  • (7 Jul 2016) Britain's Queen Elizabeth, and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Thursday attended an Order of the Thistle church service in Scotland's capital.
The royal couple, draped in ceremonial robes, were joined by Princess Anne and Prince William for the thanksgiving service at St Giles Cathedral.
Hundreds of wellwishers lined Edinburgh's Royal Mile to catch a glimpse of the party as they entered the cathedral to a trumpet fanfare.
The Order of the Thistle recognises men and women who have held public office or who have contributed in a significant way to Scottish life.
It is the highest honour in Scotland and the second highest in the UK, preceded only by the Order of the Garter.

With only 16 members (outside the Family) this may well be the most exclusive Order of Chilvary.

The order of the thistle 😀, for someone who is struggling with her mobility Queen Elizabeth didnt look like she was in any discomfort ,i know the page boy was holding the cloak but there had to be some weight on the gown she's wearing, not the wisest decision for someone with her mobility issues to wear , she didnt look like she was in any distress, i was surprised to say the least when i saw her walking with that heavy load on her shoulders ,hope she is ok

This is a service for the members of the Order of the Thistle, the highest honour that can be bestowed by the Scots (analogous to the better-known Order of the Garter for England, held at Windsor Castle). This annual service is also a Chapter, or official meeting, of its fellowship. The service commemorates the living and deceased Companions of the Order.
The robes are in the traditional style used by the members since medieval times.
The Queen is the Sovereign, or principal member, of the Order.

@@baraxor Or afraid of tugging her backwards. The robes are beautiful (what a fantastic green color) but the headgear is ludicrous. No doubt the components of the design stand for something, but they look like caricatures of royal headdresses. I was amazed at the spring in Prince Philip's step at age 94. So sad that he is no longer among us to support the Queen. Some of the children and grandchildren are, but, of course, it's not the same as your spouse of more than 70 years.

The Royal Family were the House of Hanover, until Victoria married and then they were theHouse of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.King George V changed the name to Windsor during WW 1 because of strong anti-German sentiment. Some members of the Royal family may use the name Mountbatten-Windsor. Mountbatten is another name changed because of anti-German feelings. Battenberg became its English translation, Mountbatten.
