My mom and I collected cookbooks before she passed. We’d sit and read them for hours together then put them on the shelf never to be touched again. I won’t sell these until I’m at the end of my life because they have sentimental value. Then I’ll sell them for my son so, he can have the money unless he wants the books themselves. I do have one book I use a lot though it’s an old Betty Crocker book. It’s has wonderful recipes two of which I use all the time. The recipes I use are the original chocolate chip cookie recipe and the chocolate cake recipe. I’ve made both a lot for my family and thanksgiving dinner for my husbands work. They have loved both each time with my husband only coming back with an empty plate. My first time making the cookies I forgot a ingredient and the cookies stuck together but, they were even better because they were chewy. They were gone before the end of the dinner. I love that recipe.
I sold a First Edition Gone With the Wind in my first antique mall space for $5...yes, five bucks. Knowledge is power. Love Dr. Lori. She is the premier antique appraiser because she educates and makes it fun too. She is herself and I totally trust her knowledge.
I once met a bookseller who purchased a couple boxes of books off a guy for $40, as the guy was going to throw it out and he just couldn't handle the thought of books being thrown out. Inside was a signed 1st Ed of Gone with the Wind and one of Hemmingway's books (i don't remember which). I have always been jealous of that and I hope to one day be that lucky.
Dr.Lori for...Empress of Universe! What DOESN'T this woman know?! I had no clue about storing them on their side, thought that would make pages more likely stick together. The ocd in me says keep em spine up but since Dr.Lori says otherwise..lol Thank you as always for great info, kindness and humor to your visitors.

Happy to hear it! I'm coming back to Houston soon. I help a lot of resellers make more money. I review photos of their pieces too before they list things for sale.
Yes I can lol always look for first editions and lay your books on their sides and if your buying a first edition book make sure the condition is really good no smells and no loose pages I always listen to you Dr Lori I’m curious to how much the George Washington wallet was appraised for 💖
I love watching Dr Lori searching her mental library when she can’t very rarely at first place the intersection of memory knowledge, but every single time you can see the connection made and pathway revealed as well as walked down the path to the knowledge location. This in my opinion is the best way to structure/restructure a memory museum, you need to later recall the information again later, you want to reinforce the knowledge by repeating it, as well as supporting it with other information which allows multi pathway indexing.
Shared this to my vintage cookbook group, few of us including myself have the White House cookbook. Various stages of disrepair, varying years. I was trying to explain how the values can range so widely. This video did a great job. My personal book is in decent condition from the McKinley era, 1901. However whoever had it before me pasted so many personal recipes and instructions on the inside, so many cut-outs (from newspapers) to it I had to lift them to see the date! It's very cool. I know it devalues at monetarily but it makes it an interesting history piece for the collector like me. The funniest part? Is the previous owner wrote in the inside cover directly under a written recipe, "I DON'T NEED YOUR ADVICE". Seems whoever was the previous cook had it all under control 😂
Thanks for sharing so others can enjoy. Sounds like you have a cookbook/diary :) Stay tuned since I think there is another video being edited that has another edition of a White House cookbook.
Thank you Dr. Lori I love books, love reading them also not only having them in my bookshelf. I did learned something big today, I thought I was taking care of my books very will, but I wasn't. Ihave them stand very neatly and tight so that they won't get all ruined. ButI was supposed to put them flat. I keep seeing in the library there standing so I thought that's the way there supposed to be, I guess I was wrong. Hope I didn't ruin my books. I am sure going to fix them. Love all your videos and admire your honesty. That's a beautiful quality that you have and helping us learn more every day. God bless you always.

