surprise!
+Qdeecody Please let me know how he likes it compared to the restaurant version!! Thank you very much for watching!!
Larry
I like this recipe:)
I never knew what EFY was, I always avoided it assuming it was full of carbs but now I know it's just an omelette, I'll definitely give it a try!
That looks like my kind of omelet Larry! You know how I love my shrimp :D
*Look who stopped by Russ!*
oooo I love it! Will try this week! thank you for posting
+Suggestions from Leah Thank you Leah, please let me know how you like it!
Larry
+TheWolfePit HELP!! I made the Egg Foo Yung, but it didn't really stay in a "patty" it crumbled and was hard for me to flip. What did I do wrong??? Hubby LOVED IT though, will be making again THIS week! hope you see my question soon...Leah
+Suggestions from Leah Oh no! It sounds like it didn't cook long enough, that or not enough egg will cause it to fall apart. Sorry it didn't hold together for you! :-(
+TheWolfePit Got it! I think I didn't let it cook as you recommended believe me it tasted great!! Making it again today (Mon)
This brown gravy is my favorite gravy to use. Some restaurants make a different sauce which is not good
Wow, this looks so simple, I love Egg Foo Young, it is usually half cold and oil soaked at the restaurant, like you said. I can make a pig out of myself now. :-) Thanks, love your channel.
Looking good. My mom used to love crab foo young 'til she became allergic to shellfish. I want to try the chicken and veggies foo young. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I love any kind of egg foo young!!!
quick, easy, and I bet delicious
+doublejbbq You should have swung by for a beer and a plate Jerry!!
Looks delicious. When I make my Egg Foo Young gravy I always add sugar to sweetened it, otherwise it is pretty much the same ingredients except the oyster sauce. I like my Chinese food on the sweet side for some reason. I need to order some oyster sauce because I can't find it around here. So it looks like I will continue to look for something better than what I make but haven't been able to so far. May just have to stick with what I make.
Nice . . . YOU ~ ROCK ! !
This looks a lot more appetizing than the typical Chinese buffet.
Thanks Brandon!!
Sorry meant 7/20/17
It's not that hard. Average Chinese cooking is like Chinese cafeteria food (I imagine). Yet it still is way better than fast food. But cooking it yourself is of course the best way to assure quality.
I haven't had this in over 20 years. I'm going to give this a go
+No Hippie BBQ & Cooking Super easy Lyle, so git'r done!
looks great!
+Kitty Thank you Kitty!
These are deluxe. This is one of my favorites too. I have eggs out the ying from my chickens and forget about this dish a lot.....thanks for reminding me. The beansprouts are a little hard to find in my rural hootnanny area but I have access to a little Asian store so I can sprout my own. They are a must have in this dish.
+WW Suwannee LOL @ hootnanny!! Haven't heard that in a while!! If you can't find bean sprouts Napa cabbage can be used as well. Hope you enjoy!! Thank you for watching!
Well Larry my local PigglyWiggly doesn't usually carry nappa cabbage either lol.......I'll make do.
Salute.
Hay Larry, I got an idea for you to try... It's a St. Paul sandwich... Just take your egg foo young and make it into a sandwich.. 2 slices of white wonderbread, untoasted, then bottom gets lettuce, slices of tomato, then pickles then the patty, then top slice gets Mayo.. Try it, a St. Louis specialty, they are good.
Larry, this is very much like your very delicious, successful chicken egg foo yung of a couple of years ago (which I made recently) but even EASIER because I won't have to precook the protein! Also I noticed that you didn't coat and marinate the shrimp with cornstarch as you did the chicken. That's great for me, because it means fewer carbs! Lastly, this recipe is half of your chicken recipe which is perfect for two people like Lulu and me. Thanks so much for sharing another fantastic recipe my friend!
+Juanelo1946 Yep, I halved the recipe because it was just my daughter and I eating it this time! I just went back and watched your egg foo young video again and I am still in aw with the finished product!! You did such a great job! Also, since you don't like precooking the meat, you can skip that with beef and pork, since neither have to be well done, unless you like them well done! But with the shrimp, they cook so quickly, they look at the skillet and are done! LOL!! Thank you very much for watching and especially trying the chicken egg foo young!
And thank you again, Larry! We love your recipes!
Thank you
looks looks good man
+Yue Jin Thank you Yue!!
This looks soo delicious!
