One year for Christmas, I made card baskets for the upcoming year. These were great for relatives that I didn’t know what to do for a gift. The basket included hello, thinking of you, birthday, thank you cards etc. I also included some of the holidays in the year also. I put a booklet of postage and a pen. They all said it was the best gift.
Great tips! Before I retired I used to sell cards to my co-workers. I had a box of them at my desk and sold them for only $3-$4 each - I know that's not much but it pays for my supplies at least, which is fine because I love making cards! I always made cards for Valentine's Day as well as Mothers/Fathers Day and usually sold out. Since I retired, I've heard from several people that they really miss having my cards available and that the ones in the stores aren't nearly as nice. The other thing I do is give "card packs" as gifts. I put together 10 cards - 4 birthday, 2 thank you, 2 sympathy and 2 with no sentiment for any occasion. Then I make a nice box (tons of tutorials on UA-cam or Pinterest) and they make great gifts for birthdays, Christmas, and hostess gifts.
Last year I sent 200 blank handmade cards to the middle school where my brother teaches in the last two weeks of the school year. He put them in the teacher’s lounge so people could write appreciation or encouragement cards for each other. Teachers have had a rough time over the past few years and this went over well.
I donate cards to my church and other organizations. I also periodically offer them for sale to my Bible study group. I don't "market" them. I just bring them, lay them out on a table and leave an envelope for them to put money in. I tell them, "Just pay what you want to." I'm not trying to make a business out of it, but I use the money to replenish my supplies and to pay postage on the donations that I have to ship.
I donate cards to my local food bank. They can give them to their clients or charge a small amount for each card, which goes back to the food bank. I sell a few every now and then to family and friends but it’s not about making money for me. I’ve also given cards to our family doctor in appreciation of being so awesome! Oh, and I actually mail cards to family and friends for birthdays, holidays and other special occasions! 😊 It’s why I started this hobby in the first place. 💌
Last year I made packs of card, along with a set of stamped sentiments that had double stick tape (the kind with the protective peel off backing) - Altenew, Pink Fresh, Spellbinders and Stampin’ Up sell stamps with coordinating dies where you stamp out a bunch of sentiments and die cut them all at same time. I boxed them and gave them to the women in my family for Mother’s Day gifts. That way they could just pick out the sentiment that fit, stick it onto the cards. They really loved this!
I love this video! I’m going to approach a local cat rescue group to see if they’d like cards, maybe sets.
I once made a card for a store saleswoman. She’d stepped in when the salesman who had helped previously went out of town so hadn’t followed through. When I returned and give her the card, she cried, said it was art, and that no one had ever done anything like this before. (It was a very simple one layer card inspired by colors she wore.) Often we don’t see the reaction, but her reaction was a gift to me that is still an inspiration several years later.
I just watched your last class on making eight cards in eight minutes and I was thinking I really want to make them but what would I do with them. Then I was inspired to give them to a fellow special education teacher and she can hand them out to her students.
I package cards for a door prize or an auction basket.
Senior Centers and hospice always can use Thinking of you cards.
I also donated to Operation Write Home back in the day! I learned so much about cardmaking from Sandy Allnock, and am now more confident and consistent in making and donating my cards to some of the organizations you've referenced on your blog. Appreciate all the different kinds of videos you make, and love all of your templates. Great ideas, here; thank you, Jess!
Great video! Love the joke idea.
I regularly donate cards to Cards for Kindness.
The last several months, I also started making cards for a local hospice organization. Each of their hospice workers will bring a hospice patient a signed card, when they go for a visit. Not only does hospice love the cards, but so do their patients! It brings a smile to their face & to let them know they are thought of.
I donate to a Hospice as well. The staff and recipients are so please to have something different.
I just finished making a stack of 44 cards, all occasions, using up a lot of scrap background papers. I am boxing them up with envelopes and will give them to my daughter in law who is a manager at a personal care home. So much fun and I know it will help her because she has been buying cards for them. It is a blessing to have the ability to do this for others. Thanks for your ideas, very helpful suggestions.
My family gets packs of cards for birthdays, Christmas etc. They get a package of 6 cards for each gift. I do let them pick what combo of cards they want.
I donate to retirement homes opp shops and my church I also give them away randomly and family cards of course all those birthdays . I tried to sell mine at our local car boot sale but it was hit and miss for a lot of effort. I always let my family and friends choose cards to give away as well.
