    Just to clarify... I've compared my copy of the 20mm to two versions of the 24mm GM and I've also conferred with 2 other people who own both. They both agreed that the 20mm was sharper than the 24mm. So even if there is sample variation, the results of the comparisons I did above are consistent.

      Nice clarification, I had a nagging question that maybe a breeze could have been present that would have made the two shots look different. I love the 24mm GMaster, and had been looking for an excuse to not play with the 20mm :)

      To be honest I had no idea you can go all the way to A. I was kind of annoyed I had to do it myself all the time but got used to it and thought it was cool. I'm always in aperture mode anyway but this will matter when I start doing video in P-mode.

    Great news that it's actually 19.3 ish mm, instead of 20mm, for such a lens, being a bit wider is an advantage.
    The team that created the 24mm f1.4 GM and the 20mm f1.8 deserves a lot of praise, they've created the best lenses ever in their focal lengths. Note: it being called G means that a GM version can come in the future, probably f1.4.

      who would by the gm 20mm f1.4 not sure a 1/3 of a stop would make people rush to buy it now a 14mm f1.4 gm if they could make such a lens would have people in numbers waiting for it

    Fabulous work in comparing these two lenses. Thank you, Alyn! Have been reading reviews and looked at a few other videos, but yours was the most specific and helpful. Was also considering the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 RXD, but some noted weaknesses sent me back to Sony lenses. Based on your observations, I see no reason to spend 55% more for the 24mm f/1.4 GM input for my hobbyist needs. So, I have decided to invest in the 20mm f/1.8 G for my initial foray into astrophotography this year! I upgraded my camera to the Sony a9 two years ago but have only the kit 24-105mm f/4.0 G, so far. The inherent sharpness of the 20mm G also should be great for some expansive landscape shots, especially in the lower light of blue and golden hours. I'm excited! Heading to Big Bend National Park in remote southwest Texas in late March -- high, dry, and virtually no light pollution. Should be inspiring! Thanks again.

      You’re going to love the 20mm! I’ve used the 14mm GM, Tamron 17-28mm, 20mm G, and am going to use the 24mm GM next clear night.
      I often times find myself going to the 20mm, even though I have the 14mm in my camera bag. For the relatively cheap price, the Sony 20mm performs just as well as the more expensive GM lenses.
      The only reason I miss the Tamron 17-28 after selling it, is for the flexibility of it being a zoom lens. I did still love it for Astrophotography too.

    Hi Alyn. Great video. Just got myself a Sony A7III and have been deciding between the 24mm 1.4 and 20mm 1.8, so this was interesting and think I will go with the 20mm for the wider field of view. Can I please ask, the time lapse video at the end with the milky way in view, as a beginner I would love to learn how to do this type of shot with my new gear. Do you have any videos posted on achieving this or could recommend any other good links? Many thanks, Shaz.

    Great analysis Alyn.. I have both the 24GM and the 20G , and the only factor that’s effects my choice in the field is the foreground composition elements. If for example you plan to do a significant amount of focus stacking, with some light painting of a foreground object that is close to center of the frame, I’ll use the 20mm since the .4 stop light gathering advantage of the 24GM is not as apparent and the additional field width of the 20mm can provide a larger sense of scale. If the location does not afford, close foreground elements of interest. I’ll reach for the 24GM as the additional .4 stop of light gathering and edge to edge sharpness with low distortion is where the 24Gm shines. If I could only have one lens however, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the 20mm and then spend the additional savings on better night camping gear or to pay for travel costs to a dark sky location where you won’t care so much (or at all) about the .4 stop advantage.

    • @CedricRachmad
      @CedricRachmad 3 роки тому +1

      I guess you're only talking about astro scenes here? But what about other scenes? Would you still use both lenses? I already have the 24gm and considering a wide zoom vs this 20 (19)mm.

    • @surrogatemarker
      @surrogatemarker 3 роки тому +1

      @@CedricRachmad yes and yes! My comment was more to a Astro use case especially if one were choosing one lens over another. In fact having both in your bag is ideal for lighted landscape photography and the 20mm is probably better for selfie and vlog style compositions where more of the background is visible especially for travel videography and photography. Although any modern Sony body is capable of amazing autofocus, the maximum aperture of the 20mm @1.8 does give a slightly deeper field of focus than the 1.4 of the 24mm GM. On a few occasions, in low light, and at f1.4 the 24mm has missed focus or lost focus (in my experience) with lots of motion in the scene, but the 20mm’s deeper field of focus at f1.8 is less critical and holds focus at similar available light and background motion.

