The "Buddha statue" you saw on Bokor Mountain isn't a statue of Buddha, Chai... that's a statue of a female saint known as "Yeay Mao" (Yeay means grandma in Khmer) that's why the statue looks very different from the Buddha statues you've seen before. The locals believe she's a spirit who takes care of travellers and adventurers and interestingly enough, there's a shrine dedicated to her on every main national road that leads to the coastal provinces, but not others region (and I don't know why either lol). Also, you might have already left Kampot, but for those who wish to visit Kampot and experience the local life, I would suggest visiting and spending a night at Kampong Samaki community or Trapaeng Sangke community. They're fishing communities that also provide eco-tourism services and homestay. Everything there is extremely affordable even for us locals and you will help people in the community to thrive and contribute to the protection of mangrove forest in their area. You can plant mangrove, go kayaking, fishing, and join the villagers digging for clams or crabbing at low tide... it's a very peaceful place to take a step back and enjoy nature and simple life.
Sending love from Cambodian people hope you enjoy your trip with many thing to do here i feel so happy when i saw you enjoy your trip with happiness feeling ❤️
Kep Town is also a stone throw away with fresh amazing seafood market and hiking trails at national Park over the hills with an ocean view. Happy travels 🎉
Good one Chai ... So many people just hit Siam Reap or Phonm Penh and never see more of Cambodia ... I skipped by this place a few times over the years and never stopped ... Will check out next time ... Battambong in the NW is also very interesting ...
Wow Kompot has changed so much. My last visit was back in 2016. Thank you for sharing so much of modern 🇰🇭 Cambodia and the fact that you’ve been there prior to the Chinese developer to witness what Cambodia has to offer to the world travelers.
Always better with Ilona for you, I bet. It is nice to see her in more videos. And nice for you to have someone to dialogue with. I love doing videos with my partner. So much more fun than alone. At least for me. No one knows watching vlogs how lonely it is a vlogger to be in a foreign city, eating alone, talking to his camera. And all the looks you get while doing it, haha. So I'm glad for you that you have Ilona there. And as always, you are smooth as glass in your presentation and interviews!
Cool video. We stayed at a hotel on Bokor Mountain (6:21 mark) and I thought for sure the hotel was closed, it looked abandoned, and no one was there, but it was open and so nice.
We got to spend a night in that hotel some years ago, granted it was unfinished at the time and we pitched our tents in what I presume would become the lobby. Nothing says great night's sleep than cold weather, strong winds rattling your fragile tent, and an uneven concrete floor as a bed. A guard chased us out in the morning 😅.
Hello Chai, Have been recently watching several of your travel videos which are very awsome. I will be go to Cambodia in november this year, its already decided that after Phnom Phen next destination will be Kampot, i have two questions. 1. How are the beaches in Kampot? 2. Best way to travel to Koh Rong (planned as my next destination after Kampot) from Kampot? Best regards
Ey mate, thanks! I don’t know about the beaches tbh with you. I haven’t heard anyone about it so a doubt they’re worth visiting. Koh rong is so beautiful 😍, I’d say by train than taxi, than ferry 😁
just curious, do u hv a ghost camera? it didnt look like u were taking selfies most of the time. i even saw both hands of urs (on the tuk tuk the day u arrived in phnompenh).
The Budha statue you mentioned is definitely not of the Budha. It is actually the statue of Grandma Moa whom people believe in her who is in charge of taking care of the sea.
Oh, and that subtitle issue I was telling you about is happening again, dark grey text in black background that is very had to read. I took a screenshot this time and maybe I can DM it to you on IG. I can't remember if it permits that. But anyway, I'm on a Mac laptop, on the YT website, using Chrome. If me telling you is not helping just let me know and I won't bring it up again.
Haha nice fun fact but I had to fact check it in sorry 🤭 Afghanistan has a building on it too 🤓 thanks again for watching and interacting with us though ❤️❤️
Your Bokor Hill trip --- was just begging for easy, but DRAMATIC drone shots. BECOME A DRONE-MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER --- like Paddy Doyle, Itchy Boots, Ben Brown, Lost le Blanc, Kristian Hansen, and Indigo Traveller --- just to name a few fellow vloggers. Your gift of gab is superior to theirs --- but these drone experts --- drown you out of viewers --- because of their Magic Bird drone expertise. Get the drone going --- and fly to 100k subscribers. Sorry you skipped Koh Rong and Kep. This is creative feedback, not just grumpy criticism --- because I value and enjoy your channel so much.
