    *Larry being a native New Yorker I worked the mid night shift there was nothing better then stopping by my neighborhood Bronx 24 hour Chinese take out and ordering my egg foo young breakfast, thumbs up brother!*

    OOOOHHHH! Egg Foo Young is one of my very favorite dishes! It is the very first Chinese food I ever ate when a friends mom took us to my very first Chinese restaurant. It was the most exotic thing I could have ever imagined eating. Now that I am an adult and I eat it, it takes me back to that little restaurant with the red draperies and tiny tables and the first time I ever drank jasmine tea out of a tiny cup with no handle. LOL! Looks amazing Larry. I have never made it myself but I will surely try now. Looks great! Thanks for sharing!

      +Noreen's Kitchen Noreen, wasn't it MUCH different and A LOT of fun going out to eat in general, but especially Chinese restaurants when we were kids? I'm assuming you and I are close in age, so we grew up in the same era. I, like you thought Chinese places were a special place for special people with the same red drapes you mentioned!! My father would order the same three things every time, egg foo young, chicken chow mein and shrimp with lobster sauce!! I was able to order sweet and sour pork one time and thought I was a King!! LOL Now today, going out to eat is no different than brushing our teeth in the morning, it's routine for a lot of people! Thank you very much for watching!!

      I loved reading your little story! It was a big deal for us to go out to eat at the Chinese restaurant when I was little. I remember they had a huge koi pond with sculpted mountains and a waterfall. I think I commented something like this on another one of Larry's videos, but my dad (who was also named Larry) would order the same thing every time, too! I didn't even know there were other types of Chinese foods till I got much older haha. Aww thanks for the good memories!

    Subscribed because of DT, but your egg foo young recipe is pretty good. Not like what mom made, but good. Also, like the tag line at the end that it is healthier for you to make this at home, especially since it is relatively simple.

    Looks delicious. When I make my Egg Foo Young gravy I always add sugar to sweetened it, otherwise it is pretty much the same ingredients except the oyster sauce. I like my Chinese food on the sweet side for some reason. I need to order some oyster sauce because I can't find it around here. So it looks like I will continue to look for something better than what I make but haven't been able to so far. May just have to stick with what I make.

    Hay Larry, I got an idea for you to try... It's a St. Paul sandwich... Just take your egg foo young and make it into a sandwich.. 2 slices of white wonderbread, untoasted, then bottom gets lettuce, slices of tomato, then pickles then the patty, then top slice gets Mayo.. Try it, a St. Louis specialty, they are good.

  • @Juanelo1946
    @Juanelo1946 8 років тому +3

    Larry, this is very much like your very delicious, successful chicken egg foo yung of a couple of years ago (which I made recently) but even EASIER because I won't have to precook the protein! Also I noticed that you didn't coat and marinate the shrimp with cornstarch as you did the chicken. That's great for me, because it means fewer carbs! Lastly, this recipe is half of your chicken recipe which is perfect for two people like Lulu and me. Thanks so much for sharing another fantastic recipe my friend!

    • @TheWolfePit
      @TheWolfePit  8 років тому

      +Juanelo1946 Yep, I halved the recipe because it was just my daughter and I eating it this time! I just went back and watched your egg foo young video again and I am still in aw with the finished product!! You did such a great job! Also, since you don't like precooking the meat, you can skip that with beef and pork, since neither have to be well done, unless you like them well done! But with the shrimp, they cook so quickly, they look at the skillet and are done! LOL!! Thank you very much for watching and especially trying the chicken egg foo young!

      Hi Tory, yes I've been wanting to try xanthum gum for a while and will do it soon.
      The 1/4 cup each of peas (3.5 net carbs) and carrots (2.1 net carbs) divided by 4 servings comes out to be 1.4 net carbs from the peas and carrots. I like the idea of additional scallions too, I love them!! Thanks for watching!

      +Colin Hirons From the way I understand it is, fu yung or egg foo young is an authentic Chinese dish, it's the gravy that is served with it here in America that is not authentic. I'm like you, I love it so I don't care either way! LOL Thanks for watching!

