My pop-up jail story: Got a flyer in the mail to apply for the Hilton $0AF card and get 100K Hilton Honors point sign up bonus. Had low spend on AMEX cards but kept the balances paid off. Using Chase IHG Premier to hit sign up bonus spend, Chase World of Hyatt to hot Globalist status, and my CSR for PYB. Got the pop-up from AMEX once a week for 2 weeks trying to apply. Spent a week putting some spend on my Gold and EveryDay cards. Then also applied for the Hilton Surpass card ($95 AF). Got accepted right away!!
Planned a trip for NY using the Amex fine hotel and resorts portal and points and I don’t know if this is a hidden gem or well known but I’d like to share that I got a 3rd complimentary night for booking at least three nights with a property close to Central Park. Insane value !! I check the Hilton site because I have some Hilton points and the value was terrible, more expensive to pay for the same hotel then on the Amex travel portal.
Sebby just a FYI If you don’t find the 150k offer. Resy has a platinum offer of 125k for $6000 and 15X points for restaurants and small business up to $25k for 6 months
Oddball data point - I wound up in popup jail due to trying to use a referral link. I had one card (Amex Gold) on which I spent $750 or so a month. Applied for the Delta Gold with a referral link, got the pop up. Tried again without the referral link, no pop up.
Here’s my pop up jail story, I first became an Amex member in January with the Cash Magnet, couple months later I was approved for the Amex Gold (late March), last week I was approved for the Delta Reserve 747 (no pop up) fast forward to now I have been placed in jail for the Marriott Bonvoy after being pre-approved. I’m gonna let some time pass with the Delta, PAY the annual fee and continue putting spend on all 3 cards. Maybe Amex will let me out in a couple months. Only time will tell. But none the less, Amex #1
Great video, trying to get player 2 out of pop up jail right now (via extra non-bonus spend on no AF cards) so she can qualify for the surpass with no AF first year. Only thing I would note for this video Sebby is that when canceling after the first year, Amex pro-rates the AF when you cancel, so if you cancel the day it hits you'd be refunded fully, but if you wait say 10-30 days, they'll keep a few bucks of it.
Possible the spend doesn't fix it though, P2 is possibly getting the popup because I'm trying to get the 30kmr referral offer on the gold card through her application to the surpass. Lol
I was in pop up prison after i applied for the platinum card and had it for like 2 months. I spent well over 7k on brand new appliances. Since i was new to amex and that was my first card i didn't know that you could apply for a few cards and not get a hard pull so i tried the hilton honors and that's when i went to prison. Fast forward i ve been rehabilitated and paid my dues 😆. I now have the Hilton honors and gold. I am currently working on my msr
I think 6 months between applications for cards that are correlated helps stop the popup. I've had the popup go away twice now with delta gold and platinum along with hilton business and aspire cards after I waited 6 months in between applications.
Brought up the 80%-20% rule...but in the wrong context! 👍 I barely put over $300/month on my Blue Cash preferred. It's mainly for groceries, Netflix, and the occasional ferry toll and Uber fare.
I got a pop up for the green card. When it was 50k bonus, Pop-Up jail directed that I only qualify for 30k offer. Interestingly… 1 month before I retrieved a Gold retention offer of 20k. Makes you wonder if their is a formula between other Amex cards.
Just some info for everyone I notice that the pop up only shows on certain cards I was able to applied for a green with no pop up but the gold kept giving me the pop up
put over $500 spend on my amex cards for 3 months since first getting the pop up and still not out of pop up jail - just a data point. Didn't self refer, MS, or close any cards early, just a lot of cards with bonus over the last few years, a few were their own no lifetime language offers and I got the bonus.
I just recently got approved for the Amex Hilton Aspire card but did get a popup warning me that I wouldn't get the intro bonus. I think it might be because I got an Amex Blue Cash Everyday card this July, but haven't been using it much. Either way, even without the welcome bonus I think the Hilton Aspire card has enough perks to make up for it.
My wife was just denied a 125K Skymiles offer on the Delta Reserve!! Argh!! It was more spend! She has two cards, but the main spend is on my card that she's an AU. Her Delta Platinum and Amex Platinum and she's only using the Amex Platinum because she has the 6-month 10x on gas and groceries.
