When I installed my first network, netmask was not a case (we used casefull routing, but we didn't knew that back then). 1993 the netmask and (CIDR) came, and everything got more easy.
7:20 another way to think about it is 255 is 'full' and 0 is 'empty', you are specifying the amount of 'free space' in that 'slot' (octet). As we've specified 255 for the first 3 octets, there is no 'space' for that number to change as we've said that those 'slots' are full and it will be locked to those digits. Whereas for the final octet that we've specified as zero, we're saying that its 'empty' and the DHCP server can go ham and allocate what ever it likes in the 1-254 range. Obviously thats highly simplified and in reality its more nuanced than that, but it made it click in my head.

@7:32 The short explanation - The network portion of an i.p. address is just like the name of the street you live on and the host portion is just like the assigned house-number to the home you live in. OR Your home network is street in a world full of roads and your neighbors are the devices connected to that network. Thus, your devices have the same address, just different “house numbers”, in order to distinguish themselves from one another.

Also, if you have DHCP for a network, don’t use the entire range! 11-240 is a good rule of thumb for a /24, so you can always add devices with a fixed IP to the network later!
But 254 is correct for a /24 ip range. The zero is also an ip address. You have 256 possible IPs (0-255). And you need to subtract the broadcast and the network address, thats 256 minus 2 equals 254. The router/gateway is only required, if you want to leave your ip address range, so it is not a must have. However, like any other device, you will need to address it with an IP if added.

I essentially knew nothing about IP addresses until 15 mins ago. This was explained so clearly and succinctly. I was able to understand and remember almost everything said. That's saying something for me.
I was habing a dialema in understanding this. I knew about it but after watching the lectures repetitively and trying to understand. It took forever and I didn't remember it. I even wrote noyes down and still didn't understand it. What was the problem? The person I was watching, understand it in his own way, this youtuber helped us understand it in his way which I will say gives a far better understanding because analogies help to relative terms and perhaps is really underrated in University lectures where it's suppose to be "serious". But most lectures do not include analogies. Visualising and relating to someone, you can help them understand how it works, using terms they undersyand and comparing it and then explaining in computing term which made things easier to understand. Ngl, this video saved me. I'm able to remember clearly about the 1st few basics of comouter networking and I thank you so much NetworkChuck. Keep up the good work

Psst use a /23 subnet mask and you can have 512 IPs -2 of course.

There’s no need to be afraid to ask the pretty obvious questions, if your instructor mocks you for doing so then you don’t have a great teacher.

In school for cybersecurity so I watch a lot of videos like this to supplement my required reading, this is the most interesting and engaging one I've seen! You do such a good job keeping it fun and upbeat, I have seen so many that are detailed and explained well but are dry and can get really boring. But I really enjoy yours and you're funny, keep it up! I will definitely be watching more in the future.

As a person with adhd, with a teacher in school that cant learn me shit. Having this is a match made in heaven thank you alot.
I essentially knew nothing about IP addresses until 15 mins ago. This was explained so clearly and succinctly. I was able to understand and remember almost everything said. That's saying something for me.
I was habing a dialema in understanding this. I knew about it but after watching the lectures repetitively and trying to understand. It took forever and I didn't remember it. I even wrote noyes down and still didn't understand it. What was the problem?
The person I was watching, understand it in his own way, this youtuber helped us understand it in his way which I will say gives a far better understanding because analogies help to relative terms and perhaps is really underrated in University lectures where it's suppose to be "serious". But most lectures do not include analogies. Visualising and relating to someone, you can help them understand how it works, using terms they undersyand and comparing it and then explaining in computing term which made things easier to understand. Ngl, this video saved me. I'm able to remember clearly about the 1st few basics of comouter networking and I thank you so much NetworkChuck. Keep up the good work