Flower shops may sell the cards too. A friends has hers in different shops.
Extremely beautiful cards!!!
Thank you so much for these amazing ideas.
All useful ideas, I have been watching all your videos and really enjoying them. I have seen a list of where to send cards to from your video and will be sending some of my cards out, my pile is getting pretty big too. Thank you for the awesome video.
All the cards I make throughout the year, I give to my mom, and she puts them out at all the holiday parties, and family and friends take what they want. No card ever goes to waste and I don't feel bad creating tons of cards.
Printed address labels definitely helped me mail more cards. And, I really like the idea of donating the cards I haven't mailed to a charity shop.
I love to give them as Christmas gifts!
I also like giving a card pack as a gift!
I give cards to all my medical (health care) staff. They don't get thank you very often. They are always appreciated ❤️.
That's so kind of you!
Is there a discount for bulk mailing? I'm just curious if anyone knows?!
There is, but you REALLLLY have to mail a lot! I'm not sure, but I think you have to have a special account - usually business, nonprofit, etc. - to do this. Plus, there are all sorts of regulations for how to sort & bundle your mail pieces, as well as other aspects I'm sure. I used to help out at my former church with bundling the newsletters they mailed each week to congregants. Very picky work. I don't think sending even 100 cards in dribs & drabs throughout the year would qualify from a required minimum quantity standpoint. Hope this helps. :)
If you use Priority Mail and have them pick it up at the house, it's about $4 cheaper!
Wow! I usually have them pick it up at my house. It's so convenient, but nice to know it might be cheaper too!
Great tips and tricks Jess 🥰 I love your digital designs. You are so organized ❤️ thanks for sharing your creativity Hugs xx
In Australia we have to pay double for the bigger cards. I would love to see your car! That's a great idea, and one I could do so easily. Thanks for this, Jess.
LOL I have about 12 kitchen binz full of cards sitting in my craft room. I just donated about 100 to Cards for Kindness but so many of them do not fit what they need. I hope to use some of your tools to help
Hey Jess, this was a super great video topic. I enjoyed all your helpful ideas and links. I saved a few of your links on my amazon wish list. Thanxs for all you crafty inspiration.
I usually just take my cards to church once or twice a year. Also take when getting together with friends. I also try to keep a couple of boxed sets ready for whenever I need a quick gift.
We have a Senior Center that offers activities and gatherings (not the kind where you live), and many of the activities are crafts. They have a small area where seniors can purchase at a low (fixed-income friendly) price the crafts others have made and donated. They have a card rack and accept donations for it even if the cards were not made at an activity there. Many of the people who are active at the senior center have friends in the live-in facilities, so I'm guessing many of the cards find their way there.
I gift them at Christmas time for my family. It’s always appreciated.
Great suggestions! I donate to my local nursing home too.
Thanks for the great encouragement!
Thank you for the ideas!
Thank you for all the info….
Great ideas, Jess. TFS❤
Hi Jess,
I started making cards less than six months ago. Initially, I used cheap cardstock, inks, and some cheap stamps from Amazon. However, after searching for "how to make cards" on UA-cam, I discovered your channel and several others that showcased the cutest and most gorgeous cards.
Inspired by these videos, I upgraded my supplies and purchased better-quality card stock (Accent Opaque 80 and 100lb), distress oxide inks, and other tools like the Misty, mini score pal, and nesting dies.
I initially intended to donate the cards I made to my church so they could take them to hospitals, hospices, and prisons. However, my cards are not good enough for that yet(that's how I feel). I keep making them and piling them up. I compare my cards with seasoned crafters who have been doing this for years.
I really appreciate your channel and the excellent content you produce. Thank you!
@angelag6156. Hello. I just want to encourage you to keep at it, and your skills will improve over time. I started making cards about a year and a half ago. At first, the cards were just for friends and family birthdays. Now, I'm making and sending out about 15 cards/month, and I'm also donating cards to organizations. I also get lots of inspiration from seasoned crafters.
@@TracyB55 Thanks for the encouragement.
THANK YOU
I love the joke idea!! How about some 🐝 bee jokes?
Hi Susan! Bee jokes are added: jesscrafts.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Bee-Jokes.pdf
I send cards to Cards For kindness.
That's awesome!