I got approved for the Platinum 100k offer, then the Blue Business Plus, and then the Hilton Honors Amex 100k offer, between Nov 2020 and Feb 2021. I tried to apply for the Delta Gold in April via dummy booking on Delta's site, and found out I was in popup jail. I was still spending a lot on the Platinum for the 10x on gas and groceries, but I wasn't putting much spend on my other Amex cards after earning the bonuses. However, I was still getting targeted offers in my inbox from Delta, and in July, found an article on DoC that contained a link for seeing targeted offers from Delta which bypassed popup jail AND omitted the "lifetime bonus" language. I logged into it, saw that I was targeted for all four Delta cards, and was approved for the Delta Gold. I'm probably still in popup jail for other Amex cards, but I can't blame them, as I've gotten approved for 4 cards in 9 months. I'm not a churner, as I plan to keep & use them all for at least two years (except the Amex Platinum - canceling it in year three when the $695 fee hits). I will switch my grocery spend to the Amex cards (Delta/Hilton) once Q3 ends on the Chase Freedom, which should rectify the "low spender" label I've earned.
@ janice robertson, lol they might just prevent you future cards . I’ve done that with a sign up bonus for the green card but I have 4 other cards that I use often with them so I worried a little bit I spend a lot otherwise.
I just had this problem. Applied to American Expresss Delta Gold card, and got the pop up saying I would not be receiving the sign up bonus. I have the AE Gold card already, and put just over $2000 a month on the card. Not sure how I ended up in jail, but I want my freedom!
I feel betrayed by American Express. I'm pretty sure I didn't go through Pop up jail. 3 months ago I signed up for the gold card offering 60k and 20% restaurant credits. today, they have said that my Gold card is not eligible for the sign up bonus nor the 20% restaurant credit. This is after weeks and months of contacting reps about why the restaurant credits weren't working and why the purchases weren't going towards minimum spend. Reps kept promising they would straighten it out and that I would get what was owed to me. they're going to review it again. But haven't done anything. I have successfully gotten the Platinum sign up bonus and am working on the Platinum CS sign up bonus. This is insane. I have never had the gold card before. What should I do? I'm looking for any insight; has this happened to anyone?
I have no Amex cards, and haven't had any for 5 years or more. I don't churn or do anything suspicious. I got the pop-up applying for H Honors and again trying for Surpass. Phone reps could not tell me anything beyond the pop-up message. Btw, one rep even said you can get only one welcome offer within the entire family of cards. That was news to me.
I messed up I got the 150k welcome bonus but when I actually signed up I had a different window open and signed up through that window and ended up getting just the standard 100k welcome bonus. Fml
Question - I have 2 Amex cards. I got my most recent one 21 months ago, since I have put all my spend on my new card and have only kept my monthly cell bill ($50/ month) on my original card. I have spent $70k in the last 21 months on the new card. I am in pop up jail. Is this because I haven’t spent enough lately on my original card? I didn’t think it would matter bc I have spent so much on the new Amex…
I eat the Chief Boyardee spaghetti out of the can without heating. I spend 4-8k a month on the gold now plat business card and i get every offer under the sun. they gave me 125k points to upgrade to the plat from gold.
Sebby... I don't know about Chunky, but I definitely eat Chef Boyardee Ravioli out of the can without heating it up! Lol. I always keep a can or two in my desk drawer at work...
Sign up for the Hilton AMEX no AF after getting an email every week. Signed in and apply. Got the pop up. I believe because I had 2 cards and closed them 5 years ago. I applied this time by clicking on the link in the email and didn’t get one. Hopefully I still got it. I have to called and find out.
I randomly got out of pop-up jail after I cancelled a card that earns MR points. Literally like a week after cancellation. I did not cancel to get out of jail.
Hi, Sabby. You confused me with annual fee part. First you said asking for a refund after paying second annual fee. And then as example you said ask for downgrade or cancel within 30 days coming up. So which one of them? After 30 days or before annual payment.”?
