  • Discussion of excerpts from the Bhagavad-gita. We focus on the influence of the Vedas and Upanishads, Krishna's revelation to Arjuna of his place within a larger universe, and the context of the Mahabharata. Please note that I am not an expert in Sanskrit literature or in Hindu thought, nor do I claim to be. In addition, the students in my class have not read the entire poem, so we are discussing only those parts that are excerpted in their anthology. Finally, please note that this is a session of a general course in World Literature for second-year students at a small public university in the southeastern US. Few of the students in the class have any experience or knowledge of Hinduism, and with only about an hour to teach the text to them, I have to simplify some concepts.

At the end of Bhagavad gita after explaining the whole concept of karma and dharma to Arjuna, Lord Krishna tells him that "I've given you the most profound knowledge of the universe, now the choice is yours and you must choose between right or wrong for the sake of dharma. Depending on your choice or action, your karma will be decided." So, the point is that Krishna's choice to Arjuna (not an ORDER of Krishna that he must follow) makes Bhagavad gita/Hinduism more unique scripture than any other monotheistic scriptures around the world. I really enjoyed your lecture tho. Thank you for sharing.

hinduism is also monothestic. It has only one god called paramatma (supreme consciousness) ...all the other life is just manifestions of paramatma ....humans have very low level of consiousness but can be ignited by yoga practices to connect to the divinie supreme conciousness....speaking of numerous gods in hinduism, those gods are just again higher conscious beings but never higher than supreme consciousness

Its not kavya sir, it is ItiHaas means "thus it happened". but i understand that western or Christians cannot understand eastern/Hindu sensibilities and the corollary is also true.

It is also a kavya. Kavya literally means poetry. Bhagvad GITA (i.e. song) is definitely a poem.

1 hour? its a great effort within that time-limit to explain Gita, Congratulations. Some hiccups here and there some context has been changed from original Some explanation of Varanas were correct not all, but collectively great effort to explain that Hinduism is a concept of professional work etiquette and how we do it to attain god himself.

That “monkey” flag is Hunuman. The primate whose heart belongs to Ram the prior avatar to Krishna. Ram he who keeps his word. When the primate ascends in deeds and action. His future evolves. Key word human evolution. Vishnu is the heart of all beings. Therefor the controller. Indra is the web of the universe, the 5 senses. So anyway this is profound real world stuff. Anyway have a nice day. Thought that the hunuman banner needed some uplifting.

Dharma has a very profound meaning. When you are student of a perticular guru, you have different dharama but when you are a king and the guru is violating his true dharama; being a king even if you have to defeat your guru, you have to do it. Mahabharata is all about DHARMA of each individual. Those who do follow true dharma wins.

    Arjuna & Krishna are cousins.
Dhitrarashtra was the eldest but as he was blind from birth his younger brother stepped in to lead the kingdom's army to build the Great Kuru Kingdom. And after Pandu died(when he gave in to his sexual desires towards his younger wife) Dhitrarashtra filled the position of the king while Vidura his trusted half brother guided him. Dhitrarashtra wanted to pay respect to his brother pandu who made the kingdom and wanted to pronounce Yudhisthira king but his 100 sons made him change his mind.

Also Dharma has many connotations. Sanatana Dharma is the Vedic tradition. There was never a religion called Hinduism. We never had a religion. Sanatana Dharma translates as The Eternal Way. This Dharma for a society/humanity as a whole. Dharma has a different connotation when used in an individual human sense meaning duty or responsibility. It is also applied to animals, plants, rivers and rest of nature. Each has their dharma and when everyone acts according to their dharma, the experience of blissful living is for all.

Veda is as old as the age of this universe. It was created after Brahma came into existence in this Kalpa, by Lord Shiva along with Lord Vishnu. The period is approx 33,00,000 years old. However, Vedas were consolidated by great sage Veda Vash about 5500 yrs ago ( in very brief ...)

Vedic period is long before 1500BCE and Buddhism and Jainism are around 500-400BCE(much later than Bhagavadgita - 3000BCE). As someone who claims not to be a sanskrit expert nor a hindu, it would be better to research the topic and reference translations done by indian sanskrit scholars as most western scholars have no understanding of multiple meanings of words and the importance of context to apply meaning most appropriate. They translate literally leading to mis-interpretation. Also, varna is not the same as caste. Caste comes from Portuguese and is a western concept not what was practised in the vedic period. Varna was as you stated a social structure but based on skills and competency of a person. Everyone got the same basic education and then branched out to the stream of skills most suited to their character, skills, physical capabilities etc.,. Mobility between Varnas was possible if capability was proved. Several of the great sages were from Shudra or Khsatriya varna. Even Arjuna was a great dancer and not just a warrior. So a lot more complex social structure than black or white. Brahmins were intellectuals and were also advisers to kings not just priests or scholars. Brahmins were typically not expected to do labour to earn their living but were paid for their advise, taken care of by society as they spent hardship to gain philosophical insights to help society, similar to today's psychologists, astrologists, or scientists. Brahmins came up with astronomy, necessary mathematics to support astrology as well as engineering for construction, scales of music etc.,. and inner engineering like yoga, ayurveda(medicine), surgery.

@@userth13539 keep trying to push your hippo dreams that the western knowledge is superior and Aryans came to India from outside. There is no archeological or scientific evidence there too if you think you need archeological evidence that will survive thousands of years of civilization. There is enough scientific content in the vedas and in other manuscripts that prove the geographical location and time of the people. The vedas do not talk of any anatolia or such place. They do talk of a river that is geologically estimated to have dried up around 2000BC. So the vedas had to be written much earlier naturally. Saraswati is proof of that fact if you need scientific proof. At the time Saraswati flowed as described in the vedas the anatolia and european people were walking around in underwear as hunting/gathering people. They could not write the vedas ever.

I have understood the issue, related propositions and evidences recently discovered(over last 10-15 years) before accepting my truth. Up to you, what you believe but do not push propaganda at me or other Indians. Provide evidence like you asked to prove theories that the evangelists and colonials pushed to denigrate the Indians. It is clear the europeans learnt from Greeks, who learnt from Arabs but the Arabs learnt from Indians. From weights, distance measure to geometry, trignometry, algebra to numerals all came from India. Deny that and you will prove who you really are. Astronomy, navigation, seasons were all known to India way before for daily life. We have documented sun centric system well before islamic flat earth theory and european earth centric theories. The word cast is alien to India and is denigrated quite heavily, I request not to use it. If you read or watch Mahabharat: sanantana dharama has been open to new talents just like character of Karna in Mahabharata. His birth environment has been used to take advantage but there have been others who support him to be like Kshatriya. Again here I mean like Kshatriya means he was allowed to be a king or warrior since he had all those characters
