Running Water Lines to the Barn and Garden

In order to run a waterline to the barn and out to the drip lines in our berry patch, I rented a ditcher from town and started digging. I decided I might as well also install a new hose bibb in the grass area in front of the barn while I was at it. With the trenches dug, I started glueing and laying down 3/4" pvc pipe. I cut bases to enclose all the irrigation boxes, we've learned that if you don't do this that moles and gophers will fill them up with dirt. I attached the water line to the barn and installed some valves for the drip lines. I used Aquor's freeze proof valves next to the garden and on the shed, so I won't have to be worrying about pipes freezing in the winter months. I also installed some hose reels next to them, which I've always thought are really convenient. We're ready for some garden irrigation around here now!

He's probably in a Chernozem belt. You can create your own (sort of) by letting your field go wild each year, then plow it. Keep doing it for 10 years or so, you'll get your super soil.

Great video! The upside down cover at the end made me laugh... CNC milled mounting plate and upside down valve. Once I saw the inside and realized it was dependant on the orientation of the right angle on the interior, it made sense again.

That's an awfully brave move to glue and bury all those lines without pressuring them first! I always pressured lines before burying because having to dig up a line that failed sucks bigtime!

Great Project that you executed very well. No concerns at all. Your 4" water main damage was lucky that you weren't showered/drenched. My only damage when I first started with a Ditcher was a 3" Copper service that I encountered. It was a main line into a hospital but I raised the blade after hitting it. Thankfully the teeth were blunt and not sharp. No damage just a dent. Stay Safe.......

The water line you insulated with spray foam could potentially be a termite highway you'd never see until they'd eaten half the building. If you have termites in your area, think about a way to block them from coming through there. I'm honestly not sure what the best method would be, perhaps stuff with stainless steel wool near the top? Anything to make a barrier for them. Great video!

I've had a number of those "stainless" PEX crimp fittings let go after around 10 years due to corrosion. I highly recommend never walling them in so you can keep an eye on them. Any sign of rust or efflorescence, and they should be replaced to prevent a flood.

A smidge more expensive, but not by much if you find a deal (like 10 pieces for price of 8 which happens, at least here in Europe, i always keep an eye out for stuff like that) would be using electrical boxes. Advantage to them vs purpose build irrigation is that they are made from glass reinforced plastic (cause fires) and they are made to take full winter brunt, to protect the electrics inside. Added to that, that they are almost never pre-cut and require you to punch out or cut a hole, that reduces the work you have to do and materials used.
