When i was young (of the single digits age) at Christmas we were making decorations and writing nice or whacky things on them. I had been playing Rockstar Ate My Hamster on the Speccy and some of the names in the game I found funny, so wrote them on the decorations. Of course, I had no idea what White Trash meant... I thought it was about snow. My dad complained and explained that it wasn't a nice thing to write especially at Christmas, but my mum, seemingly also ignorant said it was fine so the derogatory decorations stayed up. 🤣🤣
The Rent Shop Boys! I was too young at the time to understand that pseudonym (I was around 11 or 12 when I bought this on the Speccy once it came down to a budget price). My knowledge of pop music at the time was patchy at best. I always was quite successful when 'Dorrissey' was in a band. Perhaps the developer was a fan of The Smiths?! I used to get pissed off whenever one of my 'Rock Star(s) die in an orgy' or similar.

Was just thinking of this game the other day. This is one of those games that starts out great and then becomes a drag....especially when you don't make the charts no matter what you do.
Winning is dependant upon a very specific path of conditions. You must do this, you must do that. You barely have enough days to obtain the four gold disks, if you waste a total of around 7 days on unproductive decisions you've already lost. On top of that, it then comes down to pure random luck. If you use an emulator and save the game at any point, each time you reload it from the exact same spot the outcome of the same actions will vary every time. As much as I love it, I must admit that once you win there's no desire to ever play it again. Because by that point, you've learned that you can only play in the one specific way that the computer forces you to do. It's no fun at all, once you master it. The fun is actually in the learning, when the game is fresh out of the box.
@@97channel strangely I found that by using emulation there actually was a 'correct' decision every time - but even by playing technically flawless games each time this way, I could still never get to 4 discs in time? this was a few years ago, but it was definitely the speccy version...
@@CS-mo7xp I can only think that the rom was hacked to remove negative responses to the decisions, such as rock stars dying in the publicity stunts, to give the player maximum chance of winning. Even with that bias, it's still incredibly difficult to get the four discs. I've forgotten some of the delicate science behind it now, but the overall most important tactic is to not let the game waste days. For starters, it seems that some rock star selections just never stand a chance. Bill Colins, forget it. Vastly overpriced, he'll cause trouble just enough to waste too many days. Whereas Sidney Sparkle is cheap, reliable, and very popular. He is the must-have person in any band. Choose brand new equipment for the band, otherwise second-hand or dodgy gear will later cost you a day when the police ring to give you a fine or something. Never practice. It's a day wasting a trap. Just hit gigs right from the off and keep on gigging, stadiums at £10 per night, 7 nights. Every time you make a decision to gig, a day goes by without any productivity. So you need to max out the days every time. Give the most expensive gifts around twice per month. Reject the first two sponsor offers, accept the third. It wastes two days, but the third offer makes your band way more popular in the charts later on. Accept the first record deal, and go to the studio immediately with the highest production values. Release the album and a single, with highest video production values, pull a positive publicity stunt, get straight back into gigging. Kind of ignore the album's progress, but do pay attention to the single. It'll hit the top ten. Whilst it's climbing, leave it be. As soon as it drops a position, release another single. And do this every time, with a positive publicity stunt after each release. It's now down to luck, and not wasting days. That sales bar has to remain as close to its peak as possible for the rest of the year. The discs will steadily light up, and if you do achieve the fourth it'll be with only a few days remaining. It's a very difficult game to win.
@@97channel definitely... a lot of sound advice there. Although I think it might be easier to manage a real rock band and achieve 4 actual platinum discs than do it the speccy hamster way!
@@CS-mo7xp I had the game in the early 90's, and could never get close to beating it. But I loved playing it, and when I got a load of roms on PC, around 2005, I spent several weeks obsessing over it to finally get those four discs. I needed closure.
I had 2 maybe 3, but never got the 4th. Was a pattern to releasing. Each week you are in the singles charts moved you up a spot in the album charts. If you an album but didn’t release a single you would move further away from charting it.

As a kid I got 2-3 discs quite often did get 4 but it was rare, played the Amiga version a few years ago and couldn't even get one. No idea how it worked I could get max cash and packed venues but no discs no idea why.

What an absolute gem this was. My imagination went wild playing this as a kid. One of the few games I’d love to play again
