I still can’t believe we actually beat “phi slama jama” , Red Bruin could leap with those vaunted dunkers, however Andre Hawkins our center , could not
So back in the day when Houston wore red their players wore odd numbers and when they wore white they have even numbers. Hakeem, is 35, Drexler 23, Young 43, Micheaux 41. When they wore White it was 34, 22, 42 & 40. Always thought that was interesting.
I know nationally people remember Pearl Washington choosing Syracuse as a big time recruit. But in the late 70’s Tony Bruin was a game changer just as the Big East was getting started. He along with Wayne Mckoy choosing St. John’s really jump started Big East recruiting...
The last year before Syracuse changed to the script jersey and also moved the benches to the other side. For Houston i guess Alvin Franklin was still not yet starting. They always had the road jersey with everyone's # raised by one.
Yeah, me too😊. You may also remember that The Who played a 45,000 seat concert at the Carrier Dome the night before and there was a big scramble to get the stadium cleaned and reconfigured for this game the next afternoon.
I remember this game ...we actually beat “Phi Slama Jamma”......Toney “ Red” Bruin perhaps the greatest leaper SU ever had ...could actually jump with those vaunted dunkers , Andre Hawkins could not
Beautiful passing. So much more exciting than today’s game. I’ve always wondered why Boeheim completely abandoned mixing up his defense and tempo the way they played here. All through the 80’s and early 90’s he always sprinkled in the full court press during games and would switch to man to man defense at times. Now it’s zone always and presses only when down 20 points.
Boeheim went exclusively zone in the 90s, due to the probation. The scholarship cuts from the penalties killed his depth, and made him go zone out of necessity. When he found out that the zone was becoming effective, due to opponents going pro-style, and forgetting how to beat a 2-3, he stuck with the 2-3!
You are correct they lost the next game to Virginia. “SOMEONE” was missing from Virginia’s lineup in that game yet Virginia still won. Really one of the most unbelievable early season stories in college basketball history that no one ever talks about. But because it was so early way before conference play and of course many months before the ncaa tourney it is never mentioned. Another very early season stunning phi slamma loss is NC state beating Houston in the early season of 83-84 when much of the NC state championship lineup was gone yet Houston still had most of their team back except Drexler & Micheax.
😊thank you for leaving the commercials in. Takes me back
Who else is here because UH plays Syracuse this saturday? Go Coogs!!

Michael Young played in France several years. He won many titles and a european competition against Kukoc. His name was the The Silent Assassin

Wow things have really changed in the tournament. This is on Syracuse’s home floor!

The documentary that was done as part of the 30 for 30 series was really good. If you have not seen it, I would highly recommend watching.
Where the hell is the rest of the game!? 😂

I seen this game when I was 17. I was shocked that we beat Phi Slama Jama.
You cheated.
I saw this game when I was 20. It’s scary how fast time flies. Now I’m 61. In another 41 years I’ll be 102 and you’ll be 99.
And 38 years and 3 months later.. these teams meet again

Houston lost this game and the next game to Virginia played in Japan before starting the long win streak.
