  • Michael Young, Benny Anders, and finally Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, with Akeem on the boards. (from the semi-final game of the 1983 NCCA Basketball championship against Louisville.)
    In addition to the shorts, they played with no clock and no 3 point shot.
    Two days later in the championship game against North Carolina State with Jim Valvano coaching, Benny Anders came within fingertips of recreating his dunk to win the championship. We all no what happened instead.

      I was surprised how happy he was to see his old teammates after they finally found him and how he was willing to do an interview. You would think somebody who purposely fell off the face of the Earth wouldn't be happy about being tracked down.

    • @cloverboy75
      @cloverboy75 5 місяців тому

      @@AaronStark1993 It's not surprising to most people middle age or older. There's a perspective on life that only comes with age and Benny's reaction epitomized that. He's reached a time in life where he could appreciate and be grateful for being part of something really special that brought so much joy and excitement to so many people. It was great to see he had the wisdom to appreciate and be thankful that there are people in the world who still care about him enough to go to great lengths to reconnect with him.
      One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is to make them feel that you care about them, that they matter, and that they have a friend. You could see how much it meant to Benny that his old teammates went the extra mile to reconnect with him.

    I remember this game very well. I loved watching this Houston team play. College basketball was great back then because most of the stars stayed until their senior years. Nowadays, it's hard to keep track of the players because if they have any NBA potential, they are usually gone after a year or two. March Madness will always be interesting, but college basketball will never have the same appeal it had back in the 1980's.

    • @sirjer73
      @sirjer73 5 років тому

      ChildOfThe1970s College basketball of the 80s was simply awesome you had sum loaded squads. The 82 final 4 had Gtown with Ewing and Sleepy Floyd. Carolina had Worthy, Jordan, Perkins. HOUSTON had Young, Michaeux, Anders,Akeem and Clyde. And the Ville had The McCray brothers and Lancaster Gordon. I dont think Billy Thompson or Milt Wagner were on that team. I know they were on the 86 Championship team with Pervis Ellison. And the 4 coaches are legends John Thompson,Dean Smith, Guy and Denny Crum!!!!

    U of H and Phi Slamma Jamma. I went out and had a t shirt pressed that said Phi Slamma Jamma. I was 11. My heart was so broken at the end of that game! I will never forget it! There is never been a more weird finish to a National Championship Game than that. It was so ultra weird! Not to even make excuses but... how does the NCAA decide to put the Final Four there? The altitude messed with all the players during the finals regardless of team. I will always find it weird! However we just choked from the line and Guy started trying to "not lose", and in doing so We lost. I always believe Guy V was a great coach and people who hate on him don't realize that when U of H beat UCLA in the Astrodome that was really bigger than a championship. UCLA was invincible and The Big E brought them down! There will never be a team full of showtime EVER that will match Phi Slamma Jamma EVER! The closest would be UNLV

    This team had 2 things in common with the early 1990s Portland Trailblazers teams .
    1-both blew 3 straight chances at titles.
    Houston lost in the Final Four three straight years to the eventual national champs (North Carolina, NC State and Georgetown).
    Portland was defeated three straight years with 3 superstar guards dominating them (Isiah Thomas in 1990, Magic Johnson in 1991 and Michael Jordan in 1992).
    2-Clyde Drexler was on 2 of the Houston teams that choked and all 3 Portland teams that choked.

    Dunking had been band by the NCAA for a few years before this. UH coach Guy Lewis realized the shooting percentage of dunking was fare greater than shooting from a distance. Thus evolved Phi Slamma Jamma. They were one of the first to run the floor with dunking on their mind. Problem is now a lot of players rely to much on it and have lost the art of pure shooting.
