Dude, this review was the most helpful out of 10+ reviews I’ve watched so far comparing these two lenses! I’ve been leaning toward getting the 24mm f1.4, but so many reviews felt like they were pushing me to save $500 because the difference is almost nothing..... but you showed me that the difference is huge on the 1.4 vs 1.8! I’m done deciding now. Getting the 24mm thanks to you!
Man I just wanted to say I know NOTHING about cameras and I’m trying to get a dope setup for my guitar playing/lesson videos. I bought the ZVE-1 because of you and now I’m getting the 24mm after being unsure about what to get. Just wanna say THANKS! You make it easy for a noob like me to make a decision. I subscribed!
Thanks for this video. I'm just thinking about to buys one of these lenses (mainly for landscapes and traveling). I think the 20mm is not bad, a good working tool, but in my eyes it doesn't have this magical look of the 24mm 1.4. Greetings from your new channel memeber from Germany :)
It's good to *finally* see someone do real-world side-by-side comparisons of the field-of-view look (especially like at 04:24) to illustrate the differences between these two lenses. Thanks for the great content! One tip: with AF tests, moving side-to-side is just testing the AF tracking, not the focus motor. Try running at the camera or away from it to really see if the motors can keep up! :-)
Great comparison, Terry! This is is one of the more helpful comparison videos i have seen: knowledgeable and a great mix of specs and use-cases. Thank you!.Subbed!
My first visit in your channel and I have to say that I am impressed! I HATE how most people these days try to make you sit through a vLog before they get to the review! You got straight to business and I appreciate that! I cover race cars, vLog and I do tutorials but NEVER mix a vLog into a non vLog! Everyone is trying to be Casey Neistat 🤦♂️. Casey is the man but there is only one Casey! You have a great personality- glad to see you being you! Subbed! Keep up the good work!
It’s a tough call man. Sony sent me the 24mm to use for a bit, and I fell in love with it. That being said, the 20mm would be a bit better for my vlogging content 🤔
Obviously years later but still a relevant comparison as neither has been replaced yet. After trying both, I've just gone for the 20mm as my existing kit was 35, 85, 100-400, and 20mm is a perfect companion to those other lenses. Including cashback I just got the 20mm for £625 which is just a bargain. I couldn't justify any reason to go for the 24mm as I rarely shoot at f1.4 anyway. It's just an excellent lens and almost crazy how Sony undercut its own lens with an equally good product at a lesser price.
So using 20mm on Sony a7siii actually becomes better than 24. We get 1.13 crop in active stab so 20 becomes 22.6 on the top of that if you shoot in 4K 120 you get a small crop of 1.1 that’s brings the 20mm to 24.86 so why not get the 20mm and save a few bucks. On the stills sides it still 20mm unless you clear image zoom and make it 40mm :) I think it’s a good buy with Sony a7siii or FX3.
Great review Terry. What sony lens would you recommend for video to shoot stationary cars, the interior and exterior and some nice slow motion? Which lens would do all that?
TerryWarfield added some zooms for my a6600 to go w/ my 2 primes. Had to sell some stuff, but I added a Sony 18-105 f4 for all around, & sigma 100-400 w/ mc-11 for moon and wildlife.
Great video and comparison. I don't shoot video and prefer that crazy wide, almost awkward visual that 20mm brings to landscape or city photography. It uplifts a photograph into artwork. That's why I chose the 20mm.
Hi! very nice video! What do you think about distortion in portraits compared to the 24mm GM? Can I get the same result by cropping a photo taken with the 20mm to reach 24 than taking it with the 24? Will there be any difference in perspective and distortion in the case of cropping? Thanks
I don't subscribe often, but when you did the focus test... Dude... Laughed out loud and subscribed. Great stuff. Give zero fs what anyone thinks. Gotta get the truth out there. Thank you.
An other excellent video. Plus it’s partly freaking hilarious the way you talk and present.. great personality! Suggestion: bring part 2 of 20 vs 24 but focus more on pictures captured with both lenses!! Show the composition capabilities and characteristics. Bonus tip: we need affiliate links for the clothing brand you are rocking! I’m a similar build and wonder what’s the brand lol
one of the best reviews I've seen on UA-cam, because you got right to it no bs. You got a new subscriber keep up the great content looking forward to more.