Just when I was going to Cancel my Hilton aspire card 🤦🏽♂️. Now I’ll just try try to grab a sweet Retention offer or down grade it. I’ve found absolutely no value with this card what so ever.
I just upgraded to the everyday preferred card for 40k points bonus. Since it's just a upgrade can I apply for hilton surpass card and is it a hardpull?
Not sure how I ended up in pop up jail today I opened a Marriott Brilliant card in August, wanted to stack an AMex business bonvoy and went into pop up jail, any ideas why that would be the case?
Assuming nothing weird (self-referral, MS, etc.) probably just more spend on the cards (at least $1k+/month on Amex cards cumulatively). Maybe put a few transactions on Brilliant as well outside of dining credit.
@@AskSebby Here is an update. I called AMEX and they indicated to me that I cannot qualify for the welcome bonus for the AMEX business bonvoy because I already received the Marriott Brilliant card welcome bonus. They claim this is in the terms and conditions but I didn't see it, so maybe it is another example of customer service being wrong.
Experienced pop up jail yesterday for the first time actually. For AMEX Gold. And I haven't done any of those things that would be remotely considered churning or anything. Only thing that makes sense is that I have only had my Amex Platinum for less than 3 months. Previous to that, my first new AMEX was a Hilton card 12 years ago. Maybe cards too close together can trigger it. I have quite a bit of spend historically, so it isn't that.
same. trying to get gold card, have had platinum for over a year and plan to keep it , i would like to have the gold and platinum as my primary cards but im not going to sign up and pay for gold without the SUB. pop up jail sucks
I am confused. I have 2 amex. The Gold and Hilton Aspire. I put 2k a month on my gold at least, i dont put as much on aspire but i do spend but ended up in Pop Up jail.
I have a question; 6 years ego I owed Amex gold card 890 dollars, I was young and stupid, and my card was cancelled. Since then, I cleaned my credit card and my credit reports completely-no collections and no late payments, chase approved me for the sapphire reserve, I have 0 balance on all my credit cards, my credit score among all credit bureaus is above 750-800. Few weeks ego I paid my Amex completely (small money). My question is- what the probability /options to reinstate my relationship with Amex? Did anyone go through it?
I’m assuming it means someone who doesn’t use the cards as much instead of a certain amount of money. Amex gets 99% of its money from swipe fees so even if you don’t spend much if you’re regularly swiping an Amex they don’t care.
@@LandynG137 I just have to ask that question. Because although I like Amex, what a wealthier person using a Platinum or Business Card considers high spend versus what a working class person like myself considers high spend are 2 different things. I personally don’t use the flagship Amex cards, but the ones I do use constitute 90% of all credit card spending I do.
Hello Sebby, just became an AMEX Platinum card holder. I have a question. Is it a good idea to use this card to pay rent and car payment or is that something AMEX frowns upon?
Does anyone know if you are an authorized user for example a gold card, if you don't use that card does it count as little to no spend? I am wondering because I have the plat and spend roughly 2k-4k a month on it but I am getting the popup message for the aspire card. I also have a delta one which I spend less than $500 on but idk?
EDIT to previous comment as the system won't save my edit in reply and has now disappeared: Well, I thought I had logged out of that application, but I just received an email that it was approved. Ugh! So, I have to call once I receive the card to cancel it.
I am in pop up jail on Hilton personal cards. I have the business card but don't use it much which I suspect is the issue. I did the initial spend and that's pretty much it. after I get my Platinum bonus, I likely will try and put a lot of spend on the Hilton card to try and get the $15k free night which maybe gets me out of jail too
I don't know if anyone knows besides amex, my guess is a little mix of both but maybe the number of transactions. My reason for this guess is as a merchant, larger transactions are cheaper per dollar, this is due to a swipe fee, which is just a fee charged for every card used, and then there is a percent fee on top of that.
Thank you for this info! I’m currently trying to get out of pop up jail! I thought I was spending a good amount but perhaps I do fall into the low spender category. Probably also doesn’t help that they gave me 4 cards in 9 months. I got the Blue Cash Preferred, Gold card, Blue Business Cash and Blue Business Plus in this span. All had sign up offers I received. The card that I get the pop up for was the Vanilla Platinum.