Thanks for your feedback ;) I'll try to get more drone shots in. It was raining a lot that day so unfortunately I couldn't make more shots :) I appreciate your comment though. Thanks for watching
Don’t know how anyone can get excited about pepper. I guess it’s interesting to go to a pepper farm, but you spent far too long talking about it. I’ll be in Kampot in 10 days
Well, you would be surprised to see how much you can learn about agriculture when visiting the best pepper farm in Kampot "La Plantation", very interesting, all organic... And free culture.
To be honest I love watching these videos about Southeast Asia but it's always amazing that no one will ever say anything bad about the countries in general. Cambodia has a serious drug problem especially among the youth. So much so it made the Phnom Penh Times when I was there 4 years ago. It's the elephant in the room no one will mention. And every city in Cambodia is rife with young male homosexual junkies who hang out everywhere on the streets at night and scare away all the families, women, couples and children. Literally there's like no regular people who walk around at night unless they're in a well lit and heavily populated area. Compare that to 8 years ago when you'd see regular people out at all hours and the atmosphere was non-threatening. Families, young couples, single women and children were out late because it was safe almost anywhere. There was a convenience store near my hotel in Phnom Penh where a bunch of young male homosexual methheads would hang out all night with blazing red eyes giving every male who walked in "the eye" and it was just normal in Cambodia. Even during the day at the largest shopping mall in Phnom Penh the men's public toilet had literally been turned into a gay brothel with young guys (again with blazing red eyes like a demon) hanging around the sink area giving guys "the eye" and you could see people going in and out of toilet stalls like a revolving door two at a time like it was completely normal. I complained to security because children and families were using the bathroom too and security didn't seem to care or couldn't do anything about it. The young male homosexual drug addicts seem to have carte blanche to do whatever they want in Cambodia and Thailand today and I won't be back after that spectacle.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Obviously it’s not always safe and great. I do wanna keep things real on this channel that’s why I made this episode: 🇰🇭| How to STAY OUT OF TROUBLE in Phnom Penh CAMBODIA? At the very least, FOLLOW THESE RULES… ua-cam.com/video/YpGR4F01n_0/v-deo.html

Best thing to do is rent a motorbike to visit Bokor, Kep, and the Pepper Farm.
KAMPOT has so many American and Canadian living on it and from what I heard is that they bought the house and live.
Have you been to sabay beach ? People say it's the best place to stay and have food in Kampot
I have not but I'd love to go on our next visit :) Thanks!
i love cambodia
Me too 😍

Haha it’s top secret
Hello brother ❤
Kampot paper is one of most famous paper in Cambodia.
Pepper.
From : Toronto
Thanks for watching and saying hello! 👋
I would like to Kom Pot😘
Lol Come Pot!
Is it clean in kampot?
It is in most places, yes. Though the riverbank was full of plastic, waste management of the city seems good.
The Budha statue you mentioned is definitely not of the Budha. It is actually the statue of Grandma Moa whom people believe in her who is in charge of taking care of the sea.
Thanks for the correction there 🙏
The hotel on top of bokor was renovated a few years ago. Opened for a while and now abandoned again. Asking silly money for a room.
Oh, and that subtitle issue I was telling you about is happening again, dark grey text in black background that is very had to read. I took a screenshot this time and maybe I can DM it to you on IG. Not a Buddha statue, It’s a Yeay Mao ( Grandma’s Name Mao ) statue face to see the ocean .
A beautiful statue 🙏 thanks for the correction 🏆
😮😮😮😮
I am vandy a tuktuk driver in kampot
Hi sir :)
That statue is not the Buddha statue, it’s a grandmother Mao, she is believed to protect the travelers who pass by. Peace.
Thanks for teaching 😊🙏❤️
@@Chai_Travel or Yeay Mao as pronounced by Khmer, and no problem bro. Thanks for doing vlog about Cambodia.