+Headchefmom Kendall Lawrence Thank you very much Paula!!!
I always liked the name Paula! Lol!
Love this. You are correct on carry out being on the greasy side.
+Paula Allen (Paula's Place) Yes indeed Paula, the omelettes and gravy are overly greasy and unappetizing!! Thank you very much for watching!
This is easy my way 👌🏽👌🏽
Looks good Larry!
+dakotabob10 Thank you Bob!
Looks delicious.. The 4 showing how 2 make the gravy as well.:-)
Shay A Use English please!
Appreciate the recipe. Not sure if my own attempts will be better than my local Chinese restaurant (I have a great one with fine people running it), but all the same I do like to have my own recipe to work on.
Hi, Larry. That Egg Foo Young looks fantastic. You really know how to make AWESOME Chinese dishes. You should definitely make Moo Goo Gai Pan, a great Chinese American classic. I have a question: what's the one Chinese dish you've had the most difficult time with? Please let me know. Have an awesome weekend, Larry. :)
+Byron Chandler Great suggestion Byron, I love moo goo gai pan and have been wanting to do a video!! Hopefully I can get it done soon! Thanks for watching!
+TheWolfePit Yas!
It looks good. It looks like a big omlette
Wasnhungry for this but did not want take out....Thank you!!!
This looks SO good!!! There is only me, so, can these be frozen???
This can also be made low carb. (Replace peas and carrots with some scallions. Replace corn starch with Xathum Gum for the gravy.) Yum
Hi Tory, yes I've been wanting to try xanthum gum for a while and will do it soon.
The 1/4 cup each of peas (3.5 net carbs) and carrots (2.1 net carbs) divided by 4 servings comes out to be 1.4 net carbs from the peas and carrots. I like the idea of additional scallions too, I love them!! Thanks for watching!
Larry
Looks delicious :-)
+Spoon Fork Heart Thank you Siri!!
Thank my dad's favorite will try for my bday 6/20/17 it's my 54th. Thanks!
Hope you enjoy!!! Happy Birthday!
Yum!
I've never had this, but I'm sure it's good cause it's like an omelette, or is an omelette lol. How the hell do they deep fry this? Just pour the egg mixture into a deep fryer? Wild! Looks great Wolfe and the silky gravy is mighty fine looking, too! TFS & have a great weekend! :D
My mom made this dish, its so yummy!
Thanks glad you enjoyed! Hi Mom!!
I made this from memory watching your video and I was like why didnt Larry have these issues. I printed the recipe and followed it the second time, Muy better.
You're like me Don......'I read the directions AFTER the fact'! lol
Recipe has to be good if both Grandma Cheap Cheap and Noreen's Kitchen approve! Recipe downloaded and slipped into the weekly rotation box!
Are the veggies precooked ?
This looks good! Never made this myself but order it without gravy....I dont like it made with half cooked veggies or raw veggies...the places I order from dont really cook the onions or the veggjes
Thank you so much Larry :-) We don't eat shell fish but I'm going to do this using chicken. What can I use in place of the oyster sauce, more soy? Thanks in advance of you answer my question :-) Have a Great Day!
+Skaismith Living Narcissist Free You can use a little more soy along with a little Hoisin sauce. Or they make a vegetarian oyster sauce that is basically the same, just without oysters. Thank you for watching, hope you enjoy!!
Larry
***** Thanks and keeps up with the great videos :-)
Have everything but bean sprouts are they that necessary?
I love egg foo yung. I love your recipe which I shall try this weekend and enjoy. Thank you. Unfortunately, according to Chinese foodies on UA-cam egg foo yung is an American Chinese food and is not found in China. That's a good enough excuse to stay right here.
+Colin Hirons From the way I understand it is, fu yung or egg foo young is an authentic Chinese dish, it's the gravy that is served with it here in America that is not authentic. I'm like you, I love it so I don't care either way! LOL Thanks for watching!
Larry
Tip: Try putting peanut butter and butter into the sauce.
Although I don't know exactly how to make it, I've always seen my parents use these two ingredients with a few others, just don't know what they are.
+Anne Liu Hmmm peanut butter and butter....I love both and it sounds interesting! I'll give it a try next time!! I always like experimenting with new things!! Thank you for watching Anne!
Is this food wishes? Or are you realated? Thx for the recepi making this tonite with some fried rice and wontons!
Doesn’t something else go in egg foo you g. I thought it was more of a batter consistency?
