I loved the first book, though I had to put it up and come back to it later because of the starting pacing. The same thing is happening for me right now in the second book, but I’m definitely going to get through the first three before the next comes out
I am currently trying to make my way through it. So far, i'm not really invested in the characters. Caldo and Galdo seem like the best most interesting, and they get almost no screentime. Plus, both the women in the series (all two of them) are spoken about -- it is hinted that they exist -- but we don't really get to see them. Of course, i'm only about halfway through the book. I have to finish it though, i have to find out how the bastards resolve things with the Grey King.
i had a hard time getting into the first one and almost put it down several times. things took a complete turn about 150/200 pages in and now it's one of my favorite series of all time. it still haunts me how close i was to just giving up on it haha

I love Locke and Jean! I can't wait to find out more about Locke's history. I found it hard to believe that The Lies of Locke Lamora was Lynch's first novel. Everyone should read it and I must say that I was happy to find out that other people like it just as much as I do!

I didnt like the 2nd and 3rd book as much, but I think it was partially my expectations of it were not what they should have been. Cant wait for the Thorn of Emberlain to come out!

I started reading after you recommended this series in one of your vids. I’m nearly finished the first and it’s amazing so you have my thanks for talking about it.
Definitely had a slower start than I expected. Took me about halfway through the book to start caring about Locke or Jean. Cared more about Bug to be honest, but after the first half... I’m hooked, utterly enthralled. About 1/3 left to go!
Alright I finally got around to the Gentlemen Bastards series and wow. I have been missing out for so long. Nobody can swear quiet like Scott Lynch. The narrator also killed it.
Side point of advice: so far the first book here has made an excellent palette cleanser for me after finishing the first Mistborn trilogy. Something atmospheric enough for me to enjoy greatly without being so dense I have to focus aggressively on the little mysteries and what not. Not to mention the levity helps me to relax a bit more.
Thanks to you vehemently advertising it at almost every chance you can, the first book was added to the 16 books I already bought on my last trip to York. The additonal weight I had to carry up the 4th floor better be worth it! Looking forward to read it very much!
I read The Lies of Locke Lamora a few weeks ago. It was one of my favorite reads so far. It was fun, it was interesting, it was gut wrenching, it was amazing.
These books are my heart. I picked of The Lies of Locke Lamora after hearing that it was about thieves. Thieves doing thief things is pretty much a guaranteed win of a trope for my reading tastes, as I always love reading about it. What I wasn't prepared for was the FEELS trip I was about to go on. The heists are infinitely clever and wonderful, of course, but I feel in love with the atmosphere, the gritty danger, and my dear, dear Locke and Jean. I rave about these books to anyone that will listen to me, hoping more people read them. I devoured the whole series in under two weeks because I simply could not put them down. I cannot wait for the next installment.
you definitely have this series move up on my TBR. this year i got back into reading, but the last few months i realized i love fantasy! Also, You also seem hilarious and fun...kinda like my personality. LOL Thanks for this video!

