Clearly you don't, because this is a textbook remake. There's like double the content and the game plays very differently, only the bones of the original game remain. By that same token, no, you weren't missing out on the original. I played it for about 20 hours a few years ago, and the idea was good enough for the game to be decently fun but the execution was terrible. The remake fixes basically all the issues from the original and also builds on it quite a lot, making an overall excellent game - which the original was not. It was a good first attempt by some college students just getting into game development.

Quite literally, Chris did the mastering process on them again. I would guess that's what the description was talking about, but fair enough for the misunderstanding. ROR is the embodiment of "has no right going as hard as it does" and I for one am here for it. Some games have fire soundtracks, great sprite work, fantastic ambiance, enjoyable gameplay loops, a consistent feeling of improvement, etc, but as a franchise, very few are able to bring them all together as consistently as ROR.

RoRR is 100% one of the best remakes thats been released so far. Everything is dripping with respect to the old and intense care for the new, feeling nostalgic while also so fresh with new abilities, characters, enemy interactions, trials, secrets AND a very good multiplayer. i would like hades 2 news though...
the fact that people even think this game should be a free update speaks volumes to how seamlessly hopoo integrated all the new content without breaking the feel of the original game

Yeah, he works really well in a 2D setting, to the point that it would he impossible to replicate him faithfully in 3D. I absolutely love his kit, and the wavedashing tech is really powerful and fun to do

they not only did a lift up of every sprite. they even gave every map 6 variations (except the Hog secret and the final map Risk of rain which has 2) also made "skins" which are Fucking unlockable and made 3 Alternate Abilities For EACH CLASS (secret char doesn't have alts) changes to items. and then they bring in modders to help with the game... one of them being the creator of Starstorm one of the big mods for Risk of rain 1.

I've been playing since Risk of Rain 1 came out, and I'm in LOVE with the world's lore. Risk of Rain Returns adds in SO MUCH new lore! It implies so much stuff about why the events happened which I wont spoil here, and even has tons of secrets not made obvious hidden within the game, like a hidden unlockable survivor!!! It's the perfect remake, it's truly perfect, I'm so impressed.
Oh no... I HAD to shoot with z in RoR1... My dude. You can rebind your keys. Everyone I know rebound their keys to a setup pretty close to the "modern" default control scheme that RoRR has. Which, you know. Again, can be rebound.
I am stupid. But if I'm being fair to myself I didn't know what I wanted the controls to be. I honestly didn't think that a recreation of 2's controls would work for me but it does. I just didn't feel pushed to make the game work for me. Even if it only takes a few minutes.
@@bigfreakinfrog Yeah. That's fair. RoR1 is also just overall harder to get into. For me personally, the RoR2 controls didn't work, but I've played a few other platformers where I used that layout before which worked pretty well for me.

Loved RoR1 and didnt really get into 2 but Returns is just fantastic, the feeling of a new Risk of Rain is so unique my one and ONLY COMPLAINT ARE THE PROVIDENCE TRIALS. I dont mind them existing, they are neat and some are fun to me but why did you have to lock items and an artifact behind gold rank completion.......
That one is kinda wild lol. I'm having a lot of fun with Trials personally. I wished there were some tougher achievements in RoR2 as well because when I ran out of stuff to strive for, the game became exclusively a background thing for me and my friends to play.

talking about the music real quick, i don't think chris is staying on to do the music for the future dlcs. that being said, the one track we HAVE heard from the new dlc 100% captures the feel so i'm not that worried :)
I think you actually described what RoRR is best. It’s a remake, not a remaster. It’s keeping the same core game, whilst changing most of the things that people didn’t like, and adding new things as well. They’ve done the impossible. They’ve kept the old fans happy while making the newer ones happy as well. I keep on saying this, but hopoo is dang good at what they do.
i love the series and loving return. its just a serious shame that the few friends that i have is turned off PURELY because its 2d. i was able to convince them to play RoR2 but they just refuse on return though they like it almost as much as me

i agree with every thing you said here but i also fill there are some problems with the game first i think the maps are too big it takes to much time to go through them and find items and even when you do find a chest a lot of the time its an equipment and not a buff they need to tone dawn the chance for an equipment and zooming out the camera to 1.0 take away the attachment you feel toward enemies and your character. the combat also dont feel that engaging the from what i played you just spam jump to avoid attacks where in ror2 avoiding attacks feels a lot better. but maybe my complaints become less of a problem the more you play the game unlocking ne items and learning the layout of the maps or what not. anyhow ror2 is my favorite game ever and i am happy to see you making a video on the franchise. and here hoping gearbox wont make ror a cheap cash cow moving forward even though that phone game doesn't give me much hope.
I think RoR, at least for now lol, is safe. The newest DLC seems pretty good just from the glimpses of the map, although I doubt they'll reach the same feeling as Hopoo games' developers. I ain't hold anything against em' for makin' a phone game. It just makes sense. Some people are gonna be drawn to em' and its an easy chunk of change from those willing to hop in. They announced that release alongside DLC for the actual game by people excited to work on it so I'm cautiously optimistic. Oh yeah also, on the map, I should have included that. The feeling of wasting time is a bit lessened the more you play the game but there is still a chance for you to get nothing over the course of a few minutes and run into a dead end. I didn't see Randy in the Risk of Rain anniversary stream so thats good at least.

dont feel the same way, the controls are (currently) clanky, the progression in game feels so much more punishing if you dont get good rng and the way of transportation feels underwhelming, like why not add another way of traversing through the map other than ropes and geysers.
I get you. It's not gonna be for everyone. They kept the design of the first one which is based on a more restrictive game style. I forgot to mention in the video that dead ends with no loot feel really bad to come across, especially with very little traversal abilities.

For me its making runs more consistent while inflicting greater challenges on myself and how chaotic the screen gets later in the run.
