@@bosshogg3279 they're audio only episodes in a more casual format we recorded before we'd decided on a name and set up this channel. We're aware of the omission, 1 and 2 should be up over the next few days with 4 to follow.
Ben: Sorry bosshogg that's my fault, as Shaun said we recorded a bunch of more casual episodes to just get things going, as the project had kinda stalled for months, and I named the episodes in the order they were recorded. We should be up to date by the end of the weekend, and I'll ensure that they go up in numerical order properly after that!
It was a pleasure hearing your well-informed passion on games I've mostly never heard about. My only 4x experience is checking out Gladius after seeing Ben play Zephon. It's been a blast, I have to get back into that more. Interesting to hear you talk about the real life rabbit hole that comes with war-oriented sim games. I've had similar experiences with combat flight sims. Mostly I stick to WW-II for the simple reason that at least then most of the stuff you're dealing with is mechanical and not as much manipulating multiple computers on your computer in the cockpit of an F-16. The manuals on those are... thick and full of abbreviations ghehe. Glad to have discovered this channel!
Ben: I think out of all of us, the only one I know who plays occasionally Gary Grigsby's games is me, although I know Das and Richard will have played them before too. I'd be up for that though, I'll see what the others think
Another great episode, thanks a lot guys, very entertaining. Zephon: I think I enjoy Gladius better. It made me realize that IP / setting is perhaps a bit more important to me than I realized. I just can't get myself to care about anything in the Zephon world. The end game decision / struggle is very interesting though. Age of Wonders 4: can't wait for the episode. I have over 90 hours in it and I just don't really like it. I think I enjoy Planetfall better. I think AoW4 might be hurt by over balancing it for multiplayer, which as Ben observes, I'm one of the majority that never does mulitplayer. I tried it again recently with the latest patch and it just doesn't grab me. Agreeing with Ben here again, objectively a well made game, but also not for me. I'm really keen to see an indepth discussion of the game, not to trash it but to find out, how could it get better and how could future games learn from this. I'm probably just grumpy old man, though, as it continues to be quite popular. Lucid's lethality comments: I think this is an extremely important point. I am getting very tired of the health points / damage numbers approach and have been migrating to wargames that model damage (and in the modern setting), lethality. I wish more tactics / strategic games took this approach, if appropriate. The very small addition of armor piercing in Gladius / Zephon makes a bigger difference in how the game feels than in say, the Civ model. I wish the 2 games were more lethal though. Armored Brigade 2: On my short list for spending time. I'm starting to get pretty enamored with the the way lethality works with real-world modern weapons platforms and have been starting to spend some time with cold war and modern era games, but not as much as I'd like to. AB2 is top of this list for me to play. I have watched a lot of videos of them, like Richard's, and just need to find the time (sigh). I have CMO and that's another one I want to get to as well, as well as Flashpoint Campaigns. Game(s) of the Year for me: - no games really stood out as "wow" games for me this year, so the games that were my top games of the year: - MegaMek (the game I most want to commit time to, especially get into MekHQ) - RogueTech (starting to wane a bit on this as I'm trying to spend more time with MegaMek) - Balatro - Baldur's Gate 3 Gaming New Year's Resolution - try and get into Shadow Empire; I'm more intimidated by the length of the game than by anything else; if you guys have suggestions on how to have short games with this, I'd love to hear them - also try and get back into Dominions 6; I played a bit of it when it came out and enjoyed it and am not able to spend the time that I'd really like to
Ben: top marks for the top comment! Thanks! If you like MegaMek you have excellent taste! It's one of my favourite games ever, the BattleTech game system is so damn good, and MegaMek and MekHQ make it such a joy to play.
I agree with the idea of real modeling of weapons and lethality being much more fun compared to super balanced dps mechanics involving little chunks of health bars at time which is a problem that plagues many modern games.
Where are episodes 1,2 & 4?? I feel shortchanged!

Great episode. It flowed so well it´s like you´ve been doing this podcast for 500 episodes rather than only 5! #1 podcast for me these days
Ben: Aww thanks! Make sure you check out eXplorminate too, I understand Rob's got a new episode going up soon.
Both episodes so far have been great! Thanks for the podcast!
Brilliant, looking forward to more...
Ben: Hey Dave! Thanks for listening man, more incoming over the next few days.

Great show!!! Would you consider a discussion of modern war turn based top down games like grigsby’s, decisive campaigns, etc. Loving the show. Thanks

I'd be up for that though, I'll see what the others think

Cool. Looking forward to listening. Only via UA-cam or also through podcast apps?
Ben: It'll be going up on Spotify and then syndicated out from there once we've got a moment to set it up.
A 'wargames' episode discussing realism vs playability?