    Thanks for great video. Looks like you can't go wrong with neither of them.
    For me the 24mm was the better choice as it teams up better with the 14 1.8. also the 24 is a pretty nice portrait lens.

  • @arthurb1400
    @arthurb1400 3 роки тому +1

    Thank you for the interesting review Alyn ! Did you have issues with the field curvature and corner sharpness with the Tokina 20mm at f2 ? I just received the Tokina and after few quick tests I see that when I'm focusing on the center of the image at f2 all corners are not in the focus. And when I'm focusing on a corner the center is not in the focus. Is focusing somewhere on a midframe can help to get reasonably sharp center and corners ?
    Currently we are under a curfew and I cannot make a test with a night sky. I can test the lens only during the day.

    I’ve recently bought this. I have the 24 and the 14 GMs and use the A7IV. I have an issue with the sharpness on this lens. I think it’s too sharp! Because with tracked images of 3 minutes with focus and PA nailed I got some weird star colours - I think star eater has reduced many stars to strange shaped coloured pixels. Weird. And you’re right about the manual focus ring locking on to infinity. It does seem to settle on perfect focus. Perhaps out of focus would be better to avoid star eater.

    Thanks for the review. I've got 2 questions:
    1. You said the optimal F stop for 20mm is 2.2, what's for the 24mm?
    2. Are you excited about the coming 12-24mm 2.8 Sony GM?

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  4 роки тому

      1. I think I mentioned in the video, I find f/2.0 to be the sweet spot of the 24mm, but it's perfectly useable at f/1.4.
      2. I am excited but I'm not excited about the rumoured price!

    Gotta remember that some of those slight differences in sharpness may just be copy variation.
    Both are awesome lens's. I have the GM so no use in my buying the G, IMO.

    Excellent video again Alyn. Now, I am looking for a 2nd Sony body as a companion to my A9II and with the current promotion from Sony that the cashback is doubled on selected lenses when one of the selected bodies is bought. I am thinking on a A7rIV actually,. That means the lens will drop from €1.529 (list price) to €1.329 (along with some extra discount from my regular supplier). Compare this to the €1.100 list price and will I lean to purchase that 24mm 1.4 GM.
    But man, you do not make it easy in my decision by singing praises to that 20mm :)

      @vincentvdb3151 4 роки тому

      I did bit the bullet yesterday and went today to pickup my new goodies and one of those goodies was indeed the 24mm f/1.4 GM. Why? Due to a cashback action and an additional effort from both my camera shop and Sony Belgium was the difference between the 24 and 20mm truly not all that much anymore.

    I agree there isnt much disparity in clarity between the two, but it seems like both lenses have something the other doesnt. As much as I want the 20mm just to have it, Id rather spring for the 12-24 gmaster personally, just has more diversity even if it is really expensive.

    It's a great comparison. Thank you for it. Only thing I don't understand why you compared the sharpness of the lens at trees at 15 seconds exposure. Maybe when you made the shot with the 20mm 1.8 there were no wind at all, but there were some when you shot with the others. Probably it would be better to compose into the picture a building or similar instead of trees for the sharpness comparison.

    Is the Sony 16-35mm a good option (over the Canon 16-35mm) for use with a Canon body for nightscapes and milky-way photography? Or does the Sony 20mm beat the Sony 16-35mm for the same? Again, I'd use it with my Canon body.

    Oh you are killing me! I had myself talked out of the 20mm until this. My night photography is usually limited to aurora so the f1.4 is important to how I shoot, but more than once I've wanted that extra FOV for a composition. I had the Sigma 14mm f1.8 but was an unwieldy beast so I found myself leaving it behind and eventually sold it. This little 20mm would be great for when I want the extra view and still only give up a little of the light. Sigh....my husband is going to dislike you if I buy this one too. :-)

    Alyn I currently have the Tokina 20mm f/2.0 FiRIN. In your opinion, would you say that the Sony 20mm is so good that it would be worth replacing my Tokina with it?

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  4 роки тому +1

      If you shoot a lot of astro then yes. But the Tokina is certainly not a bad lens, I've loved it over the past couple of years, but it really struggled to produce good looking timelapses because the strong vignette means noisy images. Sony is sharper and brighter and has less aberrations on the stars

    • @R.Hogarth

      @@AlynWallace just to follow up & close the loop (a year and a half later). I did eventually replace my 20mm Tokina Firin with a pair of lenses, the 21mm f/2.8 Zeiss Loxia and the 14mm f/1.8 GM. Not a low cost replacement, but I love the optics on both of these lenses.