Aww but that 2 personal and 2 businesses cards. That doesn’t sound like 2 many cards. I acquired the same in about the same amount of time. It’s probably the spending amount.
I got into pop up jail. Not entry sure why though as I shouldn’t have triggered any of the red flags. I’m just gonna wait and let things cool off because I’m guessing it’s from platinum and gold elevated bonus offers within close proximity
Nicknamed campbell at old job since i ate their chunky soup almost everyday.... no regrets shits filling and is fairly cheap. But heat that shit up in a bowl in the microwave you caveman.(double time half power to avoid splatter)
Question 🙋♂️ if I already own the regular platinum card and I got the welcome bonus and then I apply for the Schwab version would I be able to get the welcome bonus too?
I have a platinum card. I treat my Amex card like my debit card and use it for all transactions where Amex is welcome. Because I treat it like a debit card, I pay off the entire balance every Friday to keep my bank account up to date. By doing this am I helping my credit any? More importantly, am I a good card holder, or a bad cardholder in Amex's eyes? I do not want to end up cut off and loose all my accumulated points. Thanks!
I’ll try this for 3 months, I’ll Spend $500-1000 and hopefully it’ll solve this annoying issue. (If it doesn’t work I’ll prob be so pissed I didn’t earn those points with chase lol )
@@HydrangeaNervosa each month… basically show them that you’re using your card & they’ll get you out of pop up jail. They seem to hate people who don’t use their cards often.
I was wondering why I've gotten this pop-up a couple times over the last year. I guess it was the low spend I had on the SPG card a couple years ago. It spent most of it's time in my sock drawer. Wonder if there's a timeline to get you out of jail for free?

Since then, I cleaned my credit card and my credit reports completely-no collections and no late payments, chase approved me for the sapphire reserve, I have 0 balance on all my credit cards, my credit score among all credit bureaus is above 750-800. Few weeks ego I paid my Amex completely (small money). My question is- what the probability /options to reinstate my relationship with Amex? Did anyone go through it?
you can try to, doesn't hurt
@@kennethwang1666 since my comment I own an Amex platinum and gold;) Amex

Ok so question: I self referred back in 2019 and got clawed back and am currently in pop up jail. Am I just fucked with amex for good?
2:27 what does American Express consider “low spend”?
I’m assuming it means someone who doesn’t use the cards as much instead of a certain amount of money. Amex gets 99% of its money from swipe fees so even if you don’t spend much if you’re regularly swiping an Amex they don’t care.
@@LandynG137 I just have to ask that question. Because although I like Amex, what a wealthier person using a Platinum or Business Card considers high spend versus what a working class person like myself considers high spend are 2 different things. I personally don’t use the flagship Amex cards, but the ones I do use constitute 90% of all credit card spending I do.
@@MetroJet2000 I’m in the same boat as you. I spend about 2-3k a month on my Amex cards and I’ve never had a pop up and I have 6 cards
Sebbys analogies make me think he's a robot pretending to be a human.
You mean humans don't eat cold soup from a can? 🤨 Noted.🤖
@@AskSebby suspicions confirmed 🤣
Hello Sebby, just became an AMEX Platinum card holder. I have a question. Is it a good idea to use this card to pay rent and car payment or is that something AMEX frowns upon?
You cannot make care note with a CC. US law prohibits pay credit with credit.
Does anyone know on the Amex green if gas stations code as transit?
You must really love Chunkys haha :)
Heh, emergency food stash :)
My P2 has 1 Amex (personal gold) that she opened 5 months ago and got pop up jailed trying to apply for a Surpass 🤬
People say you are students not because you look young, but because you are taking advantage of student offers all the time.
EDIT to previous comment as the system won't save my edit in reply and has now disappeared: Well, I thought I had logged out of that application, but I just received an email that it was approved. Ugh! So, I have to call once I receive the card to cancel it.