Re Marbling at 10:19 I saw a video on UA-cam that showed how the marbling of paper was/is done. Sorry I can’t remember the channel but it was VERY fascinating & you’ll never under appreciate marbled paper after that.
I found a 1915 Edition Pocket Classic, of “Hale’s The Man Without A Country” at a local thrift store. The condition is pretty good, the spine is strong and pages intact. The only two issues I see is a sticker within the front that’s either covering something that’s written there, or was placed there to write upon it. The second issue is on the back inside cover where a personalized signature was written. What would be the best steps to go through before listing it to sell? Appreciate your videos, you’ve made me aware of several items I may be able to sell. Gotta save in order to make a move, every penny counts! I’m letting go of heirlooms that our children just wouldn’t be attached to, like I am.
Many people use my online appraisal reports to help them sell their pieces. The reports include a proper description and a location where a similar piece sold and for how much. Happy to hear you enjoy the videos! Don't forget about the grand kids. They often want grandma's stuff but are never asked.
@@deianncunningham9935 I'd have to see it to verify condition and what you really have. Can you send me photos using the form on my website? Bring it to one of my events?
Oh Dr. Lori, I hope that tape didnt hurt removing your headset!!! Ouch! Love your appraisals! Learned how to store vintage books properly now!!! Love it!!
Another informative video. I never would have thought to store a book on its side on a bookshelf to help preserve it. My mom and I are going to try and get into one of your sessions in Seattle next month. That would be awesome to meet you!
My family were Brethren in Pennsylvania when the German bible was printed. The story is that they gripped about how much Benjamin Franklin charged for the printing materials for thier Bibles:) Dr. Lori's reminder of history is always welcome.
I have a very old book called "the Libbey chronicles " I think it is....been a while since I've looked at it. Its about the Libbey prison with a news paper article about someine in it. No one I can find can tell me anything about it. Very nice you go around places...not every one can find knowledgeable people! Love watching your videos!
@@courtneyritter1285 Love from staying at home in Pennsylvania! I was just in Westfield and Ft Wayne in February where I did 6 days of events. Sorry I missed you. Keep tabs on my schedule on my website.
I love that there are still people in this world that appreciate old books ❣️ BTW, isn't there anything that can be done for the bad odor in books ? I had acquired a few books from a yard sale years ago but not from buying them... She just gave them to me after making a deal with her about another issue.. 🤣 Back to the books, I have a couple that I believe might be worth a few bucks if i were to sell them/ if I could get rid of the ODOR ! 🙄😳
People like vinyl records again so books should be no surprise. Check with a University library about possible options to minimize the odor. I know possible methods using baking soda and deodorizing pouches may help, but I suggest you consult with a conservator
@@DrLoriV Thank you so much dear ! Yes, I have seen so many people collecting those vinyls. Sure does take me back & make me want to get back with my X for about 3 days.. long enough to... NAAA FORGET THAT.. LOL. LOVE YA DR. LORI❣️🌹❣️
When my mother in law passed away. Her kids took turns choosing items they wanted. Afterwards indirect family could take a few things; before the rest was boxed for Goodwill. No one even bothered looking at her books. I grabbed some fantastic ones. I do wish I had her instead of the books!
@@DrLoriV I'm enjoying watching your videos. Books lying sideways on the self. Mine dont smell either, LOL. I need to have the books I got checked. I think they're 1st edition of The Works by Edgat Allen Poe volumes 2-10. I never could find vol. 1. I also grabbed a 6 vol. Shakespeare collection. I dont believe its 1st edition, but it is old. I went to an estate sale today she had books in every room. Hundreds and hundreds of cook books but I didn't know enough so I just bought the oldest looking ones.but they are not in good condition. This was a huge estate sale with a packed house couldn't believe how much stuff