I personally don't care about spoilers and know the the general plot already but the writing is so good that it still super suspenseful seeing how it plays out. Brilliant series, Scott Lynch is one of my favorites. Hes not building A WORLD, so to speak, hes building THEIR world and we discover more and more as they travel through it and that approach is both beautiful and very realistic in a way.
Just finished the first book & have started the second. As stated in the video, full of dark humor & well-written camaraderie. There were, indeed, some scenes where I laughed out loud...there were also a couple of scenes that made me physically flinch because of their brutality. Two thumbs up.
I loved the books, its probably one of the best characters in fantasy I've read in a long time. I am normally more drawn into world building and strong story series, but Daniel is correct - the characters and their 'bro-mance' is what really reels you in. The flash backs seem to be a strong suit for Lynch, and you'll see him use this throughout the series. Also if you have a love of Renaissance/Venetian type backdrops, you'll love this. Not to lay it on too thick, but this was also my #2 audio book in my Audible library and the voicing is spot on. Buy both! I wish Scott Lynch well and await more of his works.
Ive been looking online to find what new books i wanna get to read, and usually ill come across some deadpan review, but this, this is how you sell a book
Ok so I have just finished Red Sister by Mark Lawrence yesterday. Amazing fun fantasy series by the way. So literally was stuck on what to read next... I just could not decide at all. Was between The Blade Itself, The Dragon Reborn and The Lies of Locke Lamora. You have convinced me good sir. Gonna start my Gentlemen Bastards journey tonight :)
Wonderful video as usual! And about an absolutely amazing modern fantasy series no less. Read meow, and get through that first hump. You will not regret it. For those who don't always have the time for physical reading, I have found the first installment of the series to be ESPECIALLY awesome as an audiobook. The narration is absolutely top notch, and it is clear that the narrator has an in depth knowledge of the story based on his tone and inflection throughout.
I've seen the books and have played with the idea of buying them but I have so many series I'm into I wasn't sure I wanted to start another. After watching this video though I'll definitely check it out.
I appreciate your recommendation on The First Law series, I’m on book 2 and am enjoying it more than the 1st book. Definitely going to check this one out soon
It's on my TBR because you mention it often but I'm still so new to fantasy that I don't think I can justify bumping it up over things like The Black Company, Farseer trilogy, or the Earthsea cycle
My absolute favorite book characters I’ve read in the last few years. Not necessarily the best books, though I really enjoy them, Locke and Jean are the most fun and most interesting to follow.
You sold me when you said it’s about thieves, murderers, and their relationship. I’m all for action when it’s done right and when it moves the plot, but I love dialogue and character growth much more than all that. This seems like a series for me. Thanks for the recommendation!
You should read the two Hawk & Fisher collections, they tread very similar waters (grimy criminal underbelly of a sprawling fantasy city). They probably aren't as well known because they are from the late 80s, but the writing is superb and reading Locke Lamora often felt like a longer Hawk & Fisher tale.
I usually like royalty crap with princess and princess, kings queens and all that stuff but I decided to give this a go. I finished the trilogy last week on audible and I honestly feel so lost now. The book was amazing. Probably the best dialogue I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening too and it was funny. I highly reccomend it.

Read it because of you. I went like 6 months ago to the US to visit friends, bought Lies, then bought the other 2, I ate the books in less than a month. Great characters and setting to emphathize even thoughit might a seem dire and dark place.
I started listening to the audiobook this week, and I’m not connecting that much, but I do loooove the writing of it. So I’ll start actually reading it as soon as exam season leaves me. Specially after this video😉
Hi Daniel, I agree with you on everything you said about these books, which I read after a 1-year read of The Wheel of Time. The only thing that annoys me is that Book 4 is still not out.
Love these books, been waiting for the 4th for ages! I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant if you haven't already covered them? My favourite series of all time 👍
Michael Page narrates the audiobook and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Although I love Locke and Jean, Father Chains is my all time favorite simply because of his dialogue.
Took a look at your Inheritance Cycle reviews and loved them. Decided to go through the rest of your uploads and boy, does it seem as though your channel was tailor-made for what I was looking for! Also, I'm reading Dust of Dreams right now (Malazan Book 9). What's your opinion of trying a re-read as against tackling Erikson's other books.
I finally finished the third book. The audio book was very helpful because English isn't my first language, and Gentlemen Bastards isn't easy to read for non English reader.
I'm about to start book 3. first book was incredible... locke vs the bondsmagi was EPIC. The second book was pretty good but I almost got lost keeping the three sets of characters. The ending was circular but good, and totally Locke. Excited to start book 3...
What are your thoughts on The Gentlemen Bastards ?

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant if you haven't already covered them? My favourite series of all time 👍
I am listening to book three on Audible. It is a fantastic series with some of the best and amusing dialog I have seen in a book series.
Michael Page narrates the audiobook and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Although I love Locke and Jean, Father Chains is my all time favorite simply because of his dialogue.
Me, who had read and loved it already: This seems like a good way to spend my time.
And it was.
"You bow and scrape and mind your 'Sirs' and 'Madame's'"
"Nice bird, arsehole,"
Great video! I loved the first book so much but have yet to pick up Red Seas Under Red Skies. I’ll be changing that soon.
I thanks for the recomendation, really liked those but I hope those guys catch a break sometime soon
Just finished this book today. Amazing.
