    Great video. The SKX was released two years after I joined the Navy, was my first mechanical watch, and still in my rotation. It’s been with me all over the world in my 24 year Military career. I “upgraded” to a Seiko SRP777, but I just don’t love it the way I love my SKX. I’ve been through a million straps and bracelets with this watch and I’ve had it on a Seiko jubilee for the past year or so. Gotta own the “jangle”.

    Replaced the 7s26 to NH36 and my SKX is been a dream since.
    Literally running like a quartz now with about +-0.5 a day.
    And everything is aligned in my SKX!
    The only thing that is bad is that I ruined my case a bit with bezel removals when I removed the bezel few years ago
    for cleaning while being unexperienced. But i just brushed it manually with some sand paper and its better now.

    Overrated? Probably not for a 20 year old watch but clearly brands like Orient have surpassed it's features. You cant argue with it's iconic status though.

    • @treedillinger5801

      Iconic? A blatant cheap Rolex ripoff... 🤔

    • @vinny8vinny
      @vinny8vinny 6 років тому +21

      Tree Dillinger if it was it would have a cheap cyclops copy, a 3 o’clock crown and the same indexes, the same hands, same case, I could go on......it’s not a Steinhart. I do feel that a lot divers look similar to the untrained eye tho👍🏻

    • @treedillinger5801
      @treedillinger5801 6 років тому

      vinny8vinny ok, it’s not an exact copy, but come on. The dial, the bezel, the bracelet. They didn’t design it out of thin air. If anything they very specifically changed a couple of features so that they can call it their own. It’s not just the divers, look at all their watches. Look at vintage Seikos from the 70s. 90% of them are fake Datejusts. You can’t tell me it’s not a blatant rip-off. Oyster bracelets, jubilee bracelets, rotating bezels, fluted bezel, screw down crown.
      That’s really all Seiko does with their entry level automatic watches: copy Rolex for a much cheaper price. They don’t even pretend they’re not doing it, come on. Everyone does know that, right? I mean- the sky is blue...right??
      That should be the starting point of any discussion like this one. It’s simply a discussion of how different Rolex ripoffs at different price points compare. Nothing more, nothing less.

    • @treedillinger5801
      @treedillinger5801 6 років тому +1

      1bentley4ever ...try reading closer, Champ, I specifically addressed that. They’re not going for 1:1 copy (minus the branding) like Steinhart. We can say “inspired by” or whatever, but be serious.
      Let’s use common sense here for a second, Sport. How do you think they designed the SKX? Do you think they were unaware of the Submariner? ...or do you think they were holding a Submariner in their hands? You’re not honestly suggesting that they didn’t take the Sub (and the datejust) and say let’s make a much cheaper version of this watch? Think about what you’re saying here.
      I have both the Sub and the SKX, for the record. I have 2 versions of the Seiko I use as beaters. I recommend them for that; but iconic? Bullshit.

    • @vinny8vinny
      @vinny8vinny 6 років тому +2

      Tree Dillinger you make some good points, especially with the oyster bracelet. I mean even the name “007”. It is a very different watch tho. Inspired by....yes, every diver must be inspired by the fifty fathoms and the sub I guess. Let’s be real tho even Rolex didn’t start making good bracelets till the last decade 😂

    It's hard to call a watch overrated when so many people gladly shell out $200 for one! It's iconic & legendary in it's own right and that gives it certain status, regardless of lack of features in it's price range. The Orient Ray II was recently selling for $50 less than the SKX and feature-wise on paper, is undeniably a better value. In a way, they are like a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, clearly not the best motorcycle for the money, but man, it's a "Harley!"..like, it's a "Seiko SKX!"

      @@lionellim1101 , although i like Omega Seamaster Professional 300, i actually ended up buying a Seagull D819.459 - a beautiful dress watch with ST2130 (read ETA 2824-2) movement with hacking, hand winding and precision of +2 seconds per day. For 190 US dollars. How about that?
      But this is not what i wanted to say. What i realy wanted to say is that Seiko will not improve their quality as long as You WILL BUY this piece of crap (SKX007) for 200 bucks. Just think about it: right now, in this moment, Seiko HAS a better solution for roughly the same amount of money, but they will not implement this solution as long as the old solution works. Why bother? Right now You could have a better version of iconic SKX for the same 200 bucks - with hacking, hand winding, good bracelet, aligned bezel etc. But no - it's not a bug, it's a feature to have in 2018 a watch made in Japan of worse quality than a chinese watch for 1/3 of the price.
      Enjoy Your piece of crap and have a nice day!

