  • 2024.10.03 Cyberfraud, crypto and technology in the Mekong: Projections and shifting threats
The Mekong region -- in particular the Golden Triangle and Thailand’s border areas with Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar -- has emerged as a centre for illicit economic activity for the wider region in recent years, attracting major transnational criminal organisations, innovators and service providers as a base for operations.
The scale of criminal proceeds connected to the booming cyber-enabled fraud industry and regional drug trade alone is estimated to exceed $100 billion annually and continues to grow despite mounting law enforcement action throughout Southeast Asia. Against this backdrop, criminals have been quick to professionalize and integrate new technologies including generative AI, deepfakes and malware into their operations while opening up new underground markets and crypto solutions for their money laundering needs. Drawing these elements together, it is clear that the shifting criminal ecosystem is rapidly outpacing the capacity of governments to contain it.
Where and how have these technologies been integrated -- and who is benefiting? What are the security implications of these threats and what do they mean for the broader development of the Mekong, Southeast Asia and impact on regions beyond?
This panel brings together experts on transnational organized crime, cryptocurrency and technological innovation within the regional criminal ecosystem to discuss evolving challenges and threats and examine the outlook for coming years.
    Speakers include:
Benedikt Hofmann, deputy regional representative, UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Jessica Chuah, vice president, Crystal Intelligence.
John Wojcik, regional analyst, organized crime and threat monitoring, UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Jessada Burinsuchat, superintendent, cyber security unit, Royal Thai Police Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB).
Moderator: Gwen Robinson, FCCT past president.
This is not an FCCT-organized event.
