He did not need to come in Russel did because there was no way he was catching anyone on the hards he was on the only reason to bring Hamilton in is to ensure track position for Russel over Hamilton. As usual Lewis kills it in practice, then come qualifying hes nowhere near Russell. Then he finds out his tyres were kept in the tyre blankets below 2 to 3 degrees below temperature in qualifying. Come race day they slap on the hards with 10 laps to go with alread having the data of how Russell was struggling on the hards. You dont need someone to tell you something is going on, you can see it with your own eyes happening in real time.

General point about Mercedes. What we saw, and were reminded of this past weekend, is that it’s not enough to have the quickest car, team has to know how to win, and be ready to win. Mercedes needs another race weekend or two to relearn.

I honestly think people are being hard on George narrative that he seems to make mistakes under pressure. Amazing how the drivers see these "mistakes " differently from normal humans sitting on our couch watching. Even Max and Lando stood up for him. They all made mistakes. In both his Brazil wins he fought Max for the sprint and Lewis last 10 laps of the GP. I don't think it was pressure this time, but that realization and feeling that the car was capable of more and there was a chance to capitalize and maximize. I mean you saw how he went after Oscar and Lewis. That was a racer who had fire 🔥 in him. One more lap, he would have gotten Lando for p2. Someone else would have folded and feel sorry for themselves. I don't think it's pressure, maybe over eager and greed sometimes. Also, he doesn't get too many opportunities to fight in the front with these Merc cars. He is driving like he did in Williams having to fight for every point and maximize the car week in and week out. Last season, they needed to maximize points so that when the car is competitive they can capitalize. That's why they got P2. Imagine that without even a win that season.

Truth be said these mistakes are minor. You pay for such a small mistake like running wide slightly off line or an oversteer moment, you lose a position. Problem is we have cars within hundredths of a second as was Piastri, George, Lando and Max. The conditions were treacherous to add to the difficulty. These mistakes have always been happening just they cost nothing in those days. In the past 2014-2015 Hamilton's little slide in qualifying that cost him 0.2 in the final corner would still have been good for 2nd on the grid with the car advantage. In those days its a little slide now its the difference from a front row and fourth row. Alonso's slow pit stop was enough to cost a position. These RBR sub 2 sec pit stops were great to see in 2021-2023 but we never really got to see the difference they are making to a race when Max had time in hand to the chasing driver. Now with cars this close any team that goes over 3 sec pitstop will now be considered as a mistake by the team.

P1 was out of reach for Mercedes when Max passed George (I think that btw would have happened irrespective of errors made). Max makes zero errors that you can capitalize on. Lando makes them and thus P2 and P4 would have been possible. Lewis was probably too far back on the grid to get much better than P4. The win was definitely not up there for him. So maybe, just maybe P2/P3, but P2/P4 would have been reasonable. It ends up as P3/P4 which is already a big step forward from what it was. Dunno if Mercedes completely fixed their woes, but we'll see Spain and Silverstone soon enough. If it goes well there you can start saying Mercedes entered the chat.

The Mercedes was not the fatest car. Russell and Verstappen pulled away 10 seconds from Norris when it was wet, and when it was dry Norris passed them easily. Both Mclarens were gaining on them both. Mercedes hasn't suddenly made the best car. Redbull have had the fastest car for 3 years and McLaren have had the fastest car for 3 races. Both George and Lewis made mistakes but that happens when you are pushing a car that isnt quite yet up there. Mercs always are better on green tracks. Cannot see why people fail to see this.
Mercedes had the fastest car period. Everyone made more than one mistake in that race including Max, but Russell was and is always inferior compared to the leaders. He was in front twice.
However, dont forget both Mercedes set the fastest times in Q2, both under 1:11, so there is something interesting there. Verstappen can't do this time, so we have to wait to confirm.

Then Max immediately drops to 0 and that is all the difference. If Mercedes had the fastest car (seemed so in qualy), then it definitely wasn't to an extent to just overtake Max and be done with it. That means driver prowess comes into play and on that part as you correctly identified, George has a thing or 2 to learn.

WTF???). And how is it even possible that Hamilton didn't have a set of soft or medium tyres? Even a "scrubbed" set would have been good enough the final 11 laps on this track.
Perhaps winning a race that Red Bull probably shouldn't have won has more to do with it. Two Stroll level drivers and Red Bull would have been midfield. Start counting errors that any driver makes that the competition can capitalize on in the same lap. Max had none of those in Canada, which was to a large degree the answer why Max won.

So maybe, just maybe P2/P3, but P2/P4 would have been reasonable. It ends up as P3/P4 which is already a big step forward from what it was. Dunno if Mercedes completely fixed their woes, but we'll see Spain and Silverstone soon enough. If it goes well there you can start saying Mercedes entered the chat.

Some people were wondering why Lewis went to hard tires and he only had one fresh set of mediums that he already used.
The Mercedes was not the fatest car. Russell and Verstappen pulled away 10 seconds from Norris when it was wet, and when it was dry Norris passed them easily. Both Mclarens were gaining on them both.
Mercedes hasn't suddenly made the best car. Redbull have had the fastest car for 3 years and McLaren have had the fastest car for 3 races.
Both George and Lewis made mistakes but that happens when you are pushing a car that isnt quite yet up there. Mercs always are better on green tracks. Cannot see why people fail to see this.
Mercedes had the fastest car period. Everyone made more than one mistake in that race including Max, but Russell was and is always inferior compared to the leaders. He was in front twice.
However, dont forget both Mercedes set the fastest times in Q2, both under 1:11, so there is something interesting there. Verstappen can't do this time, so we have to wait to confirm.
@@Shaka-Spear Max made mistakes like everyone else, but you're better of counting mistakes that your competition can capitalize on in the same lap. Then Max immediately drops to 0 and that is all the difference. If Mercedes had the fastest car (seemed so in qualy), then it definitely wasn't to an extent to just overtake Max and be done with it. That means driver prowess comes into play and on that part as you correctly identified, George has a thing or 2 to learn.

It remains to be seen whether this wasn't just the proverbial swallow that doesn't make a summer but in Montreal the Mercedes was arguably the fastest car, however, George Russell is certainly not the guy to lead Mercedes into a "brighter future"... but hey, throwing away "golden opportunities" in such embarrassing fashion doesn't seem to bother his boss much ("We mustn't be too greedy." WTF???).
And how is it even possible that Hamilton didn't have a set of soft or medium tyres? Even a "scrubbed" set would have been good enough the final 11 laps on this track.

Checo being in the other car is allowing Max to look like a god. Even Yuki would be doing a much better job.
Perhaps winning a race that Red Bull probably shouldn't have won has more to do with it. Two Stroll level drivers and Red Bull would have been midfield. Start counting errors that any driver makes that the competition can capitalize on in the same lap. Max had none of those in Canada, which was to a large degree the answer why Max won.
I don’t think George threw a win away. Lando was the fastest guy in Canada and George was never beating Max. Red Bull was the third fastest car though
Lando was the fastest before the SC deployment, when he was well up the road. After that particular SC, Max was the fastest.
I wonder what would've been the result if Sergeant wasn't racing in F1.
