    I love vinegaroons. I have a female named miss Vinny. She's spoiled. She has a 10 gallon tank with lots of hiding spots. She sleeps all day and comes out around 9 pm like clockwork. She doesn't burrow, but she makes little nests to bask in. Her main house is a little coconut shell she hides under. Some nights she gets feisty and tries to climb up the tank with no effort. I'll take her out carefully and let her safely run around and explore. She's a sweet little vinegaroon. 5 years old.

    I use water bites (which is basically a water gelatin) for my vinegaroon, which I pour into a good-sized low-sided food container near a heat/light source. I've noticed that since I put it in her enclosure, she spends at least 90% of her time sitting on top of the water bites. Just curious as to if there's a reason for that.
    Mine doesn't dig. Though I have areas she could use as a burrow, she spent most of her time sunning on the rock next to her heat source (until I put the water bites in there), and I've noticed that since she gets food regularly (I feed her about six crickets a month, at two-week intervals), she's not as much of an opportunistic eater. Sometimes the crickets will stay in her cage for weeks at a time before she eats them.
    But I AM interested as to why she likes to spend the majority of her time in her water bowl...

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace 3 роки тому +7

      They are nocturnal in nature and live in burrows for most of the year, venturing out when it's bug season and then they gorge themselves. Yours is living in the Ritz Carlton of tanks and so it's just out there eating and basking and chillin in the water bites like it's poolside.

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace 5 років тому +2

      There does seem to be some variation in their interest in doing that. Perhaps the day/night cycle in the home with artificial lighting is factoring in, or temperature. I really have no idea why one on a shelf can go down and then another in a nearby tank doesn't. I think a lot of people keep them on shallow substrates where they don't have the option and so there isn't as much data on it as their could be. But maybe the answer is out there somewhere. I had heard you mention it in one of your great videos, recently. It's not as easy to consume content from others and learn like we used to. Producing content is very time consuming, eh? Probably 99% of everything I've learned the past decade was passed back on to me from customers. And of course I don't mind that at all! ;)
      Thanks Rus! And by the way, I'm totally excited to see what happens with your orange titan!

    • @Aquarimax

      Bugs In Cyberspace Good points Peter, I should probably deepen the substrate and maybe put them in a dark place to see if I can induce hibernation.
      I love the fact that we can all learn from each other in this hobby. 😊 Oh, and guess what? I found another orange Titan! I hope they’re not just Spanish oranges that somehow got I to the enclosure, though that seems unlikely. Time will tell...

      Mine also had a huge abdomen when I first got him, but I'm pretty sure he's a dude unfortunately, judging by his underside. Seems like the sellers weren't as good at sexing them as they came off as. When they're not sexually mature, I don't think you should rely on abdomen size to determine if it's male or female. Had to learn that the hard way...😩

    I used to be utterly terrified of these animals when I was younger. I'd say it was my least favorite animal for quite some time, but that changed two years ago when my zoology professor brought one into the lab. A few of us got to hold it, and I figured I'd be adventurous and try anyways. What surprised me was how "normal" its legs felt. I was expecting cold, sharp pincers, but it wasn't at all like that. I wouldn't call it soft, but no worse than a lizard's. It was also a very mellow creature, really no different from any other vertebrate of the same size. That interaction really changed how I felt about them, and if I ever do decide to get a pet arachnid, this is at the top of my list.

Last night I dispatched a large female dubia with the long black feeding tongues that I got a while back from Amazon. I crushed the head then I crushed the body until that white pus oozed out. To make it easier for him, I just feed him pre-killed now. He has a hard time getting a good grip on his prey since he only has one functioning pedipalp, so I think it's overall better to feed him pre-killed. Good thing these scavengers eat everything. @@clamskaboo5120 2 inches can mean a lot of different things depending on where the measurement starts and ends, really. And so I can't say whether yours is mature or not on that basis. It really is just a function of them being mature specimens. If yours looks the size of the ones on my hand, then it is probably mature too. Of course, it helps to have a range of sizes on hand to know what's what. ;)

    Haha, of all the badass bugs in the world, Vinegaroon is among the top of my list.
    You think Centipedes are efficient fighters? They're amateurs comparing to Vinegaroons.
    Watch this clip to the end and you'll know what I mean.
