- Pete's first visit to Late Night with David Letterman during his promotion for the White City album, Nov. 12, 1985. Sorry that Pete didn't feel like playing anything but it's a fun interview showing what he was thinking before he gave in again and let The Who reunite.

34 years later and he’s still going strong. Just saw him play in Detroit tonight. Amazing :)
Yep good show at LCA. He can still bring it.
Can’t say the same for late night tv which has gone total left wing Democrat puke. 🤮And I’m being nice because You tube has done the same and monitors comments.
@@thelastrebelshow1627 boo hoo
@@acerjuglans383 Your mothers here .

@@acerjuglans383 It is very boo hoo. Soon our entire nation will boo hoo. We all see the writing on the wall.
One of rock's greatest and most thoughtful songwriters. Won't Get Fooled Again is the greatest rock anthem ever.
Agreed in full. "Won't..." is the anthem of my youth which to this day remains my all time favorite rock piece. But as for albums, Quodrophenia towers above all others.
Yeah, but, it wasn't true. We always do.
Same here Jangle. As an overall piece, that is tops for me as well. Keith at his absolute best
yes to all that , not massive on Won't Get Fooled Again, I would rather, 5.15 , he is so right about that bitch Thatcher.
@@Jangle2007 same here... and I was born 1 year after this interview
No doubt that many people from my generation (pun intended) and from the next to come will feel the same way
Pete's always entertaining, whether on stage or in interviews. He's a great conversationalist!
He is one of the most articulate people and has such a way with words I could listen to him just bring interviewed all day
Indeed
PETE TOWNSHEND MUSICAL GENIUS nothing more to be said
Truth
Just banging on my own piano
I read Horses Neck while at school. I read it again thirty yeas later and loved it just as much. That's rare, for a novel or poetry to have a equal impact as a mature adult as it did as a teenager, albeit for a few different reasons.
It doesn't matter how many times I've seen Pete's nose, it never ceases to amaze me.
Lol you serious?😅
One of the great, greats of the rock era. Love you Pete. You got my respect in spades!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pete has been my musical idol since '73. The man is super interesting and inciteful to listen to. When it comes to great rock and roll he's the man. Long Live Rock!
Dave really acknowledged his band and all musicians in a very respectful way. props.
A genius of our time - as a songwriter, musician, performer, and innovator. Thoughtful and insightful, Townshend has always understood, perhaps better than anyone else, the capacity for music to create deep connections with the audience and to be a transformative force in the world.
Very well said and I agree completely. The world could use his life house project right now. The simple meaning of a note in a song. Expresses that joy you feel when experiencing music. It's otherworldly. He totally gets it and is able to articulate it
Amen
Remarkable... The man's clearly a genius - had he gone another route, he might not have become a mega-star, but he'd leave a mark on any endeavor he chose, and more than a few people would know his name...
👍🏻
Dave is such a pro when it comes to keeping up with guys as smart and enigmatic as Pete. Pete's one of the best ever and deserves all the adulation he gets in the US.
Yes Dave is a phenomenal interviewer. My dream was to be a music journalist but I would be very intimidated to interview a man as brilliant as Pete
Although i am certainly not a virtuoso guitarist and I respect musicians with a high level of technical skill , I am in awe of people like Pete who can compose and arrange brilliant songs , one after another . Also, Pete writes all the lyrics which is another skill set altogether and puts him in a category that damn few can claim admission to
Pete is a spirit guide and life would be empty glass without his influence. Saved my soul..
Well put.
I remember watching this interview live. Still think about it from time to time and glad it made it to UA-cam. My VHS copy is buried somewhere.
I was 14 yrs old in 1968 when I saw the Who ( $7.50 Canadian) - they where phenomenal : )
Probably my favorite songwriter ever. Tommy to this day still hits me in the feels. It truly is a musical experience/adventure imho.💯
Yes and that's just a smothering of what he has done in his life. He just released a new single the name of it is on the tip of my tongue but it's really good. His music touches me in so many ways like nobody elses
White City is my absolute face of all his solo albums.... & I adore them all!
Haha, spell check changed fave to face....I'm the face , baby, is that clear?
It's as though Spell Check had some knowledge that "Face The Face" was a single off the album, and your use of the word "fave" simply sent it hurtling toward the inevitable 🤔
In the top 5 of the greatest songwriters ever.
In my top 3. Townshend is absolutely brilliant. Genius songwriter and guitarist.
I’m curious Who (ah see what I did there) your top 5 are. In no particular order: Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan. If you put John and Paul together, then maybe you could throw in one more. Jagger maybe. I know I’m leaving everybody post 60’s out but I have yet to hear anything that was on par with the 60’s.