Hi Dr. lori! Very interesting about old books. I'm learning alot from you. I love looking over books @ goodwill & other places. I was never sure what to look for, so thank you. I have some I found through the years but have no idea if they're of value. I don't have them standing up either 😍 Still have my Little red riding hood book with the 45. When I look a it I feel like I did way back then ❤ Thanks for sharing!
Have you watched my video series on the channel here focusing on reselling? Have you read my articles on my website on the topic? I also offer classes on reselling.
Haven't watched it yet, so I'll play. 1) These do not appear to be antique books other than the large one top row 2) None appear to have the dust jacket 3) Although some children's books can be of significant value, these appear to be book club or general runs based on the cover 4) I'm going to go with condition, condition, condition so that eliminates two based on the single pictures provided. That leave the red unmarked book and the two on the bottom right. The bottom right appears to have several stories, so I'm going to eliminate that one and pick the red book with the red background.
@@DrLoriV In under 18 minutes I picked up over half a dozen ideas. #1 is I need to rearrange my books (laying them down) this week to save the spines :-) I'm planning on meeting you in September when you visit St. Louis, maybe even reaching out and offering an invitation for an in-house visit. Thank you for the whimsical, engaging way you pass on knowledge.
📚 📖 Saw this not long ago trying to learn about books but always like to go back and review. I’m waiting for the rest of my things to be shipped and hope my books make it safely! Meanwhile I’ll keep learning from the best (Dr Lori)👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Thank you for all the great video’s!
I have a large beautiful leather bound atlas from 2002 published by Dorling Kindersley. Watching this video makes me think that I may need to take better care of it. Who knows how much it would be worth in forty years?
Oh my goodness when I saw this book that had the marbling in it I remember a bunch of them about this same appearance and size. But when I was 10 years old I'm not into really reading I hated reading and you're probably saying to yourself how can anyone hate reading well when you're not literate like I was I preferred math with I got a pluses and if I got a B+ I was very disturbed by the fact that my mass was only at a B+. But getting back to this book I remember seeing them in my dad's Library o bunch of them and I just admire the beauty inside and he told me they were very old books know my father started collecting years and years before I was born cuz he was born in 1906 and my mother was born 1930.. I would say without a word of lie my dad must have had at least 3,000 old books and he loved books and like I said he took care of them and you never touch my dad's books
I have a book from 1880, The publisher was D.Lothrop & Co. The title is History of Egypt by Clara Erskine Clement, its a hard back. I've looked online and the only reference I can find is from the Library of Congress. My father had a collection of books, we donated most all of books but I held on to this one because of the date and the unique book cover. Do you have any information about this book or whom I can take it to for an appraisal?
I am enjoying all of the videos but happen to be a „book person“. The way you left no doubt about how to „store“ them without making me faint (concidering the work that comes along with that) is quite stunning. I also am glad that you explained what the meaning of the mark on the Kipling book means and where it originated, how old it was and that nobody should tape a torn page- there are other ways. Fine rice paper for instance. At least I believe so. I really would enjoy a special about inks and paper and ink wells one day. I truly enjoy watching your shows. 👌🏻
@@GeschichtenUndGedanken I appreciate the feedback. Search my channel. I have vids where I talk about books, inks and paper and I think I have a few posted or coming up soon about ink wells. I can also look at your specific pieces from photos or you can show me your pieces during a video call.
What are you confused about? I'm right. Where is "everywhere else"--what sources are you referring to? In my experience, antique books should not be shelved vertically as undue stress to the spine results, bindings fade in the sunlight and wooden shelves off gas.
Mabel here I just love your videos I love garage sales and a state sales. I have one question I have 2paints they are a set. Would they be double charge. Thanks for the lessons.
@@mabelbond1048 If they are in fact a set that would have originally been sold together, like a pair of salt and pepper shakers, I can consider them as one item for an appraisal.
Dang, just finished watching your show on books, hmm got a few and they're bagged and clean. But I'm not into books, jewelry I'm insane and I gotta have it if it smells old and believe that it is. But I'm always looking for a deal, as you say. Beanies, screw me running 😲. But I was about to dump the collection I've been buying and getting for ages. Looks like this old woman better find out how much they're worth. Ugh. But I hate holding on to stuff, hahaha, that's how I acquired a lotta stuff
I’m so glad I found this channel. I inherited some postcards from 1903-1950’s that were my great great grandmothers, they’re not really worth anything just old and we did our family tree so I got to see all about her family and where they came from.. pretty cool stuff.. we have some old stuff that might be worth something.. maybe someday you can appraise them.

Oh Dr. Lori, I hope that tape didnt hurt removing your headset!!! Ouch! Love your appraisals! Learned how to store vintage books properly now!!! Love it!!
I know! It is actually common for the audio folks to do that. Thanks for watching and caring :)
So glad I found this channel!!
Welcome
Just found your channel. I'm learning so much! You are way better than Antiques Roadshow. I'd much rather watch you!
Welcome! Happy to hear you are learning :)
learned alot today thank you Doc Lori
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Happy New Year! Glad to hear you are learning.
Another informative video. I never would have thought to store a book on its side on a bookshelf to help preserve it. My mom and I are going to try and get into one of your sessions in Seattle next month. That would be awesome to meet you!
Thanks for watching! Hope to see you in Seattle Feb 17 & 18. Two shows each day. Please introduce yourself and say hi!
Not sure how I never saw this video but it's on my re-watch list. I have a whole stack of books in my ask Dr. Lori pile 🤓
My family were Brethren in Pennsylvania when the German bible was printed. The story is that they gripped about how much Benjamin Franklin charged for the printing materials for thier Bibles:) Dr. Lori's reminder of history is always welcome.
Thanks for sharing. Funny story!
The Best Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Happy to do it! Don't forget to share the video/knowledge.

Who are you asking? If you really want to know I can help. Bring it to one of my events :)
@@DrLoriV Boy would I love to! Thank you!

