  • There are three species of glowspot roaches in the hobby. This video is of Lucihormetica subcincta, the original "glowspot cockroach," and the oldest one to be kept as a pet. In the natureal setting, the two yellow spots on the pronotum of males are said to be bioluminescent. This does not happen in captivity, however. Even still, these roaches are appreciated for their very unique appearance. Males and females are both quite attractive and there is a dimorphism (difference in appearance) between the two sexes. In that sense, it's much like having two different looking roaches in one colony, not to mention the nymphs which also look like distinct. As roaches go, these are one of the best for handling. Much like hissing cockroaches, they don't evade you when you try to pick them up or try to scramble off your hand. They are known for being very slow growing but they are also long-lived at 3+ years. Thanks to Andrew Barell from andrewbarell.com for his smooth edits and animations in this video!

That mark in the center of their forehead is absolutely a W for Wisconsin.

These roaches are so beautiful. You are getting me so interested in pet bugs. I love my hissers & blue death feigning beetles you sent me. I know I will be buying more. Thank you for the nice videos. You do a great job showing different cute bugs.

One of the greatest pleasures of being in the online bug hobby is seeing new people come into it with their eyes and minds wide open to the diversity and beauty of bugs. Thank you, Judy!

A bit smaller than most hissers but they make up for it with colors and a glossy shine!

*headlights. There are roaches that are "headlamps." Not the same.

Have you tried that mushroom that makes them glow? I've read a few people on Arachnoboards have used it, but it would be nice to know it's not gonna murder mine.
Also: mine don't have those stripes yours have. Yours look almost like Halloween Hissers in coloration and mine are like straight mahogony. Could I have that **other** species of lucihormetica?
Lastly: what is bug jelly and where does one acquire it? All the shows I've been to I've acquired plenty of bugs, but the only jelly is water crystals.

I have not seen any confirmation that feeding that commonly available fungus will produce the effect in these, nor am I really 100% convinced that this species of Lucihormetica really does it in nature, but it's been a point of confusion for people for well over a decade now. Yours are probably L. verrucosa (warty glowspots) and I have made a video of that similar (and mahogany) species to upload here soon. The jelly cups are available on my website. It's a sugary treat and source of hydration that they love. There are a variety of brands and sources, and some of the ones produced specifically for the beetle hobby in Asia contain amino acids that promote healthy beetles/reproduction.

Unfortunately, no and probably this species does not do it in nature either.