@@allbottledup9513 Well for.me its The Who, George Harrison and Ringo (tied) as well as together with The Beatles, The Tubes (early is better), Tina Turner, GnR, Ann Wilson, the Coop and Donovan. Those are my Top 10 musicos.
Great lists to those who commented. Hmm don't know about my top five but Pete is way up there George Harrison definitely. Lennon Mc Cartney Ray Davies Leon Russell Bowie too many to mention and yes to Dylan and Dino an. Tom Petty no slouch either Bob Seger Neil Diamond Willie Nelson Chrissy Hynde I could go on and on
It's 2022 and Pete and Roger are in their 70s. They just started another tour playing to large audiences.
I waited on John Entwhistle and Simon Phillips when they were touring in '88. They came into our restaurant, unfortunately without Pete and Roger. Entwhistle autographed my "Live at Leeds" album, quite a thrill.
Bee Kay nice chap?
Wow!! Both are beyond phenomenal musicians!!
Rip Entwhistle.... I don't know if it's true but I heard he died partying with hookers or groupies or whatever .
@@gardensofthegods Sad but somewhat true, the autopsy report has been on the internet. Entwistle died in his sleep in his hotel room with a groupie the night before a concert tour. A small amount of cocaine was found in his system. This aggravated an existing heart condition, aortic aneurysm I believe. He didn't die of an overdose per se. But indulging in drinking, smoking, cocaine when you have a heart condition, if you are aware of it, speaks for itself. He passed long ago, but as with Moon, I wish he'd been able to overcome the addictions.
@@D13fs yeah thank you for that info... yeah , too many people in the industry getting caught up in all kinds of addictions... I never really met an addict who was actually having fun... they always end up getting sick of having to constantly look for that next High . I'm glad I'm Eminem was one of the smart ones who was able to deal with his drug and booze addiction.
I just saw him in an interview ( Sway and Eminem / kamikaze interview ) and he looks good , really healthy for 48 . I don't think he got any filler injections or any of that nonsense like Keanu Reeves and other high-profile men .
Glad to stumble upon the old Letterman clips!
Pete is such an interesting person. He’s so honest and real.
Pete & Dave are just lovely & gracious here. Thank you for this extremely special upload. ✌
Pete, the Wild man of Rock and Roll. If he rates Simon Phillips as a drummer he must be a good guy !
White City is a great great great work
Vastly under-rated. I think I can probably recite all the lyrics.
Don't forget about Psychoderelict.
I played that album out my freshman year of college. Played it walking between classes a lot.
@@wr70beh Cool! I played it throughout my senior year of college. Really helped me internally.
White City: A Novel was my saving grace in 1985 after my parents died 4 months apart. I remember that time well....and also the whole 80's scene helped me in dealing.
I had a crush on Pete when I was like 15.
Then I learned the meaning of "Rough Boys"
I still love that song anyway. My broken heart mended.
😁🎸
Who doesn't if they are honest have a crush on Pete (and R)?
That's Steve Jordan on drums, he's playing now with The Rolling Stones.
He sure can say some hilarious things on stage!!
In college I played drums in a power trio "pizza band" and we took that live version of Bargain and used it as our template for the song live. At the time it was the only version we had ever heard and man that was a show stopper of a song. You could really chew into it live and people responed to it with big round eyes. Pretty sure I got laid a couple of times just because of that songs ending. I had Keith's licks down perfect as I was obsessed with his playing at the time and nailed it pat.
i clearly remember watching this when it was first broadcast.....my god i feel old!
Dude, yer old and in the way...
Oh how I love you, Pete :D
Get in line..lol.😉
Concert next year! 2024!!! He made peace with it on some level:)
Love you Pete! Always.
Thanks for that, I thought it was one of those two albums that I had originally heard those two songs but as I said memory fades. I may actually still have Who's Missing and Two's Missing boxed away with some other stuff I haven't seen in decades. Pretty sure I didn't throw them away but my Mom might have back in the day, not sure. Who's Missing has a stellar live version of Bargain that just kills, wish they put out an album of that entire show as the sound quality of the recording was tops.
Love that he considers Springsteen his friend. Two of my favorite songwriters. (Pete number one, of course.)
God I love the Who.
Ernest Kinas crazy to think how much they got me through when I was a kid
"The Last Time" and "Under My Thumb" were on the 1987 Two's Missing LP. That was their first official U.S. release. In the U.K., after the single, "The Last Time" was on the Direct Hits compilation and "Under My Thumb" was on Rarities.
Peter he is my favourite person
I enjoyed reading his biography years ago!
Glad I saw them couple times - 2002 in MSG in NY and at the NOLA Jazz Fest in 2015. Mom talked with Pete about their mutual love of Meher Baba backstage at Berkeley in 1970; no kidding!
Pete must have dug that!