      Being able to hack makes it easier to tell if your watch is still accurate and might need some servicing. Handwinding is a lot more efficient and easier than shaking. That said it doesn't bother me if my skx has none of these features since I've got other watches in rotation. The hacking also helps me when I regulate my watch since I don't have timegrapher.

    I bought a 009 years ago. I’ve not been a big seiko collector and I probably won’t really be. That being said though, the SKX is one of my favorite watches of all time, all quirks included. Do I wish it hacked and hand wound, sure, but I also love that it doesn’t. I absolutely love the chintzy jubilee, I’ve upgraded with about every bracelet available but always go back to it. My bezel doesn’t align unless I make it, and it doesn’t really stay there...easy fix if you are the least bit handy. I run about 10 seconds off per day, but I wear it twice a week at most. The crystal is quite scratched up. I still love everything about it. This watch and a Citizen promaster diver get the MOST wrist time of all my watches. I’ll probably upgrade the SKX to a domed sapphire, but I’m leaving everything else alone. I’ve thought it was overrated at times, but then I wore it those days and it all made sense.

    Great video.
    Also, the SKX is an equalizer. At a place I worked at the manager wore an Omega Seamaster on a perlon and I wore my SKX proudly on a black leather strap. The SKX is the bad boy in the room that is shamed by no one.
    They are, however, not as robust as many think. The 7s26 movement in mine recently got messed up and so I am planning in the near future on retrofitting it with an NH36 movement. that's another reason why this piece has a cult following; they can be modified in so many different ways.
    An SKX has a soul. Take the guts out of it, take it apart and put it back together, modify it but it still is what it is.

    Hacking? Never had need of it. Hand wind? Sure but a couple of quick shakes and the SKX is away. End links? This is a critique of the watch,not the bracelet. Misaligned chapter ring? Never had a problem. However, the crystal is a fingerprint magnet and the crown doesn’t always thread easily. Apart from that, for the price, fantastic piece, I have three.

      No handwinding = amplitude problems you won't be able to solve in the long term.
      But hey, most SKX owners don't even know what amplitude is...

    • @chrissearle23
      @chrissearle23 6 років тому +4

      KRaikkonenSF Did you read this somewhere or is it simply your Opinion? All the SKX owners I know are enthusiasts and in general ( only my opinion) , most enthusiasts know what amplitude is. But for the sake of your argument, let’s assume you are correct, I’m not sure how not being aware what amplitude is detracts from the SKXs great charm, character and value.

    • @KRaikkonenSF
      @KRaikkonenSF 6 років тому +2

      The watch is technically obsolete. And it is true that a large majority of watch owners don't know that never handwinding a movement causes a reduction of maximal amplitude with time, with a negative impact on precision (COSC models running at -30 per day after 10+ years...)
      What I mean is this: many watches which are obsolete, or sub-par technologically, still have a history or general feeling that makes them very relevant. I was offered a 1967 Rolex GMT which had been to Vietnam for several tours....obsolete ? Damn right. But still very relevant in a collection.
      I'll even say Russian watches are relevant also, yet their movements are....you know.....
      But regarding the SKX, what we tend to hear from owners is that the watch is NOT obsolete because (choose from the following: it can be regulated to be "COSC compliant", sapphire is useless because "I don't bang my watch", handwinding/hacking is pointless because "I personally don't use it"....) So in essence a lame attempt at arguing the SKX is technocally on par with the Swiss, rather than accepting it's not and that it is what comes along with the watch rather than the watch itself which makes it relevant.
      But as a watch the SKX, along with the Seiko 5 for that matter, is a very cheap one.

    I have an SKX007, I got 4 years of almost daily wear out of it before the crown stem broke and the movement shut down. It didn't get a flogging, and as I understood it these things are supposed to be rugged. Otherwise I love the watch, but yeah, an expensive overhaul for what's supposed to be the essential beater. In that sense, my experience is that they are a little overrated.

