Thank you so much! I was looking for a good way to hang my chicken feeders so it’s adjustable. Invaluable knowledge I will keep forever and teach my kids. To some it may be just a knot but when you never knew how to tie one properly, this is game changing.
Best video on a Slip Knot. This appears to be the simplest way to tie the slip knot. Thank You! So many videos on how to tie a knot but not many videos on the knots with an object attached.
You saved me! I have been looking for an hour on how to tie this knot. I was asked to fix a friends bracelet that used this knot. I've been looking at jewelry knot videos so imagine my surprise to find your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Literally the best knot ever devised. Learn it folks, I can't begin to tell you how much stuff you can use it for and so so simple. It Synches up. Exp. Tie scaffold knot at each end of a 4 foot rope and now you can run each loop through 10 hockey sticks (at end). Keep loops synched at both ends and now you can sling the middle length of rope (that connects to both ends) over your shoulder and carry your hockey sticks around.
It’s a good night thank you. I am a scaffolder in Canada and we love using that knot even though we’re trained not to use it. We’re not allowed do use slipknot. We have to use bowline, Timberhitch or clove hitch with a half inch on it.
You can call it what you like but I know it as the “Centauri knot “ also known as “Drop liners knot” as seen in many fishing knot books. It is a great knot that retains most of the lines breaking strength and can be tied in light line and very heavy monofilament line , fluorocarbon and braided cord. I use more turns in light line and less turns in heavy (say 150lb fluorocarbon leader).
Thanks for the info. I didn't understand most of what you wrote though. (Too many jargon words). But it looks interesting. Any relation to Alpha Centauri??
nicely done and explained. As the self-appointed president of the knot dummies club of America, I sincerely thank you for your contribution. Simplicity is beautiful.
My grandfather was a merchant marine, & he taught me lots of knots, by the time I was 10...the bowline being the favorite of them all, but this "sail slip-knot",( that you call a scaffold knot)...he showed me to lay my finger next to the rope & wrap around it and the other rope. then to push my finger tip out with the rope tip. He said, when your aboard ship in the wind, you don't loose your place. He said, "Man-boy"...if you can tie good knots, you'll have a good reputation! ...pass on what you have learned.
Here you go. "The Scaffold Knot makes a sturdy loop that slides like a noose to fit snugly around a bar, rail or other object. It may be protected against wear due to chafing by the insertion of a lining called a thimble, creating what sailors refer to as a "hard eye"."
It's actually called a cats paw. And it's also extremely effective and easy to use this knot for tieing kunny bags full of rights. So I can see how someone could call it the scaffold knot. However a clove hitch is much faster to tie and more effective for rigging tubes. Just gotta remember a haft hitch at the top and your flying
Strange,I make a very similar knot but after making the loops I put the bitter end under the loops toward the main bend as opposed to away from the main bend.Makes a slip knot as well but don't even know if it has a name!Hope I made sense!
THANK you sooooooo much for this Diy tutorial this is my second time coming back to this vid and it works like a charm every time, thanks so much and keep going, Merry Christmas
I prefer calling it a double overhand noose, because its a noose tied with a double overhand knot. The double overhand knot mostly dresses itself this as you tighten it. This way you don't have to carefully pinch the first coil in place and then try to thread tag end through the coils.
It brings me to my scout days. Learning to tie people up is a useful skill to have. My partner definitely likes it. She wanted to try it when she heard I had been a scout. I thought it was the wine talking at first. A week later she had bought a special swing and the right rope for the job. She's full of surprises.
so that last wrap nearest the loop dont end up slipping inside through the previous wraps an messing it up or does it depend on rope thickness and quality ?
Thank You for the video. Is this a secure knot for hanging stuff like stained glass suncatchers? This will make my life so easy. Clients usually ask to shorten or lengthen ropes during flea events and it's so time consuming to change the rope for them. I can save a lot of time and effort now.
Glad to help out :) It was commonly used on sailing, so it's definitely a strong and reliable knot. You can also insert a thimble lining in the eye so it protect the rope from damage depending on what someone hangs your sun catchers on.
I'm not sure why I ended up on this video, but actually this knot is also used in climbing/caving as a main attachment point. It's usually referred to as a half double fisherman or just as a double overhand on itself. It's very secure. You can make it triple if you're worried of slippage, depending on the type of cord you're using.
This is an interesting method, it is not the standard slip knot which is just a variation on an overhand knot with a bight through. This uses a fishermans knot to tie it.
+Jules Bartow The Scaffold knot has always been known as a strong reliable knot. The least favoured out of the three would be the Buntline knot due its tendency to jam under heavy loads.
@DH From Ashley book of knots. The scaffold knot is knot number 409 - "It goes under various names such as the barrel knot, double fisherman's knot, grapevine knot and poachers knot. It is a noose knot and a hitching knot which makes a terminal loop. If tied correctly it is a strong and secure knot, suitable for climbing."
@DH It says two scaffold knots tied opposing each other to form a jam knot is called a grapevine knot. Now put on your big boy pants and go look up grapevine knot. I'll give you a small hint. It's a double fisherman's knot.