    Tip: Try putting peanut butter and butter into the sauce.
    Although I don't know exactly how to make it, I've always seen my parents use these two ingredients with a few others, just don't know what they are.

    Larry, if you add a bit of corn starch to the eggs, they'll end up creamier and fluffier in the end.

      +AWDYDOOD Yeah I've seen that done before and I will give it a try next time. But right now I'm on this low carb kick, trying to shed some lbs before summer and the cornstarch in the gravy was enough this time!! LOL Thanks for watching!

    Larry, can crayfish be used as an acceptable substitute for this, and other dishes normally requiring shrimp? Thanks.

      +TheWolfePit Awesome :) ! I'd been curious about that, as there are many shrimp dishes, but I cannot always afford shrimp, BUT a crayfish stocked river is very close to my home. Thanks, Larry!

    I love egg foo young, one of my faves too, but did you know that Asians don't eat it? One of those Americanized dishes. I have recently tried canned bean sprouts too. Was so afraid, but they are actually pretty crisp, still just can't overheat them. Nice share Larry.

    • @TheWolfePit

      +DirtyDirtFarm Homestead Actually, at least the way I understand it and I could be wrong....I've been wrong ONCE.......but Chinese do eat egg foo young, it's just made differently and not served with gravy. But yes, this is just another American bastardized Chinese recipe that we all know as 'Chinese Food'. LOL I too was surprised with the canned bean sprouts.....I thought they would be mush, but they worked well and tasted fine. I'd use them again if I can't find fresh! Thank you for watching and commenting!

    I love Egg Foo Young, I almost always order it when order out, but I don't care for the gravy, I like the other sauce I don't know what's in it but soy sauce and maybe teriyaki sauce. Do you know what the sauce I'm talking about. Please explain the ingredients in it. Thank you Larry. ☺

      +Alisa Wooten Yes, Alisa the gravy in Chinese restaurants is gross....fatty and over thickened with cornstarch. Umm....it sounds like you maybe getting a 'brown sauce' with it....is it a little pungent, salty and slightly sweet? Let me know and I'll see if I can pinpoint what you're looking for.

      Yes Larry, you nailed it. That pungent, salty and slightly sweet is what I was talking about. So do you know what its called. .Thanks Larry.

    Better for you? Certainly.
    Tastes better than when it’s essentially deep fried?
    I beg too differ... But Different strokes for different folks.

    I love egg foo youg. Thanks but truth spoken this is an omelette foo young. Its has to be thick truly fried and with more bean sprouts. Healthy is still possible I will be omitting soy and oyster sauce.

    The retailers' perception of shrimp size seems to have drifted in recent years. Jumbo is more like large, large is on the small side of medium, and medium are nearly microscopic. It's ridikilus.
    And I just did an omelet for supper tonight... sigh... and I could've done egg foo young instead, if I'd watched this video first. Oh well, at least it was a good omelet. LOL

    • @TheWolfePit
      @TheWolfePit  8 років тому

      +Anonymoose Yeah, especially the shrimp from China, Indonesia and Thailand....not that I buy those, but I see them and they're no where near the size advertised. Shrimp are sized by how many shrimp per pound (I am sure you know this, just making a theory so stick with me), and all of the frozen shrimp have an ice coating around them to bump up the weight and prevent freezer burn. So if it usually takes 25 shrimp to hit a lb, which would be considered large I suppose, then 17-18 ice coated shrimp will hit a pound due to the weight from the ice. Therefore the size discrepancy AND you're paying for something you're not getting and a lot of water. JUST like most of our pork and chicken in the U.S. Thanks for watching John!

    Egg foo young is so expensive nowadays unless you buy the lunch specials and even the lunch specials are getting expensive too and fattening I gain 3 or 4 pounds eating this meal lol

    Why did you make such a large amount? How big is your family, anyway? I'll bet most people would prefer a recipe for maybe two servings.