Pete is the best writer in R&R !
Pete Townshend actually seemed to care about England and the British people. I see it in a lot of his songs and interviews. On a different note, when Letterman was on NBC he had one of the best shows on TV. I miss it.
I think Pete was a true socialist. Not a Champagne one. He never flaunted his wealth unlike other successful rock stars.
True, one of his solo lps has a song on it called "English Boy". He has written that he could never even consider living anywhere else, even though some of his peers in rock have done so. Keith Moon actually lived in California for a spell.
@@markfernandes9715 He also is kind enough to have hosted fans, including apparently the horrid Geoff Guiliano. Pete along with a few other big English rockers of the time.
adorable 😄
he's so adorable hahah
Wow, back in 1985 you could completely "forget: to talk about the guest's book he came on to promote!!
Dave was like that no matter the year. he'd always have real conversations
Effing love you, Pete!!!
See how he recites the greats the miles and the mingusus of the world...he wrote great music bcuz he listened to the greats.......its no mistake he became so prolific...he was bred to be
Which ever path he would have chosen, I do believe he would've had success! Intelligent creative mind
Big fan
I love when Dave leans over to talk to Pete before the break and Pete starts grooving to Substitute. XD 5:48
👍🏻lean move is played out
These Sell Out songs were ever performed live: Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand, I Can See For Miles, Relax and Tattoo. Out of those, Relax performed live at the Fillmore East is my favourite. But I agree with you, The Who Sell Out is a great album, and it's a shame they didn't perform more of those songs live. I would have loved to hear Melancholia performed live, for instance...
All you have to do is go on here and look up the who live at Fillmore East 1968 they play all those songs pre-tommy. There is a show on UA-cam from the day MLK was killed in april 1968. MLK means Martin Luther King.
The expanded cd version of live at leeds features a nice take of tattoo. Even better than the studio version, imo.
The best of the best.
My left ear loved it
So did his lol
We got to face the face, judge the judge! Watch the flicks.
Leathermans band did a great job with substitute
Yes it is!
“Music first, has to be fun.”
Damn.
No mere mortal is Pete Townshend. Genius.
And the Pete goes on.....
wow!
Simon Phillips drums for Toto in their 25th Anniversary concert in Amsterdam, 2003 if you want to see him drumming.
Bruce . . . from long, long time.
+Andre R. Newcomb Springsteen...I just don't get it!!!!!
If you look around, someone may have posted The Who doing "Relax" from the 1968 Fillmore East bootleg.
Of course Under My Thumb wasn't on the original Odds and Sods album that was released in 1974 which was a single album format. John said there were enough songs for a double album at the time so I guess they must have added the rest by the time CD's allowed for more songs to be applied to the format. The other Stones song The Who recorded was "The Last Time" which is on UA-cam and isn't too bad.
Dave: "Yeah!!!"
I FUCKING LOVE PETE XD
I'm not sure about that, I used to have two albums of unreleased stuff called "Who's Missing" and "Two's Missing" and it's been so long I can't remember if that's where I heard the two in the first place, sorry about that. Memory is a terrible thing lol.
empty glass was awesome
Its my personal fave of Pete's solo LPs. "Psychoderelict" and "Chinese Eyes" winning the silver and bronze medals.
Maybe Pete should have his own podcast and then he could talk about anything he wants whether books or interviews or anything . I wonder what Pete would say about England now ... England isn't really anyone anymore
He still lives in England, not too far from the likes of Paul McCartney and Jimmy Page, so he must be okay with it.
It woud be interesting to hear his take on Brexit, and the split within the royal family.
Simon philips one of thje best drummers. And Pete got something about misery. About liking it or getting used to it. I love Pete Townshend. I ended up with a preacher full of lies and hate, i seem to scare him a little so he showed me to the golden gate. Can you see the real me?
I think he had certain childhood traumas, and also had battled addiction later on. Probably anything he went through in this time of his life was pretty tame compared to what he had experienced beforehand.
interesting music choice from Paul Schaffer(sp?) at the closing of the interview. do you think he's aware the who-> covered under my thumb when keef and mick were arrested for possession of some weed?
macaroni8cheese probably.
A lot of people don't know that in the early days when the Rolling Stones were in jail or some such thing The Who recorded a couple of stones tunes. I think Under My Thumb was actually one of them. It's been so long I can't remember the other one, not even sure it was Thumb but they did record two tracks.
"The Last Time" was the other song they recorded, in order to keep their peers' music in the public eye. Pretty generous of them, I think.
@@wylier Moonie even protested in front of the courthouse!
Steve Jordan on drums?

TS Elliott had a influence on Ezra Pound who influenced the Beats; Kerouac, Kesey, who influenced Grateful Dead who influenced Pete Townsend etc.
