Tony has left us today. For those with ears open to new ways of shaping sound into music, he opened doors we never even knew existed. Working with him was intense, joyful, sometimes challenging, but in the end alway full of rewards. I will miss him very much.

those big, sweeping strokes are so painterly, they exist almost completely outside conventional drum technique/vocabulary, yet he still maintains the primal, percussive element. a true master

Bill Evans wanted Tony to join the trio, and Tony does appear with the trio on "The 1972 Ljubljana Concert" and has an amazing solo on "Nardis." His playing really inspired Bill, and it's too bad there isn't more of them together. If you search UA-cam you will also find a track of Bill performing "My Melancholy Baby" with Tony on drums, recorded at Ronnie Scott's Club.

It is hard to explain to non-drummers how super hard it is to play ergo think like Tony. After the fact it makes sense, but balancing all those sounds and rhythms and dynamics is a huge task... thank you VERY much for posting this!

amazing. this is what every musician should strive to do, push the boundaries. love the giant cowbell drags, great sound. all of the haters can die in a fire. if he was playing 32nd notes on a double bass the whole time you would be bowing down. challenge yourself!

I met Tony Oxley years ago when we opened a show for Bernie Taupin and he was on drums. What a nice man. While he was playing great, the music was "in the box", unlike this obviously "outside the box" piece he's playing.
This is absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing!

¡Deslumbrante !

My wife, from the other room: "Are you watching those demolition videos again?"
Me: "No Love, it's this really good drummer Tony Oxley"...
Wife: "Well thank God you doin't play like that"
Me: "Not yet, but I aspire to..."
    Wife: [Blank look on face]
That fluidity, grace and movement. I think my wife doesn't like the big cowbell...

Tony is a weaver of rhythms here.
But he can ceartainly play straight up jazz as well. His solo outings are quite good as I'm sure you must know.
