Love this video! Funny, informative, and engaging. All of your content I've seen thus far is on par with that, so I'm your newest subscriber. Keep up the fantastic videos, and thank you!
First time I learned what a vasectomy was when my pet rabbit had one. Turns out rabbits are damn vicious when they go through puberty if they're not fixed. Strangely enough, my rabbit's procedure was on the same day as my dad's. I still remember both of them "recovering" that day in the living room: my dad in his recliner, the rabbit on the couch next to him.
Serious question: what is the recommended protocol now for annual prostate exams? I have had doctors doing this exam for every physical exam for about 30 years. But two or three years ago, I was given a new doctor by my clinic, and she started the exam, then before it got going, she said this exam was not considered useful anymore. She would do it only if I wanted it done. She would only do such an exam if I had indicators, such as night-time urination or bladder issues. I really felt as though she was grossed out by the idea by her tone of voice and behaviour. At age 67, should I be having prostate exams even though I feel and seem healthy?
This was fun to watch. I sure hope that your nails aren't long when doing a digital exam. And lastly, your man must be in good hands if and when he starts to develop pelvic plumbing problems.
I once heard a radio shock jock who asked several urologists to fax him a picture of their hand so that he could pick the smallest one. BTW A digital rectal exam SAVED MY LIFE. I had a low PSA but my doctor insisted on doing the rectal rxam. He found Cancer. Using radioactive seed implantation I was saved. No issues with bladder or srxual function and no Cancer for the last 6 years. I insist on the finger every time I go to him because the PSA is unreliable.
I saw on the news DRE was no longer recommended because of a study. I always wondered if the study was funded by the insurance companies because if the doctor found something they would get further costly tests done. Statistics showed didn't make a difference in death rates from prostate cancer. What about the folks who end up not getting the DRE and die from cancer because insurance company didn't want to pay.
Wow, you guys have so different PSA screening criteria compared to our country where we offer early PSA testing in men > 45 years of age with a family history of PCa and a life expectancy of > 10-15 years. I really believe this is the right approach in regard to overdiagnosis.
With family history you can absolutely screen below 55 years of age but there's no clear guidelines. Without risk factors screening begins at age 55. only because there is minimal data on young men.
@@RenaMalikMD Thanks for your answer, my point was that you screening patients >55 age is considered overdiagnosis in our country. Hopefully, it may be changing for you soon. Just saw Nejm published "Reconsidering Prostate Cancer Mortality - The Future of PSA Screening" this month.
Why after the Prostate Exam, the Doctor hands you a couple paper towels? For the $35-$50 Co-pay that must be paid, shouldn't the exam AT LEAST come with a quick "Professional Wipe"??
@@RenaMalikMD It seems like I must be strange because I think his question was absolutely on point and I'm sorry, but your answer just kind of skipped over the point I feel he was trying to make. He mentioned technology for prostate exams and your reply was that you couldn't see all types of cancer through blood tests, etc. I'm still with him. My problem isn't that it needs to be done, my problem is why is it necessary for the doctor to use their finger? As a urologist, you know that they have things like, oh, I don't know, cameras that can fit inside of the urethra during a cystoscopy. Sooo... why isn't there a tool that is that small that it can go in, take a look around, do a pressure test to see it is swollen and by how much, and do a texture scan that reads any area that should not be found on a prostate? I mean, you can have an extremely small tool do all of these things but with an umbrella inspired head (to make sure that something so small doesn't accidentally pierce the colon wall while doing it's job) so that you don't have to stick your finger up there. You just stick that small tube up there a little bit, open the umbrella style end, do the things you need to do, close the umbrella, and remove the device while the computer collates all of the technical and detailed information for you to review. Done. Small invasion of the body, no guy or gal sticking their "hand" up there (lol) to the embarrassment of all, and probably more detailed information than a person's finger. A tool is ok. I get what he means there. The finger shouldn't be necessary any more. But here we are, 21st century with computers that have more power in a case as thin as a flattened cardboard box that you can just toss into your pocket or bag and go than the super computers of 15 years ago. Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries. All that and we're still sticking fingers up people's behinds. smh
I don't really have sympathy for guys and prostate exams. I started getting regular pap tests in my 20's. Now it's every 3 years, but i get a pelvic exam every year. And it hurts.
You can tell doctor, to use tools inside of female patient cervix for pap smear will pick up cerval dysplasia and abnormal cells and HPV on cervix. Refused pelvic exam. Your body and can tell them to stop at anytime of pap smear. Past did they find anything while putting fingers in side of female patient cervix. No.
I've only had one prostate exam. I had been having a lot of loose bowl movements and went to the doctor to find out why. He had me pull my pants and underwear down and lay on the exam bed. Without telling me what he was doing he stuck his finger in and I screamed, loudly. I had no idea he was getting ready to do that (I was only 18). He diagnosed me with IBS and prescribed me some medicine. That was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. Needless to say I never went back to him. A few years later his license was revoked but I don't know why.
She said find a female urologist because our hands are smaller? Someone one give me a ring, buzz, or throw me a message if your urologist's hand is big. Please.
Honestly, I think the issue I see with people complaining about a digital Prostate exam comes from homophobia and how a “straight man” can’t get a physical exam without explaining their discomfort or they will be less of a “man.” I love Steve Harvey, he’s hilarious but it’s also ridiculous.
For some men, maybe, but most men do ok with it. Some women complain about vaginal exams, I believe its just discofort with being examined in a "private" area for the majority.
Rena Malik, M.D. absolutely, it is a privacy issue. I think when Steve Harvey jokes on TV about it, it can be an issue about how masculinity is perceived and how straight men “should” portray a sensitive or intimate interaction. I bet Steve is ok in a private office, but that does make good tv so he jokes about it being “right.”
No one ever leaves a urologist office with a smile on their face, NO ONE!
But the always one person that is except to the rule.
Romeo it is obvious you have never been to a urologist.
@@g1sokool669 that true what you said. Couple years from now i have to go to the office.
Well I hope everything comes on for you.
Can't imagine too many people leave smiling after a trip to the Colonoscopy Clinic!!

Speaking of "vasectomies," could you speak on the side effects of using E.D. meds, such as possible blindness, or have you already done that?
Vasectomy I had n was pleasant n had issues instead of going back to work in 3 days I was home for 3 wks. Plus it still hurts at times. 🤷🤦♂️
