Thank you, Jonny. I wanted to replace my 2018 Honda HRV battery and your advice was very useful. However, I found that using jumper cables as you suggested to save radio identity and preset data was just too cumbersome given the configuration of my battery terminal clamps in this Honda Model which was different than the model in the video. Fortunately, I found out by trial and error that in my 2018 HRV the Honda Link on board (as equipped) feature made it unnecessary to clamp on jumper clamps. After I used the rest of the methods you showed in the video, when I started up the HRV, the radio screen with Honda Link guided me thru two steps to self/auto reboot the radio, GPS and it's other options automatically ( i stumbled across this because my owners manual and materials provided at purchase 4 years ago did not include any radio ID/reboot info as my 2009 Honda Fit did and required). I make these comments just to perhaps assist others in changing their battery in a model such as mine. Thank you again for you very excellent and helpful video!
Thanks Jonny--I've got a 2018 Honda CRV that's getting close to needing a new battery and your Jumper Cable hack was genius...will definitely be trying to reproduce your method.
Hey man! Thank you so much for that brilliant tip! I had never seen that done before, I was worried about all the electronics and bells and whistles going crazy on me after changing the battery. I'm so glad I ran into your video. Nice job! Keep on keeping on...thanks again..
I have a question Johnny ,what battery model did you put on your 2017 CRV ,I was trying to see the type but the blurry in the video didn’t let me see the specifics ,thanks and great video as usual, right to the point no useless chat ! Love your videos
Honda does not recommend you use another power source like another vehicle battery , it may cause you to send the alternator into a charging made which could damage your electronics or blow fuses ..
As your car is not running when you change the battery the alternator is not charging anything at this time, The other battery you are using to keep memory is not being charged and will not hurt the car if you don't have the other car running. The little current your car will draw from the other car does not require the other car to be running during this time. For all your car knows it just sees the voltage as if the original battery is still there. It is perfectly OK. I have not read anything from Honda about not recommending this. Just member to keep your positive (Red) wiring insulated while installing the new battery until you are ready to connect the new battery. This is really the best way to save memory during the change. Yes, many people just let the system reset after changing battery, but some have reported problems with Lane assist, or some other sensors not resetting.
Good video, thanks. The battery on my 2017 Civic LX conked out last night (at 4 yrs and 60K miles) so I bought a new one at Costco and will install it tomorrow. Will there be memory loss in the Maintenance Minder while the battery is disconnected if I don't hook it up with cables to another battery?
Not sure about that. The computer may have a hardrive to save data. I would just write down mileage and maintenance minder percentage % just in case 👍🏻
@@JonnyDIY Just to let you know, it was fine. I hooked up jumper cables to the new battery while I was disconnecting the old battery but there were a few seconds a couple of times when the power was removed from the car. Some dashboard warning lights came on after the job was done and stayed on for a while but the second time I started the car they were gone. All the memory was okay except I had to reset the clock. No prob! By the way, I did go to AutoZone first. The guy checked it and said the result was "fully charged, bad battery". He said that meant the alternator was working well even though the battery was bad. Then I went over to Costco and bought an Interstate 51R battery for $76.99 and took it home and installed it. In my case, all the corrosion was on the negative terminal and the positive terminal was clean. I don't think the old battery was swollen on the sides. It was 4 years old. Who knows, maybe it just needed cleaning of the negative terminal. In any case, I have a new battery and it's working fine and your video helped give me the confidence to do it, so thanks.
@@jeffstone28 Awesome glad you were able to replace yourself with no issues. 4 years, I'm sure the battery had worn and had a bad cell. They just dont last like the used to sadly. Wow what a deal on battery at Costco! Think I paid $120. May need to get a Costco card again!
Surprisingly awesome video...thanks man...im just curious if I'll be able to switch out batteries on my 2021Civic hatchback? I'm getting conflicting threads...I need to upgrade for my audio system but some are acting like there's no battery I can get...I was planning on keeping the factory for emergency and upgrading to an optima or xs power...im assuming all 10th gens are pretty much the same so I was goin to say f it and try it after watching your vid...thanks again!
You're welcome, glad to help. Should be straightforward process. I'd research if you can fit a larger battery in there. Many of these new Honda's are running undersized batteries. Check the forums. I'd steer clear of Optima, ever since they sold the company off the batteries aren't any good for car audio anymore
Hi, I have a 2018 crv. Is the 3yr point, a safe point to change out your battery? I have noticed that my start/stop idle, no longer works. Is this a sign of my battery going? I shall be heading to my nearest mechanic tomorrow. Thanks for the hack btw, so I don't lose my vehicle settings. I can't imagine the headache if I had not.
Ita possible that could be thr reason. Youll usually start hearing the battery start up weaker, it may take a little longer cranking over before starts. Thats what happened with this one, and I had just driven it a bunch of miles so I knew if the alternator was working it should have been all charged up
@@JonnyDIY thanks for the response and the troubleshooting suggestion. You recommended a battery upgrade, the base is the same, only the positive terminal clam required changing?
@@kseegoolam I believe you have to extend the battery cable leads as theyre not long enough for the larger battery. If you look up "CRV 24F battery Conversion Forum" on google you should come up with some write ups about the process. I probably would have done if, but was under a time constraint when I replaced this one. Plus I've got enough projects to keep me busy hah
Some vehicles can have issues after disconnecting power completely. I dont think Honda has many issues but other cars can require radio codes etc, and computers have to go through diagnostics period
We went to HD and got a 10mm ratcheting wrench, got the negative one off. But the positive one won't come off because the 10mm seems too small to go around the bolts. Do we need a different size for the other side? Why would they make them different sizes?
Should be the same size unless it's been replaced at some point. You could carefully use an adjustable head wrench (crescent wrench) to remove. Or try a larger wrench. Auto parts store will loan you the wrench too 👍
@@JonnyDIY @Jonny DIY Nice, I had no idea parts stores would loan tools! It just wouldn't fit, no matter what we tried--was bigger than the tool opening. This is the 2017 HR-V, and it was in a different position than what you showed (driver's side corner, close to front). Turns out we're just kinda dumb...we tried to remove the bolt on the red side with a tool, but you actually don't have to. You can undo the silver part that sticks out by hand. Just unscrew it. But I learned some key things from your vid, like always start with the negative, and the 10mm did work. Thank you! Now we just need to find the tool that takes it off without you having to lift the tool off, like the one you used. It looked so much faster. Thank you for your help! Car is running again 😊
I think you should of cleaned the battery terminals posts and the inside cable connector first before installing the cable to the battery posts with that battery brush. Best electrical clean contact that way.

@@semuthusenaka4607 You're welcome. You do not need to remove the positive or negative cable. Just hook the battery charger leads right up to either the battery posts or the cable connections. Either works perfect 👍🏻
I don't use another car, I have two cars but when I changed the battery on my other car I didn't return the old one for the refund on the core and kept the battery (It was only about $12.00). I charge it from time to time about once a month or so and just keep it on the shelf. I use this when I change the batteries on my cars to keep the memory saved. The extra battery also comes in handy if I need a 12 volt supply for something. Just remember the main thing to keep in mind. When you remove the positive wire from battery, wrap a towel or something around it to keep it from touching anything while you are removing and installing the batteries. You don't want it to touch anything else under the hood. Good Luck
