It's Immaterial 'Rope' rehearsal '86

Ross Stapleton our Artist and Repertoire (A/R) man and great friend when we where with Siren records. Sometime in the late summer of 1986, Ross came to Liverpool to witness the preparations being made for a string of European concerts. He filmed this footage in one of the many large Victorian mansions around the Sefton Park area, an early run through 'Rope', from the album 'Life's Hard And Then You Die'. We rehearsed there for around a month before moving down to Crash rehearsal studios in the town centre where we were joined by the drummer David Baynton-Power, who later went on to join 'James'.
Ross sent me the footage last year from his home in Australia.

I've said this elsewhere, but you guys should be proud of what you put together for the album. The lyrics and the instrument arrangements are pukka and decades later, it still shines for its wry musicality.

Thanks for posting this local video gem. Life's Hard is a superb album and I remember buying Ed's Funky Diner in Probe in Liverpool when It came out. Happier days and superb memories.

What a find. Such an atmosphere - fire burning in the grate, paint peeling off the walls - I can almost feel I’m there. And such a great song, so well executed. For a rehearsal it sounds perfect!

Just beautiful. Inspired guitar, those great driving piano chords, one of the most memorable bass parts of the album, and of course a flawless vocal performance even in practice. Such a sublime record, even after many years it still resonates.