But....could I substitute the soy sauce for worchester sauce?
How many calories before the sauce?
Looks great!!!! I need oyster sauce stat!!
+Teresa Santos LOL!! Buy two bottles so you don't run out!! Thank you Teresa!
Larry, if you add a bit of corn starch to the eggs, they'll end up creamier and fluffier in the end.
+AWDYDOOD Yeah I've seen that done before and I will give it a try next time. But right now I'm on this low carb kick, trying to shed some lbs before summer and the cornstarch in the gravy was enough this time!! LOL Thanks for watching!
i dont have a printer can u POST INGREDIENTS N AMTS... PLEASE. 🤗
Larry, can crayfish be used as an acceptable substitute for this, and other dishes normally requiring shrimp? Thanks.
+Jaybird196 Absolutely Jay!! Please let me know how you like it!!
+TheWolfePit Awesome :) ! I'd been curious about that, as there are many shrimp dishes, but I cannot always afford shrimp, BUT a crayfish stocked river is very close to my home. Thanks, Larry!
Ain’t nothing better then a big plate of pork egg foo young. 🤤
I love egg foo young, one of my faves too, but did you know that Asians don't eat it? One of those Americanized dishes. I have recently tried canned bean sprouts too. Was so afraid, but they are actually pretty crisp, still just can't overheat them. Nice share Larry.
+DirtyDirtFarm Homestead Actually, at least the way I understand it and I could be wrong....I've been wrong ONCE.......but Chinese do eat egg foo young, it's just made differently and not served with gravy. But yes, this is just another American bastardized Chinese recipe that we all know as 'Chinese Food'. LOL I too was surprised with the canned bean sprouts.....I thought they would be mush, but they worked well and tasted fine. I'd use them again if I can't find fresh! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Awwwwwww yeahhhhh
I love Egg Foo Young, I almost always order it when order out, but I don't care for the gravy, I like the other sauce I don't know what's in it but soy sauce and maybe teriyaki sauce. Do you know what the sauce I'm talking about. Please explain the ingredients in it. Thank you Larry. ☺
+Alisa Wooten Yes, Alisa the gravy in Chinese restaurants is gross....fatty and over thickened with cornstarch. Umm....it sounds like you maybe getting a 'brown sauce' with it....is it a little pungent, salty and slightly sweet? Let me know and I'll see if I can pinpoint what you're looking for.
Yes Larry, you nailed it. That pungent, salty and slightly sweet is what I was talking about. So do you know what its called. .Thanks Larry.
Li💯
why didn't you add sugar or teriyaki to the sauce
3:20
Better for you? Certainly.
Tastes better than when it’s essentially deep fried?
I beg too differ... But Different strokes for different folks.
I love egg foo youg. Thanks but truth spoken this is an omelette foo young. Its has to be thick truly fried and with more bean sprouts. Healthy is still possible I will be omitting soy and oyster sauce.
This and Shrimp Broccoli are my favorites . However, Can I make EggFooYoung without the eggs? LOL
I'm vegan
The retailers' perception of shrimp size seems to have drifted in recent years. Jumbo is more like large, large is on the small side of medium, and medium are nearly microscopic. It's ridikilus.
And I just did an omelet for supper tonight... sigh... and I could've done egg foo young instead, if I'd watched this video first. Oh well, at least it was a good omelet. LOL
+Anonymoose Yeah, especially the shrimp from China, Indonesia and Thailand....not that I buy those, but I see them and they're no where near the size advertised. Shrimp are sized by how many shrimp per pound (I am sure you know this, just making a theory so stick with me), and all of the frozen shrimp have an ice coating around them to bump up the weight and prevent freezer burn. So if it usually takes 25 shrimp to hit a lb, which would be considered large I suppose, then 17-18 ice coated shrimp will hit a pound due to the weight from the ice. Therefore the size discrepancy AND you're paying for something you're not getting and a lot of water. JUST like most of our pork and chicken in the U.S. Thanks for watching John!
Egg foo young is so expensive nowadays unless you buy the lunch specials and even the lunch specials are getting expensive too and fattening I gain 3 or 4 pounds eating this meal lol
So, to just basically boil it down. Egg Foo Young, is just a Chinese version of a regular omelette I make at home.
Why did you make such a large amount? How big is your family, anyway? I'll bet most people would prefer a recipe for maybe two servings.