Good interview! He said, "MACHINE" the rock and roll machine and all its trolls! 😲🤑😄🤣😣🤡👽🤠
1985….. 😎
and i can see for miles
letterman: the rem of talk.
Well at least Letterman was respectful of him. That's a relief. I just finished Pete's autobiography and that makes this even more interesting. He often refers to himself as a "jumping bean" in the book. Now I see it wasn't just on the rock stage.
After reading Pete's and Roger's bio, I think a lot of us who are creatively inclined can relate to Rog's and Pete's accidentproneness, competitiveness and good natured stubbornness, as well as Pete's strange combination of striving for perfection and occasional selfdoubt. There is a weird adorableness to honestly admitting those things along with the insecurity creative people have.
I love Pete! Wish he would go on Howard Stern for a proper interview!
~ He was booked on Stern's broadcast and Howard got into the arrest (before the book came out) and Townshend walked off.
Why'd Dave give Pete such short time. I would've cut somebody--or not even booked them in the first place. This was crazy brief. Thank God for the Charlie Rose Show.
Steve Jordan drums. Where is he now…
He shoulda just did the whole show interviewing Pete. Like his next guests were anywhere near as important or interesting.....
I think his silly act came off better when he was backing up Moon. 😸
Why is Pete Townshend being pushed everytime I scroll UA-cam? Any one noticed this? Thanks
ahhhhh Back when popular music had soul
0:55 lmao.
Why Under my Thumb? What is that song doing there?
Raul Soriano Recoreded with “The Last Time” by The Who as a gesture of support for Mick Jagger and Keith Richards who were arrested on drug charges.
he edits books, mate...
OK there were some issues with Rodger in the very beginning but he definitely got a long with Keith and after touring for 20 years also got along with Rodger, otherwise he would have pulled out much earlier...
No "D" in ROGER.
In the late 1970s the Who were without question the biggest band in the world, it was absolute Whomania, in my opinion even bigger than Beatlemania where the frenzy was so bad that 11 people in Ohio lost their lives in a stampede to see them and to me it was all because of two movies: The Kids are alright and Quadrophenia. Really shows the power of cinema not to mention great songwriting.
Ka Boom
No. I love, love, love The Who but they were never as big as The Beatles.
Zep was bigger
Yeah bro🤪🤪🤪you are high if you think The Who ever came close to the cultural significance of the Beatles from 63-70
You are right, 1979 was their year, even tho they were still hurting from the loss of Keith. You might like the book "Are the kids all right?" which came out in the early 80s. It's out of print, but I found a copy in a second-hand bookshop. It's an in-depth chronicle of the ill-fated Cincinnatti concert, and rock culture at that point in time.
@@richieboy6825 - I'm not saying the Who were better, I'm saying they were more popular. They really were. People weren't killed trying to see the Beatles, but people were killed trying to see the Who. Beatles back in the 1960s weren't as popular as you think. By 1966 they were no longer selling out shows, people were burning their records, and by late 1960s people thought they were too weird and by the 1970s they were considered passe. It wasn't until the double albums, the red and blue greatest hits albums came out in the mid 1970s that people started picking up how great they were. I remember all this, I lived through it. Beatles were popular for a year and by the next year people tired of them
" ..a great drummer named Simon Phillips".. today sounds like "-.. some great spiritual guy named JESUS.."
townshend has the kind of dismissive attitude towards people only a handful of really talented people can allow to have, I wished I knew this in my twenties, you need actual talent to back that attitude, and pete had it and has it in spades
Dismissive? I doubt there's another rock star that ever cared more about regular people and fans more than him. Now, he does have that air about him a bit, but I wouldn't call him dismissive. Specially not of the fans. Now Dave? He should be treated dismissively , he was a dick.
juan altredo he isn’t like that anymore I’ve noticed which is a good thing he comes off like a bit of an ass here
@@BubbaZen10 He engages with the Late Night band then dismisses them as stupid at the start of the interview. Failed joke I guess. He then compliments them. Twisted.
He was dismissing all musicians as stupid, sarcastically, after jokingly demonstrating that when the drummer hit he would compulsively leap in time- so it was humor aimed at himself more than them.
@@BubbaZen10 Pete actually responds to his fan's letters from time to time.
By 85 in Britain Unions were destroyed unemployment was soaring because The Tories didn't believe in public spending to create jobs and crime and drug addiction in industrial areas increased rapidly as a result. It was the idea that large economic expansion is somehow to the benefit of everyone which was used as an excuse for this. I think that's what he's talking about
Anton sure has a tan here LOL
Townshend looks like Will Self here...
He is a modern Day Beethoven or Bach...

He looks like Adrian Belew here..
for me looks like Phil Collins here
