What’s a gaylord? Am I hearing this right?
It’s like a big fruit box at the fruit markets full of watermelons lol The Americans tend to use them more then we do in Australia. They are common for book and media sellers to buy bulk inventory in. Basically a big box on a pallet full of inventory and wrapped around then in plastic.
Is it a company's name?
It is a bulk sized box that holds large quantities of stuff . A container.@@mrststreasures9628
@@mrststreasures9628 Gaylord: This specific style of box derives its name from the Gaylord Container Corporation, which was based in St. Louis, Missouri, during the first half of the 20th century. This company filed patents for several unique designs. Even though its packaging design innovations left a lasting impression, gaylord boxes are the only containers that still carry the name of this defunct brand.
Businesses and farmers came to rely on gaylord boxes for transporting products and fresh produce. This style, which fits on a pallet and usually includes a lid, is still used for these purposes today. The cartons are also referred to by generic terms, including bulk boxes or bulk bins, as well as pallet, skid or tote boxes.
It is not a company's name. It's just a standard industry name.
Mel is the Australian Barbara Walters! Great questions, no filler, no fluff. When the expert in the field repeatedly says 'Great question,' you know you've done an exemplary job. So proud of you, Mel.
Thank you so much!
She is far nicer than Barbara Walter's. I didn't like her.
@@stevedavenport1202 It was a reference to a respected interviewer that won 12 Emmy's. It doesn't matter if some people disliked her.
But she didn’t make him cry. 😂😂😂
Really great chat. My first job at 15 was as a watercolour print colourist for the leading antique map business in the UK in the 70s. We would colour prints and maps removed from damaged antique books which were then mounted and framed and sold all over the World. Happy times and probably set me on the road to being an online seller too.
That is awesome! What an interesting job that would have been!
And they were sold worldwide without benefit of the internet! I knew someone who did this map colouring for a bit, it was for a dealer in London’s Kings Road area I seem to remember, but more 1980s era. Don’t know if it was the same business you speak of.
@@vintagevic4593 The business was P J Redford based in Denmead Hampshire. He was considered to be an expert in the field. He lived in a pretty thatched cottage and we worked in a converted pig sty which was actually quite nice. The books were stored in a lovely old barn in the grounds. He wrote several books about antique maps as well. The business moved to Sheffield Park in Sussex.
Wow! I am sure I have bought and sold framed maps you may have colored! What a cool job.
Mel, your content lately has been superior.
Thank you so much. I’m working on it x
That's a fact ..I stopped watching her wayyyy back ...she is so real and awesome now ..
You are doing great! This one is really interesting
One of the best interviews I have ever watched. And I could tell you learned a lot too, Mel. Great job well done.
Thank you, we all can learn from each other. I’m constantly learning everyday and wanting to improve my own business.
WOW MEL. What an amazing interview. He certainly knows his books. His house must be huge to house that many books. His house insurance must be off the Richter Scale. Such a lot of information in one interview.well done you.
The only room without books in the entire house is the main bedroom. The garage was full also.
The fun part is, the way he is storing stuff. He can practically deduct a good chunk of his house on his taxes.
This was a fabulous interview - I learned so much! I sell many things, including books, and I do love non barcode books. My parents were going through my grandfathers old storage yesterday and it's chock full of books. They were sending me pictures of some of the books and they were surprised at what I was saying yes or no to. No to the generic history books, but then they told me about a book about graveyards in Rhode Island - I knew that book was going to be good. When I Googled it, the few that were out there sell for over $100. I love finding the books that are on a very specific topic...
Wow what an awesome find! Thank you for listening!
Ooooh graveyards- I love ghost
He is a great example of what I've been doing, but, he is a success; I am just in my infancy and began to wonder if there was a market there for the kind of books I list, as my sales are so low. I tend to grab the old books without bar codes that the scanners leave behind, using my knowledge, rather than my phone. Thanks for this video, as it is inspiring to see someone who is so successful in this niche.
From left field but... don't you write on Medium or used to? 🤔
I used to, but, I left that platform a few years back; I still have a Substack account, although I haven't fully utilized that platform, yet.@@tlcooper2.0
For me, this is-hands down-one of your best videos (and you have a lot of them). This was informative and motivating. Great interview.