Ah, more relationship advice from Sebby…. 🤣
I am in pop up jail on Hilton personal cards. I have the business card but don't use it much which I suspect is the issue. I did the initial spend and that's pretty much it. after I get my Platinum bonus, I likely will try and put a lot of spend on the Hilton card to try and get the $15k free night which maybe gets me out of jail too
My 88 year old Grannie used to eat Chunky soup cold too. Not sure if that is a good thing or not for you lol
Question Sebby…what’s more important to AMEX the amount that you charge each moth or the number of transactions that you make with the cards?
I don't know if anyone knows besides amex, my guess is a little mix of both but maybe the number of transactions. My reason for this guess is as a merchant, larger transactions are cheaper per dollar, this is due to a swipe fee, which is just a fee charged for every card used, and then there is a percent fee on top of that.
Yeah can food is crazy…not heating it up tho!!!??
🤢🤮
Bad habits from college. :( Now it's my emergency food stash.
@@AskSebby the rim of grease on top of the can if they sit for a long time though….
Amex don't worth it if you don't have a great use of it and the budget for that kind of card. I'll stay away from that card.
What happens if Amex blacklists user and user has a Corp acc, for thrills if user is employed at apple or fb
You can be in your 50s with lots of AMEX spend and still eat hunky from a can...
You got both the platinum and gold bonus offers? I thought your only available to get one of the bonus offer with AMEX? New to the CC game sorry
@@bryandegante7654 only one welcome bonus per specific card. Even in the same family you can get all the bonuses
Wow! So I could be traveling abroad and AMEX could arbitrarily cancel my card while I am on the road. That's not going to work.
Realistically that’s not gonna happen
Nicknamed campbell at old job since i ate their chunky soup almost everyday.... no regrets shits filling and is fairly cheap. But heat that shit up in a bowl in the microwave you caveman.(double time half power to avoid splatter)
I'm still stuck in pop up jail..
Wolfgang Puck soup. Microwave for 90 seconds in a bowl. Never Campbell's. Never cold.
I got my my bonus before I hit the minimum spent
Squuuuuad. I could have used this video a year ago. I guess I'll have to spend more 🤦🏾♂️
Always heat up your Chunky
Did your voice get deeper? lol
Question 🙋♂️ if I already own the regular platinum card and I got the welcome bonus and then I apply for the Schwab version would I be able to get the welcome bonus too?
Yes
What should I do with my Amex plat after a year? Downgrade to green?
I have a platinum card. I treat my Amex card like my debit card and use it for all transactions where Amex is welcome. Because I treat it like a debit card, I pay off the entire balance every Friday to keep my bank account up to date. By doing this am I helping my credit any? More importantly, am I a good card holder, or a bad cardholder in Amex's eyes? I do not want to end up cut off and loose all my accumulated points. Thanks!
You should be fine if you have a good amount of spend on the cards.
I admit i've eaten chunky out of the can unheated. Glad I'm not the only one.
I’ve never done that. Canned meals are so easy to heat up [in a bowl or stovetop container] before consuming, so why wouldn’t you?
chunky bussin
I’ll try this for 3 months, I’ll Spend $500-1000 and hopefully it’ll solve this annoying issue. (If it doesn’t work I’ll prob be so pissed I didn’t earn those points with chase lol )

@@HydrangeaNervosa update! Applied today & it went through! So I put 500-700 spend on my old every day amex and it did the trick!
@@pg6299 hey, sorry for the late reply. So In the course of three months you out 500 to 700, or was this each month? O.o
@@HydrangeaNervosa each month… basically show them that you’re using your card & they’ll get you out of pop up jail. They seem to hate people who don’t use their cards often.

I don’t use canned soup at all. You should cut the Chunky out of your video.
What if they don’t give you a retention offer… and they say ok that’s fine but you really don’t wanna cancel the card 😂🤣
"OK, well I have 30 days right? I'll think it over and call back." Or something along that line.
Damn that’s good I didn’t even think of that 🤦🏽♂️
I always eat out of the can saves on water and dish soap
I was wondering why I've gotten this pop-up a couple times over the last year. I guess it was the low spend I had on the SPG card a couple years ago. It spent most of it's time in my sock drawer. Wonder if there's a timeline to get you out of jail for free?
Did you get out?
