I've read many, many excellent Fantasy series over the years, maybe about 40 or 50, but for me there are 4 that stand head and shoulders above the rest as the best of the best - Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, The Realm of the Elderlings and Memory Sorrow and Thorn. Thank you Tad. (I'd put Otherland in there too if it was fantasy!)
This was great! Wish I could’ve watched it all live/in one sitting. Tad seems like a wonderful dude, and I loved when he mentioned the connection a reader feels to an author. I’ve never really thought about it, but it’s fun to consider what it must be like as an author to have strangers come up to you who feel like you’re already friends.
Jimmy, This was one of the best chats/interviews I have seen with an author, in my humble opinion. What a nice guy, filled with wisdom about the craft and reading. I am stealing his idea about writing as a way to organize your thoughts around an area. Much appreciate your time setting these chats up and the work it takes to share with us.
Haha, before I read LotR I read the books by Tad Williams Osten Ard! That's why I still listen to what Tad Williams has to say. Some of his books shaped my youth and personality.
Thanks, Jimmy. I always knew Tad was my kind of author just from the wave of enthusiasm emminating from him. He loves doing what he does. Fascinating guy.
One of my favorite episodes to date! Tad William's is just a spectacular guest. So funny and inciteful. Great job with this one Jimmy. I went out and picked up The War of the Flowers after this episode and have been absolutely loving it so far ♥
This is my first time seeing Tad and he is so nice. I’m more excited to pick up one his books after hearing all the influences and things mentioned about them.
What a beautiful episode. It made me feel very emotional as well. Memory, Sorrow and Thorn was the first epic fantasy trilogy I completed reading as an adult fantasy reader. To watch this feels like things coming full circle. So many memories, so many anecdotes. Kudos for a great interview. Respect to Mr Williams. 🙏🏽
The beautiful thing about book tube and it's less formal, long form nature is watching a reader/presenter who's long talked about their favorite author, one day instantly develop casual banter and friendship with said author. Just a great thing about the internet in general really. I'll certainly try out Tad soon, probably starting with Tailchaser's Song.
What an absolutely lovely and interesting talk! Awesomely done, Jimmy! I really enjoyed it. Thanks to Tad Williams for agreeing to the interview and thanks, Jimmy, for sharing your talk with us :)
This was a great interview. Your best one yet, Jimmy. I picked up the first trilogy because of you just last year. Tad seems like a real down to earth dude.
@@ReadingAde Someone with some photoshop skills might be able to make some replacement covers. But it does show how little control over things writers have, and Tad is *married to* his publisher.
Wow, Tad Williams seems like such a great guy! Memory Sorrow & Thorn has been on my list for a long time and I've always heard it compared to Tolkien, but hearing Tad talk about the ways it's different from Tolkien made me much more excited to pick it up. Great conversation, guys!
Great part of discussion - try something to read completely different, stretch your preferences, find fresh insights and then maybe you’ll look at things differently. It even helps me in my work. I always try to study other things besides the basics that I’m used to. There’s chances that it would become helpful or just give me more options to do same things or give me source of inspiration to try new direction of work
LOTR and Gormenghast are the GOATs for me. MST was written as an ode to these while simultaneously incorporating the novel elements from Mr Williams' imagination. MST has always been its own thing for me. In The Last King of Osten Ard, it is almost like a conversation with ASOIAF while again incorporating Mr Williams' own worldbuilding. Will be very interested to see what you think of The Last King of Osten Ard - are you planning to start the series in 2023?
1:20:00 His otherworld series was one of the first books I read with a sense of internationalism with other non-eurocetric cultures. I get where he's coming from and he's right, but I feel there's either a bit too.much... "placating the mobs". The great thing about international inspiration is that it allows for more ideas into the great pool of ideas. There's a balancing act though where observation of the culture objectifies it or at very least breaks the immersion. It's like the difference between being happy in a moment and when you are asked if you are happy and the self reflection breaks the emotion.
Fascinating conversation Jimmy! Lord of the Rings without the christian influence sounds very interesting. Another series I'll have to check out someday, thanks!
Thinking of starting memory, sorrow, and thorn soon. I'm trying to do more audiobooks. Does anyone have any thoughts on the audiobooks v. reading physical of these? Sometimes audio can be harder for fantasy because of invented terms and names.
I put down The Dragonbone Chair at around page 350 because nothing really was happening ... People who've read the series; should I give it another go and power through?
@@thefantasynuttwork @avamenefee7029 I have since read the Dragonbone Chair and boy... did that book turn around on my during the second half. Unexpectedly, it is what has now come closest to ASOIAF for me than anything else I've read. Stone of Farewell and To Green Angel Tower are currently on their way to me and I can't wait to continue this story. Thanks for forcing me to power through the slow start!
Interesting bit from Tad about being wary of reading too much of the genre you're writing in, but his explanation makes sense. I have held a similar view myself, but instead of avoiding the genre it's structured story writing advice. When it comes to things like writing techniques and lessons on the English language/grammar itself, I'll gladly take those. Those are necessary tools. But I think when it comes to actually conceptualizing a story, I would much rather go with my gut and my vast array of exposure to stories of every medium throughout my life, to limit what Tad would call an "incestuous" story that is just an imitator. I'm glad to see an established author express a sentiment that follows similar logic even if it's not the exact same view.
@@thefantasynuttwork I could never avoid reading fantasy and horror (which is what I've dabbled in) haha so I definitely stand more in the camp of reading everything. Just gotta be wary I guess.
