  • Are you wondering if YOU should get one of the new Apple M1 Macs? Are they REALLY as good as what others are saying on UA-cam? Are you thinking about maybe holding out for the next generation of M1 chips (such as the M1X)
    In this video, I go over my HONEST hands-on review of these (the Mac Mini and MacBook Air) M1 Macs after three months of usage and answer some common questions or concerns that you may have (based on my personal experience).
    As a software developer (C#, PHP, Python, and GoLang), I also discuss in this video the software compatibility and my initial concerns, and how I get around issues such as how I build and run x86 docker containers remotely.

      @@TheBearTechWe actually already have a 8Gb M1 in the house (the wife's) but I'm still running on a Dell as my primary machine due to my work needs (Windows ecosystem). That being said I was so impressed with her machine I'm seriously contemplating getting one myself as my primary laptop. I just can't decide over a Chromebook vs Macbook tbh. Long term the Mac seems the way to go in terms of value for money and being able to run a lot more useful apps/programs. Again I don't "need" to buy it right now, I can wait but your point about the newer ones being more expensive also made me rethink would I actually need a 14" or would the Air do the job being cheaper more portable etc.. and being honest it'd be fine given my workflow right now.

    Only issue for me is I can't run two monitors off the MacBook lineup. I'm also a software engineer and the device I am currently docking my current MacBook into a CalDigit TS3 Plus dock which projects my environment onto two screen, attaching a keyboard and mouse, etc.
    Sure I could buy a MacBook air and a Mac mini but not that keen to buy both. I quite like my single device workflow

    this was such a great video and exactly the questions I wanted answered. I was wondering about the M1 MacBook Air, as a fan less device which has been proven in tests to run at a slightly higher temperature than the m1 pro, will this affect its long term life span?

    • @TheBearTech

      Thank you Freya - I'm pleased you enjoyed the video :) I can't be too sure on the long term affects on the battery life but given that the tempretures are so much lower than other laptops (both Mac and Windows-based) it's certainly not something that I would ever lose sleep over. Should I still consider buying an M1 mini with 16Gb of ram as of now; in Dec 2021? I am a web dev and software tester.

    My benchmark is: withouth full, certified TB4 support and miniLED - wait. Then, as somebody described below, go for device with max RAM / minimum storage and buy decent external SSD. 8 GB ram enough? Joke! When it comes to waiting. 90s are gone, when by the time one could afford upgrade it was quantum leap in capability. Today, there's NO NEED TO UPGRAGDE unless 2 or 3 generations AT LEAST are skipped. Waiting for M1X at least has several benefits: macOS BigSur will be slightly more stable and patched; M1X (M2 more likely) will perhaps remedy largest deficiency of Apple Silicon - I/O limits. With miniLEDs around the corner and TB4 this is significant qualititive update in last decade. That is worth waiting. If your work depends on having computer NOW - go for it. If you can wait till (realistically) 2022 then wait. With all this chip and logistics supply crisis, Apple's policy of dripfeeding features....

    Bro if I buy the base model for programming than how long it will last in future?

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  3 роки тому +1

      What sort of programming are you doing? What languages etc? Are you using Docker Cotnainers? - The 8GB RAM/256GB base model might be a little too light if you use a ton of Docker Containers and need more storage. The 8GB base model would be just fine (I suspect) if you was using a lightweight IDE/editor like VSCode and for the most part, most languages/stacks such as PHP/Javascript/HTML etc. I would be more concerned however if you wanted to run a load of Docker containers as I feel you would soon run out of storage and RAM. It really depends on your use case. As per the video, I'd recommend you bump the RAM as a minimum to future proof it if nothing else.

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  3 роки тому

      What apps are you referring too? All of my IDE's work perfectly fine (I use the JetBrains suite mainly) but VSCode (a very popular editor/IDE) is now natively supported on the M1 if you was concerned about that. I really wouldn't worry about Rosetta2, it works flawlessly (if your apps aren't M1 native just yet).

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  3 роки тому +1

      @@mahmudsifat2299 I can't speak for every single x86/x64 app out there (as it's impossible for me to test them all ;)) but given the whole reason of why Rossetta 2 was developed (essentially converting x86 instructions (apps) to M1/Apple Silicon), they *should* do, yes. I would recommend researching (eg. Google) any edge cases where this hasn't been the case for some users/apps though but from my personal experience all x86 apps have all worked fine.

    • @TheBearTech
      @TheBearTech  3 роки тому +1

      If you're familiar with vscode, it's similar to that, uses more RAM though, some might say "bloated" but is generally used by people who prefer a more "batteries included out of the box" experience with PHP specific development workflows - such as intelligent auto-complete, one-click clas and codebase navigation etc. I prefer this over the likes of vscode as I don't have to look for specific plugins, test them out and replace when they become depreicated or the plugin developer decides that he or she isn't going to maintain a plugin in future etc.