Your channel popped up for the first time for me. Really useful comparison! I like the 24mm for environmental stills portraits for all the reasons you mentioned liking it for vlogging. Thanks!
This is a fantastic review you put up here mate. i really love your approach on the focus test. You did a great job and im definitely subscribing. love your content.
I just got the 20mm today and yours is the only review that covered the topic I was most interested in. I like the lens, but I was surprised by lens elements moving around in the casing. I wasn't sure if this was a defect, so glad you addressed that. Lens is wicked sharp and is the fastest auto focusing lens I have used to date. Thanks.
Nice review! Got me a 24mm GM! Was trying to decide between 24 GM or the 24 Sigma art. I have 20 2.8 from Tamron but haven’t got a chance to use it yet. Traveling next month and I am going to bring my tamron 20 and 24 GM. Excited!
Did You cut out Focus hunting @ 8:01 ? I know my question implies that I know that a denying answer will not help, hence... But perhaps an other plausible answer for they why of that cut there? Still good thing Your video.
Best comparaison so far . Thx. Looking to pick one of those to cover night wedding ceremony on gimbal. What would you choose if you only have to pick one for the night event??
Very well done bro, fantastic that you tested the auto focus, aswell as the examples. Maybe you can do a video of how it functions on the Aps-c cameras for some of us that have both full and crop sensor Sony’s. 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
I have to agree.. i prefer the 24mm look for vlog. Im here to listen to your content.. not be distracted by stuff in the bkground.. IMHO. Good info. Thanks.
99% of my photography is stills and when I want a landscape lens, the 20mm is it for me. I'll be shooting it at f11 or higher anyway. Question: in the school parking lot testing, did you reverse the two lenses? The latter part of that series was a lot wider than the first part.
If I was using the lens for video as you are than the 24mm is a better option but as some one that uses his gear for photography because the view in front of me is much more photogenic being that I am a 67 year old balding white dude, the only time I photograph my self is when I'm having a dinner on the beach with my wife in Aruba, see I kinda look like actor John Lovits, not the most handsome white dude but as long as I take my wife to Aruba once a year, I can continue my obsession with photography and camera gear, I have the 20mm f1.8 in my collection but opted for the compact G series lens at 24mm and 40mm. I have fast f1.4 options for my Panasonic S5 and S5 MKII that I used in my event photography days...Peace!
Shout-out from Macedonia, OH - These two are my favorites (with the 30mm f/1.8 completing the trinity), but the 24GM is my all-time - just finished my first documentary almost entirely on the 24GM - f/1.4 makes it so versatile.
Having seen this video saves me a grand+ as I have the best of both focal lengths with the Tamron 17-28 f2.8. Although I'd love to have either one I don't see a significant improvement that justifies an upgrade. Although probably great for photo, the building in the background showed a lot of focus breathing on the 24.
Amazing comparison. Thanks so much. Only that during the footage of comparing the AF I was confused about why the 24mm had a wider fov than 20mm, at least it seemed so!
A truly excellent review that provided the best comparison I’ve yet seen between these lenses. The video has been extremely helpful. I have the GM lens, but wondered about the 20mm. Both have their great features as you’ve said. Thanks.
Thanks. Surprisingly there's not much videps comparing the vlogging look the way you did that. Personally I'm going for the 24mm as well. The wider focal length doesn't seem to make too much of a difference, but the better bokeh is definitely noticable. And the extra stops I'll get in low light makes it a winner

I’ve used the 20mm a lot for video on the S3. The extra 4mm you get is nice to make up for the crop from active stabilization.

I just want the sample of Terry saying, "Now I'm over here."
What about using them with focus breathing compensation and active stabilization on a7iv? Is the 20 better option since the crop needed?
It makes it have the perfect 24mm look he was arguing works best aside from the .4mm aperture difference wide open
