The song holds up 20 years later. Great harmonies and the best of 90s sound. Being the same age as the guys, I miss the 90s fashions they were wearing. I still have my choker necklace like Dan is wearing.
Came to this song today. I listened so much to Jars of Clay when realising that pain brought me in front of him and his strength so grateful for his love
This song withheld the test of time for sure.. Absolutely brilliant/timeless music right here. This song has a powerful reflective presence about it..always has.
Saw Jack frost the movie (Starring Michael Keaton) for the first time ever . made me cry. I almost forgot about this song. Glad it is heard in the movie

LYRICS :) A promise or a dare I would jump if I knew you'd catch me Staring over the edge I can't tell if you'll be here for me I close my eyes and make a wish Turn out the lights and take a breath Pray that when the wick is burned You would say that it's all about love You were there when I needed you You were there when the skies broke wide wide open You were there when I needed you You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open You were never here I remember you said Love was more than your good intentions Empty boxes on the floor Things I never asked you for I pray that when the wick is burned You would say that it's all about love You were there when I needed you You were there when the skies broke wide wide open You were there when I needed you You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open I can't see the promise of Excuses you fall upon I pray to God not holding on To things you've left undone You were there when I You were there when I You were there when I needed you

It's not necessarily about crappy parents. It's about a man looking back at his childhood and remembering both the good and bad times he had with his parents. It's also about the man wishing his parents were still in his life. The reason why they're not isn't explained, but it's possible that they've passed away and he's talking to them in Heaven. This is a very honest song about a relationship, something Jars of Clay have always been excellent at writing.
This was one of their biggest hits off of their second studio release, Much Afraid in 1997. Their self-titled first release was in 1995. You're hearing the smooth, unique voice of Dan Hazeltime.
I think many of Jars' songs are like the parables. There is the outside meaning and then when studied, there is an underlying truth. I also believe the song reveals a truth about child neglect...things aren't always what they seem to the casual observer. Like the parables, you are shocked when the truth is revealed.
It doesn't necessarily have to be about a man either. This is an honest song about a relationship, which is something Jars of Clay have always been excellent at writing.
I feel so happy when just now I discovered the title of this song! ☺️ I keep listening to this on the radio, also knowing they're a Christian band is awesome ! 📻 😎
i work at cvs. I kept hearing this song and been trying to find out the title. I just recently found out the title. This is a really a cool song. video is kinda weird.
This song, being from the Much Afraid album, is based on the same book "Hinds Feet in High Places" that the whole album was inspired by. The meaning of the song should first be looked at by reading the book and seeing how it is pulled out of the material there. I agree that this music video doesn't do a lot to show the real meaning behind the song, but that's where you need to know the inspiration behind the album as a whole.
Por acaso esse música já tinha sido gravada anteriormente por alguma banda do mainstream? Eu tive a impressão que já a tinha ouvido antes quando a ouvi na voz do Jars of Clay.
A Brazilian band created a song very similar to this one here, the band is called 'Quatro por Um,' and the song is 'Heróis.' I liked the Portuguese version more, haha. I'm the Clown. I think we filmed this in 97 in a little Chinese restaurant in Hollywood on Hollywood and Highland. It's still there

He wore those a lot, huh? :)
the music stands up... the video, perhaps not. it looks to boy band and striving towards wide commercial appeal.
Everyone wore those silver beaded necklaces at the time ...Im wearing mine right now ❤
Still listening to this song while on lockdown due to Covid.
this is back in the 90s when music was so much better then today
So true
Perhaps not the videos though ;)
Agree. *than

Mandolin at the end provides just the right touch
I had a tape of JARS OF CLAY. I still have it since 1998. :-D

A promise or a dare
I would jump if I knew you'd catch me
Staring over the edge
I can't tell if you'll be here for me
I close my eyes and make a wish
Turn out the lights and take a breath
Pray that when the wick is burned
You would say that it's all about love
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide wide open
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open
You were never here
I remember you said
Love was more than your good intentions
Empty boxes on the floor
Things I never asked you for
I pray that when the wick is burned
You would say that it's all about love
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide wide open
You were there when I needed you
You were there when the skies broke wide, wide open
I can't see the promise of
Excuses you fall upon
I pray to God not holding on
To things you've left undone
You were there when I
You were there when I
You were there when I needed you
Maybe deep inside it was indeed all about love, it just got overtaken by all sorts of worries and problems
What?
Thank you!
A promise or a dare
I would jump if I knew you'd catch me
Staring over the edge
I can't tell if you'll be here for me
I close my eyes and make a wish

Damn., that’s good.
This might be the most 90s thing ever.
I remember reading Animorphs while listening to this whole album over and over on repeat.

Good observation. I've always liked lyrics that don't make sense in a purely linear fashion.

One of my JOC's fave songs.
