- Improper drainage around your foundation leads to water leaks and flooding in your basement. Reduce this risk with a downspout and sump dry well system.
In this video I install a downspout/sump dry well to replace the old French drain system at my house. Over the years, this drain had gotten clogged up with muck and silt and didn't drain effectively. This 50-gallon dry well should provide the needed drainage capacity for the downspout and basement sump that drain into it, with the overflow outlet taking care of the excess.

The excavated hole should be three times the volume of the sump well. A 50 gallon sump well requires a hole capable of holding 150 gallons. That means you should have stone surrounding the plastic sump well for about 20 inches out to the excavation's sides. The top hole in the lid is intended as an overflow, not a drain. Fit this with a "pop-up" valve to prevent the sump from becoming contaminated with debris and bugs.

I’m my area that would never perk enough water . You would need to make the hole the size of a school bus full of stone and then it still would overflow
Thanks for sharing your work and your responses! Any concerns about heaving/damage from freezing? I am in Toronto area and looking at this unit, thinking maybe to stack 2 in order to maximize holding power and get below frost line. A bit fuzzy how drywells work in the winter months honestly.
The cutout holes allow you to connect multiple dry wells together via pipe.
Was there existing piping ? Looked like was something you had there already ?
Where's the trench for the sump pump pump drainage hose?
No trench, there's a buried pipe
How many bags of gravel did you use?

Nice video & a great job at editing. I just put in two tanks like yours. The instructions are to dig a 4x4x4 foot deep hole. Yours is smaller than that. It will probably work OK if it doesn't have to dissipate too much water. I dug the hole 4 feet deep, but then I put too much gravel in the bottom so the top is less than the recommended minimum of 8 inches deep. While the directions don't specify it, I put in screws to secure the top to the side walls. I've seen videos of the top being pushed off by the hydrostatic pressure. It would be interesting if you had to do it over again would you change anything? In my case, I would dig the hole deeper than 4 feet, but I was using a backhoe rather than doing it by hand!
Hi Bob, yes, I'd probably also dig a larger hole, and also would want to put another in. The spring after I installed mine, we had an unseasonably large amount of rain that totally inundated my yard. I doubt that even two dry wells could have stopped the yard from flooding, but it would have helped.
Haven't had issues with the top popping off.
This is not criticism, but a question...I thought these dry well systems were meant for channeling water away from the house via a french drain. I didn’t see that part. Is your setup meant to capture water from the low point of your yard?

Unfortunately little dry wells get overwhelmed easily in heavy rains should’ve made that dry well 3 times bigger n maybe it would hold off I had issues in my backyard in heavy rains I went with a 150 ftFrench drain to sump pump system to day light away from house 🏡 n backyard bottom line away from my property it’s been working great in heavy rains or storm’s I don’t see any good by keeping the water 💦 on the property 🤷🏽♂️
In a lot of places, you can't just drain storm runoff at the lot line because it would inundate your neighbor. That's the case with me. Point taken about the size tho, more capacity would be better
When you guys mention bigger “dry well” “3x bigger”. Are you referring to the actual hole that it’s in, & just filling it more deeper & around sides with crushed rock or specifically a bigger container ?
I wouldn't put in in the same hole the old dry well was pick a clean spot
@@GlennFrazeeYT cause if you put it in the old hole the soil will be compacted and the soil will be too dense to drain. The soil will have hard time draining though all ready used soil. That's why he should of dug the hole where the existing pipe is up more so your in virgin ground.

In Ohio it's all sand where I'm at put a double system for septic leach field with 2 55 gal drums and 6 tons of gravel. Cleveland area is all clay too cant drain shit .

This isn't installed correctly at all.
dry wells are garbage, they will always get flooded out in heavy rain fall. Do it right the first time around and get a french drain system going.
Much easier to do when you have a fresh home site. Not as easy when it's been there for 40 years.
I'm not following. I have a french drain around the parameter of my basement. I still have to find a place to put the water.
