  • A short demonstration of the tools and procedures for the initial fluid fill of an experimental aircraft brake system. A Matco brake system is used to show the general principles involved that can be used with any similar design.

Your instruction is excellent. You're very clear, articulate and just do a great job of explaining needed details in a way that is simple, yet complete. Well done!

You forgot the part where you inadvertently spray 5606 all over yourself and the shop. You then walk in the house only to get yelled at by your wife for smelling so bad.

We use a different procedure for racing brakes, but the remote reservoir above the Master Cylinder is used to add the fluid, and you either vacuum the fluid/air out of the lowest bleed valve, or the 2 man job, is to have 1 person pump up the pedal until firm, then hold and continue pressure, while somebody else opens up the bleed nipple on the caliper, with a tube into a bottle of brake fluid, and you evacuate the air out of the system, from the top to the bottom. This assumes that you have access to the reservoir on the master cylinder, which it doesn't look like your Matco system provides.

you can use external reservoir (MCR-100) but you then need to use MC-4's wich has 2 ports - one for the line the other for the reservoir

We have the Matco PH-1As on our SuperSTOL and I'm stick of dealing with the pastic (that's what I call 'em) brake lines. Looks like you have some great Russel lines on there... what size/type are they? I'm really tempted to replace ours. Thanks for the video!

Do you have a source in the US for the plastic (nylon) lines that are common in European LSAs?

Matco (now) says do NOT use ANY DOT brake fluid --- you are to use MIL- PRF- 5606 or MIL-PRF-83282 only
Vans systems typically require a full pint

Did I see teflon tape on some of your connections? If so, oops, nono. Just like with fuel lines, thats a disaster waiting to happen. Locktite 567 is (usually) the best ticket.

While this is good advice, the fact is, teflon tape used INCORRECTLY is a problem, while teflon tape used CORRECTLY is perfectly safe. If you wrap the tape only on the threads and don't let any wrap past the nose of the NPT threads it will work as it's supposed to. That said, the white hydraulic thread sealers are much more difficult to get wrong.
