Your demonstration of the randomizer mode and remonstration of retail shortcoming helped me a lot. I was going to get retail, but was able to get the KS edition direct from Mantic last year right before lockdown froze international shipping. The new expansion Kickstarter seems to focus on injecting some variation to the pre-existing case files and randomizer mode. Even the story expansion provides a video game-style multi-floor (endgame) dungeon to run. Unfortunately they dont seem to add more character-specific Doom cards for the existing heroes. I'm getting back into hobby of painting miniatures and painting of all of Hellboy is my current, ambitious project lol.

I’ve played solo about 5 times. Always with two agents. It can get hard with only two. I think I’ve won twice. Three agents might be best, but I like playing these games with two, and don’t care too much about loosing. I like to use the cards to generate random scenarios.
After 2 years do you still not recommend the base game? I do appreciate a smaller box of board game goodies but is it too stripped down? Looks like some great fun!

@@TheDungeonDive Kinda, but very difficult game to review. I had to play it more to validate the balance between its strenghts and weaknesses. + Sense of exploraton of the case file and the boss battle - most of the time the scenarios end in a very anticlimactic way: End confrontation almost unbeatable or easy win in a few turns. The sweet spot seems to be a rare case because of the overall swingyness of the game. + Dice system and push-your-luck tug of war make rolling the dice exciting - The blue die is so swingy that there is almost a binary outcome: A very effective roll or just garbage. ;) + The feel of difference and strengths of the different heroes. - In somce confrontations the balance is totally off. Liz killed a boss with 6 actions and the rest of the heroes do nothing at all. And a few more aspects...some cool strenghts and some almost game breaking flaws. But overall interesting and we will see where it stand at the end of the year. Of course not as good as Lost Tomb, Sword & Sorcery or even the marvelous (and mindblowing) Planet Apocalpyse. ;) BTW: Have you seen the campaign mode? The one negative I do agree with is that sometimes the cases feel anticlimactic. I've heard of the campaign mode, but have not checked it out. For me it's just about the most perfect one-and-done game, especially with the make-your-own scenario cards, that I really can't imagine playing it as a campaign.
@@TheDungeonDive True, but even with the best team play some confrontations are just completetly off balance (exploring the whole map wiht extra activations and Machine Gunnars etc.).

It's actually quite easy. The tutorial mission walks you through most of the game, and the rule book is well written. It's on the easier side for these kinds of games.

Not the best, for sure. Especially with all the art available for the comics.

Definitely should. In my top 50, designed by a designer who made a game in my top 10.
Awesome game if you have everything, very cool if you have at least the KS edition, mediocre in content if you have only the retail box.
Think I’m going for skull tales full sale instead much prefer the theme don’t have a pirate game in my collection yet!
