@@chuckblain2020 that's super cool thanks =] So you use it to lower and increase parts of an audio clip in arrangemanget view, as he showed in the video?
Brilliant tools! Color schemes was a gamechanger for me in Cubase and Ableton, and I've stuck to my scheme for years now. If you don't want to fork out for the plugin, a trick in Ableton is that (if you work with groups), you can right click a Group track, and select "Assign Track Color to Grouped Tracks and Clips" to quicky apply colors in your project. Although not as flexible as the Auto Track Colors device, it's a nice trick.
Absolutely!! Having those repeatable color schemes helps when you have to go back to old projects too! Most of these tools do fall into the convenience category…but damn they are so convenient right?! 😂 I’m all for saving clicks and seconds when you’re spending all day everyday in ableton!!
@@TheCosmicAcademy Yeah man, I'd say workflow improvements are the best way to make more and better music, and the best place to spend your GAS-money :D
There is this M4L device called "Master Pitch" by Kilihu. If you work with multiple MIDI clips and tend to switch between song keys during the mixing or whatever, it can help you faster transpose the whole set really quickly without pushing each midi clip by one semitone up or down. Basically its like putting transpose midi effect for each clip but easier. For me personally it has helped a lot since I like to switch between keys to find the one that perfectly fits the vibe of whole set. and iirc its free. Downside is that you still have to manually change pitch audio clips iirc. I might have missed something from manual/tutorial but Im sure only drum racks and midi clips were pitchable.
That’s sickkkk!!! Very useful! I think the auto gain device shown in the video does a very similar thing! I just didn’t show it because truthfully I haven’t been using it…and I’m not sure why 😂😂 I def should!!
@@TheCosmicAcademy Oh yeah, I just googled that device and yeah there is one for transposing as well. I still think this Master Pitch can boost workflow faster but I might combine it with that gain device for audio clips since Master Pitch can’t pitch those. Anyways, Thanks for showing these devices in the video!
Excellent suggestions! My favorites from this video (and I went and got them) are Auto Track Colors, Swiss Army Meter, and of course Clip Gain. All of them amazing. Even though Shortcut Buddy 3 is a great device, I prefer Live Enhancement Suite which provides a customizable context menu with any plugins you want to include, and it even has submenus. Live Enhancement Suite has many other features besides the context menu and it is free and open source. Mix Matcher is also a great device but I already own Metric AB from ADPTR so I have no need for it.
for EQ eight you just have to hit save to save it as a preset. you don't have to group it first. maybe this was an update. I just set mine up. It basically won't allow you to add any stock effect but it will allow any preset of a stock effect... if that makes sense. so just save a copy of your default presets and you're good to go!
@@TheCosmicAcademy im just getting into M4L, so no recommendations yet. Believe it or not, I've been using Ableton since version 5 but just recently bought the Suite version so M4L is all new to me.
You could also use Mix Matcher for mixing your own songs tracks/busses to each other. But a big con is currently the spectrum itself, it's hard to see/use. You can't expand it and interact/see which peaks are what frequencies like spectrum has. Also the spectrum updates a bit slow compared to other plugins
Holy shit man, these are crazy good! I've been such a fool to ignore max for live thinking its all programming or something haha, gonna jump on this asap. Great video, thank you for sharing!
thanks! glad you enjoyed it. to answer that question, its just an empty audio channel. because we want to see the spectrum of the reference but not hear it...you can route the output of the reference channel to a blank audio channel (which I just named "dead"). This will silence the reference track, but still show its frequencies on the mixmatcher device! now you can play your project, without hearing the reference track on top of it!
Derp, I have no idea how to get the "clip gain" (at least I found the site......) BTW, any chance it works with session view? It would be invaluable if so.
man, watching these makes me want to switch to Ableton from Logic. But I just don't want to learn yet another massive piece of software because I already know hundreds haha . how big of a difference is it to jump to Ableton from Logic?
I can totally relate to these feelings! I made the switch a few years ago (Logic to Ableton) and it's a little bumpy at the start, but within a month or two there was no looking back! It's frustrating at first because you want to immediately "make music" in Ableton, but you really cant until you learn the software first. I would recommend spending majority of your first few weeks just learning the layout, hotkeys, functionality, etc. Within a few weeks a lot of the familiarity will be there and you can go back to being creative. From a workflow, creativity, and efficiency perspective...i found ableton to be light years ahead. Visually however, not so pleasing! I'll take it though haha 👊
and one more thing! if you do make the switch, I highly recommend watching the "Sadowick" ableton walkthroughs. He has some playlists breaking down everything in ableton and its fantastic.
@@TheCosmicAcademy thanks Bro, I'll be checking out all your vids also. I watched some other vids on Max and it looks insane. I was actually in contact with the Cycles guy in the mid-late 90's when it was just being figured out and was into it for a while. even the earliest Max DSP stuff was insane. I have the Lite version of Ableton and already started fooling around with it. There are a few things that are weird but I'll give it a go for a few weeks and see how it feels.
Does anybody know if there is a Max for Live feature which would allow to automatically reproduce the changes I make in a specific clip inside the session view to the same-named clip inside the arrangement view ?
Hey guys. Is anyone else having problems with shortcut buddy? When I assign the keys to the tools and try to use them, nothing happens. Do any of you have a solution there? Thanks in advance
Try these steps...its such a weird way to set it up 😅 You first have to "Group" the plugin you want to shortcut into an audio effect rack. Then save that audio effect rack into your user library. Then drag that saved audio effect rack to the "insert effect" slot in Shortcut Buddy. Once its loaded on there, press "command + K" to set up hot-keys. Click the circle to the left of your plugin in shorcut buddy, then assign any key to it. That should work....Let me know! -Z