What a great interview. So much knowledge shared for even non book sellers! Thanks Mel🙂
Thank you for that feedback! We can all learn from how other people sell things and run their business even if it’s not the same niche!
Thank you Mel.
I’m just starting out as an eBay seller and find that each of your videos has at least one knowledge gem.
Thank you Mel for one of the most informative you tube videos I’ve ever watched in this space. Your questions were fantastic and gave a really interesting perspective into how different sellers do things. Thanks also to Max for so generously sharing your knowledge.
Well done to you!
Awesome stuff Mel, I'm not a book seller myself, but I found that really interesting, and what a great compliment from Max right at the end, a lovely testament to your interviewing skills!
It would be fascinating to me (as well as others, I’m sure), if you did monthly in-depth interviews from top resellers of every book genre.
This interview is top notch. The best Mel ever and a guest with such a "wealth" of strategies for those of us who love old books especially the ones with the fantastic illustrators!! Thank you for sharing Max with us!
Definitely giving away a world of gold! Thanks Max and Mel for this phenomenal interview. I am a small shop that likes to sell pre-ISBN books, so I am thrilled with all the input.
You are such a great interviewer. You are not afraid to asked the questions that we really be wanting to know the answer to but sometimes be afraid to ask the question.
Great interview Mel. I learned a lot! Thanks to both of you!
Mel, thank you for doing this interview. I've been selling books for a while but learned so much!
What a great interview thank you Mel and Max
Oh Mel!! thank you EVER so much for doing this interview! I was mesmerised lol..I love books so much..especially old rare ones so this was so enjoyable to watch. I was amazed when I heard Max say that he just types the word "book" into eBay each day and then sort into highest price because that is EXACTLY what I have done over the years too (it is my bedtime reading routine lol) and was a great way for me to learn about rare or collectable books. I loved his house..it was book Heaven lol. P.S you are an excellent interviewer!
Great video. I love seeing other resellers and there views on reselling. Mel you should definitely do more interviews your really laid back and can tell how comfortable they are with you.
So many Gold nuggets in this interview Mel. Thanks for the this video Max is the Man!
Fascinating and illuminative! A superb interview - thank you Mel and Max! My personal feeling is that a good book shop, either modern or secondhand is one where a customer could happily spend several hours; preferring older books myself, I should love to meander around his book shelves.
Such a wealth of information! I had to listen to it twice. Thanks, Mel!!
Mel, you're a great interviewer. You should interview more unknown successful re-sellers. This was very enjoyable to watch.
That was excellent, so much info & quite exciting to open up new markets for us. Thanks Mel & Max. 👏👏
What a great interview, Mel that was so well structured and full of so much valuable information! Thank you both!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow - kudos to Max - to have that depth and breadth of knowledge gathered over the decades is fascinating. Wish he had a UA-cam channel to share slithers of experiences. Thanks, Mel, for a great interview. I liked that you went for the specifics in questioning. Xx
Thank you for listening!
Maybe Mel can talk Max into a UA-cam channel and she can sell fancy books!
That was awesome! And something different, too! Wonderful to hear two experienced booksellers talking about books. 😊

That was so worthwhile. I thoroughly enjoyed that and learned a great deal.
One hour of learning something new today is in the books after that!

I have been following you for a while now. Just watched this video and today I found 15 of these types of books. All signed first editions. ❤ Thank you for the continued education
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing and watching!!
Fantastic video Mel!
Hi Mel. I have to say this was one of the most (if not the most) interesting and educational vids you have done. I started over breakfast and had to force myself to stop to do the post and get my 10 listing's done. The listing's seemed to take forever before I could get back to the vid. I think over the time I have been watching you, you have become a very good interviewer, you seem to be able to get the best out of your subjects. I am certainly watching again to get the most out of it. Thanks for a great vlog.
Thank you so much. I appreciate the feedback. I really enjoying interviewing other people and finding out more of their story.
Yeah, as a crusty, old bookseller myself, it was a really good, enjoyable vid with lots of very good info and accurate description of the book market. Max knows what he is talking about.
Very interesting! Thank you for all the insight and knowledge.
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching!
This was very well done, very informative. I’ve only sold a couple of book lots and they did take a lot of research. I hope to add books into my portfolio soon.
Fantastic conversation! Thank you!
Our pleasure!
What a great interview. Lots of information.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great chat was interesting to hear his perspective
Thank you!
