The meaning of the song Runaway basically tells about the true story of the vocalist, Chester Bennington. When Chester was a child, he was sexually abused by an older friend. He felt the desire to escape (Runaway), from his naughty friends.
From this event, Chester was mentally affected. He is afraid of being blamed by people, he is afraid of being blamed by society, he is also sorry for hanging out with the wrong people.

Uma curiosidade: A banda ficou muito tempo tentando fazer a música "Runaway", porém não estavam (de certa forma) conseguindo. Então eles quiseram fazer uma música que mostrasse a frustração com isso, e assim surgiu a "One Step Closer". Mas, lembrando que a música (One Step Closer) foi apenas o resultado da frustração, a letra dela é sobre outra coisa.
E One Step Closer acabou fazendo mais sucesso q Runaway (mas isso não significa q seja melhor)
Na verdade a One step Closer é uma música sobre a frustração que eles estavam a ter com a Label e o Gilmore..., pois eles foram rejeitados quase 50 vezes, e sempre a fazer mudanças nas demos
