Lovely version. There are several versions of this ballad in English, and the story line is quite similiar. Binnorie, the Cruel Sister, and many other variants. Possibly of Scottish origin. I believe there are also German variants. In the English versions the eldest, dark, sister also drowns the younger in the mill dam. The body is then found by the miller who steals her gold ring while she may still be alive, then pushes her back in the water. In the end the miller is burned on a mountain and the older sister is hanged. Rough justice!
I just looked up the translation to the song because I don't know Swedish. But Garmarna is one of my motives to learn the language. I did the best I could. It really is an amazing song though.
@@dangercat9188 I'm Swedish, and the translation is decent, but it has lost much of the poetic meanings. In Swedish the lyrics are very poetic, and in the English translation not so much. The translation is too literal. For example, the phrase "Våller i mig den tungan" that keeps repeating is translated to "Thou are calling my with that tongue". It translates to something like that LITERALLY, but that's not really what it means in Swedish. In Swedish it means something like "Your words/tongue will bring me/cause (trouble)", but it's said in a poetic way, with the order of words kinda shuffled so something like "Your words/tongue (trouble) will bring/cause me". The word "trouble" isn't even there in Swedish, it's an incomplete sentence in Swedish, but it's implied from the context since "våller" in Swedish means to be the cause of something negative. Also, when someone causes someone else trouble with their tongue in old Swedish folktales, there's often magic involved. Definitely not an easy song to translate lol... Garmarnas lyrics, which are very often based on old folktales and songs, are quite often hard to understand even for native Swedish speakers.