    Hardlex is great, I accidentally smashed my PADI diver into a marble clock. The marble crumbled while the hardlex was unmarked. I don't recommend putting it to the test though. :D

    Couldn't agree more if it's not broke don't fix it. I like the fact that it has the 7S26 movement. It worked when it came out in 96 and it is still a very functional tool watch. Sure it's not up to date with watches in this price range but people don't or shouldn't buy this watch for quartz accuracy. They buy this watch because it's iconic. I also own a 2019 Rolex Submariner and although the SKX is a lot less costly I enjoy wearing it as much as my Submariner

    I absolutely agree with your insights. I alternate between my 007 and 009 weekly. Albeit both on Strapcode super jubilee bracelets. They are bulletproof watches! Well...not literally, a .25 acp would probably kill it ha! But seriously, for what you get for the money is really a no brainer in choice for a solid, reliable, comfortable, attractive timepiece. No, it's NOT A LUXURY WATCH! And wasn't meant to be or trying to be. Anyone who believes the model is overrated probably doesn't own one.

    I think that there has been three versions of movement, not sure about what but as far as I can remember there are 7s26 A, B, and C, and it's something about the hairspring or the mainspring. So not completely without any improvements for 22yrs.

    While I think my Orient Mako USA is my preference, I do respect your opinion. I bought an SKX013, and I enjoy the smaller size. The crown feels a big more wiggly than my Orient, setting the date/time takes some precision (it's hard to get the crown in the perfect position to change it), and it cost more than my Orient (I got the Orient for $179). I might start to wear my SKX again. That's so true that the SKX looks great on many bands; you can't say that about my Orient.

    If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And on that subject my first Seiko Divers watch is still going strong after 40 years. Why do people have to try and find fault with everything? Especially considering the price, these watches are EPIC.

    Loved your take on the SKX. Flawed? Certainly. I got mine for $135; it's taught me lots and has accompanied me (and still does) through thick and thin. It's part of the experience of how much one can pay and still have fun.. SRPs have updates and are so much fun, but also cost twice as much.

  • @yogililly1
    @yogililly1 6 років тому

    Have the SKX013... Has a 10% premium with same movement but smaller diameter at 38mm.
    However, all watches are family watches with 6, 6.25 and 6.75 wrists and ideally all have 20mm lugs allowing for a few strap options to be worn on many watches.
    If the Orient Mako II or Ray II would have been smaller size with 20mm lugs instead of 22mm would have bought Orient and saved $50.

    I certainly like the look of the SKX, but I do believe it is terrible value since in the same price range you can get other watches with a sapphire crystal and an NH36 movement instead of the 7s26. A good alternative if you like the look is the Deep Blue Nato diver 300

    It's funny you made this video because I sold mine a few days ago and don't feel bad though. While it looks good and is a strap beast, it wasn't in my regular rotation. It didn't bother me about the hacking or winding, and I'd recommend it to anyone, but it was never a big hit with me. I never ... bonded with it. I have always been wondering why people need a diver mechanical watch if they are not diving?
    And if they are diving, why don't they take a good quality G-Shock like Frogman which is specialised in diving?
    I know it is fashion and appearance. I know it is about personal preference but I can't stop thinking about practicality of diving watches.

    Unfortunately in the UK to buy this watch new now it's around £300 and the used prices are pretty high too. For that kind of money you can get a couple of better spec'd Orient Ray's, a couple of Citizen promasters, a Zelos Mako or a tonne of other microbrand movements that offer saphire crystal, better movements, bronze cases etc... It's very overpriced for what it is at the moment. Maybe back in 2018 it was a good deal but not now.

    Let me share a good tip to hacking the seconds hand. When you pull out the crown, twist slightly backward as you want to turn the minutes hand anti clockwise and hold it with a little force. Tadaaa... The seconds hand will stop and you can sync with your reference time...

    Don't get me wrong , I love the skx design . I really do . But hacking and handwinding atleast my dude. I don't mind the mineral crystal or hardlex . I think it's an iconic watch , but the nh36 movements are going for 19 bucks in the UK. So Seiko is probs selling those movments for a dime, and that movment has hacking and handwinding . So, why haven't they put the 4r36 movment yet.

    • @deanwaller8283
      @deanwaller8283 4 роки тому

      Because it doesn't need them, hacking?if you want to the second accuracy why the fuck are you wearing a mechanical?get a quartz
      Hand winding, literally don't give a shit about it,and it means extra wear on the crown
      Also the 7s26 is specified to be more accurate than the 4r36