Dr. Lori I am so coming to an event!
Love from Indiana!
@@courtneyritter1285 Love from staying at home in Pennsylvania! I was just in Westfield and Ft Wayne in February where I did 6 days of events. Sorry I missed you. Keep tabs on my schedule on my website.
One of these times, I will guess correctly LOL! You are so enjoyable to watch Dr. Lori!!
It's fun to play!!
I love that old book smell, of course ones in good condition
LOL. LOVE YA DR. LORI❣️🌹❣️

My new goal in life is to meet Dr. Lori in person some day!!!
When my mother in law passed away. Her kids took turns choosing items they wanted. Afterwards indirect family could take a few things; before the rest was boxed for Goodwill. No one even bothered looking at her books. I grabbed some fantastic ones. I do wish I had her instead of the books!
Thanks for sharing. Yes we can replace items, but not our loved ones :)
I'm disabled from a car wreck.I could really use the money to fix the foundation on my home. Whom could I trust to look at them in Oklahoma City?
@@onecuet Sorry to hear about the accident. I can look at your books. You can send me photos or show me during a FaceTime or Skype call.

You are amazing! Facts and info abound.
Happy to hear you are enjoying the vids Debby!
I enjoy you so much Dr. Lori. I saw the clown, music, jewelry box and the gone with the wind book. How much did you appraise the jewelry box for? I have both.I have tons of old cook books. I love the history, you are so knowledgeable! I learned so much!!
Happy to hear you are learning. Keep watching, those pieces might appear in a future video!
Ok I love doc lori, just came across these vids and love them
❤ Love your info. Dr.Lori....
I went to an estate sale today she had books in every room. Hundreds and hundreds of cook books but I didn't know enough so I just bought the oldest looking ones.but they are not in good condition. This was a huge estate sale with a packed house couldn't believe how much stuff
Watch my videos so you can tell which items to buy. Condition is a BIG value indicator.
Awesome video would love to see more of the book ones.
Always search my channel and website. Here are at least two more videos on my channel about books .... ua-cam.com/video/KXUYCorrmWw/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/yocLRinuk00/v-deo.html
Hi Dr. lori! Very interesting about old books. I'm learning alot from you. I love looking over books @ goodwill & other places. I was never sure what to look for, so thank you. I have some I found through the years but have no idea if they're of value. I don't have them standing up either 😍 Still have my Little red riding hood book with the 45.

Where would you suggest selling antique paintings, Lalique Crystal, and old cookbooks?
Have you watched my video series on the channel here focusing on reselling? Have you read my articles on my website on the topic? I also offer classes on reselling.
Thank you so much !! This is very helpful information . 👍
Always nice to see your comments Lisa!
Without revealing the answer and spoiling it for others, how did you do?
@@DrLoriV In under 18 minutes I picked up over half a dozen ideas. #1 is I need to rearrange my books (laying them down) this week to save the spines :-) I'm planning on meeting you in September when you visit St. Louis, maybe even reaching out and offering an invitation for an in-house visit. Thank you for the whimsical, engaging way you pass on knowledge.
Hope to see you in St. Charles (near St. Louis). I'll be there three days. Please say hi and introduce yourself.

Dr Lori, do you see old books go up in value in the next decades? Will paper become a rarity?
Good question to ask during my next Ask Dr. Lori LIVE video so I can answer in detail and teach everyone watching.

I have a large beautiful leather bound atlas from 2002 published by Dorling Kindersley. Watching this video makes me think that I may need to take better care of it. Who knows how much it would be worth in forty years?
I can help tell you what its worth now if you like.
Dr Lori!!!! Good stuff
I would like to have a class about how to identify old book, by the material of the binding, page, print and stuff odor too
I have 2 album of vinlydics very old albums how can I show you Dr. Lori I want to sell it for my family needs.thankyou

I love you dr. Lori 😩😭😭
Always nice to hear from you :)
I can appraise it. You can send photos of it using a form on my website or bring the book to one of my events. I'll tell you what people really pay!
Excellent episode! I love it.
Happy to hear it! Something in particular that you liked about this video compared to my others? Other videos on YT?
I'm a bit confused. You mentioned more than once that books should be stacked, but everywhere else I look has said they should be shelved vertically.
What are you confused about? I'm right. Where is "everywhere else"--what sources are you referring to? In my experience, antique books should not be shelved vertically as undue stress to the spine results, bindings fade in the sunlight and wooden shelves off gas.
Dr. Lori, You are such a genius.
Is there an online marketplace that you recommend for rare and antique books?
My online appraisal reports offer location(s) where your books actually sold at my appraise values. Reports can be requested on my website.
Gosh , I swear she is addicted to Dr.Lori my husband said to our daughter 😂, yup and mom is loving it .
Good answer honey good answer 😏

Im not the only one who sniffs books.
This is mandatory
I have allergies to mold
I found books in the trash no smell
I went to a book sale I could not approach
Welcome! I can help. I look at photos, do video calls, and you are welcome to come to one of my events :)
Wow I just found you and thanks for making learning fun. Maybe now I can get the energy to get rid of some of my 150 + collections
